How long before you tunes started to sound professional

Well i was wondering how long did it take you to make your tunes sound professional? You know how long youve been producing, how long you work on a tune?

Well ive been listening to trance since i was 8 or 9 (im only 15) as soon as i heard ATB - Till I Come i was hooked in late 2003 i got FL and started playing around till around late 2004, which recently i have only just started to get some tunes out (crap btw) with obviously alot more software.

Anyway i was wondering?!?

5 years.

i'de say 5-6yrs is about accurate. I'm at 4.5 years and my tracks are quite close.

all sounds about right. Patience is the key

Posted by Derivative on Jan-22-2005 23:53:

thats reassuring. ive got 14 months behind me now. im nowhere near pro sounding. but im working on that mwahaha

EDIT: ALLO MEF! exams going well?

I'm producing music for about 4-5 months now. I'll probably need at least 2 years.

Posted by State of Matter on Jan-23-2005 00:46:

Depends on your natural inclination and your drive. If you work really really hard all the time it could only take 2 years. Ive got about 4 years of experience and I think I'm finally at a level that I'm satisfied with.

I've been producing for about a year now. My tracks don't sound extremely professional, but every track i do sounds better than the last, and my sounds are shaping up a bit.

edit: Answered my own question...anyone know how much space you get with cjb.net?

Posted by RiCo on Jan-23-2005 01:19:

I'm getting there...started in late 2002...but it has been intermittently and only a few hours a week...not full-time like most lucky members of this site.

Not up to me to say if i am a professional or not.

But if i may be modest, i feel am close to where i wanne be, i think in 2 year or 3 i shall be at max.

Just need to find the right gear now and learn some more about music. the knowldge is Infinite.

Am 3 years busy now. (if you count from day one haxor Fl )

I got 2 years of experience for producing, and up till recently my songs have sounded a little bit professional, I have a CD of my first stuff when I using claps like snare drums and 3xOSC was my main synth. I listen to that stuff still to this day an I laugh at myself for all those mistakes, No fxs were used for my songs, no reverb or delay. I progressed alot in the trance world, I know what should be FX should to be applyed to what and I use EQ and compression. Although I suck at compression still.

Posted by DRM on Jan-23-2005 12:14:

taken me 4 years to get where i am now and im still not quite where i want to be but im pretty close. my stuff has been called pro by a fair few people but god its been a long long road

Posted by Haak on Jan-23-2005 14:54:

think i started in 2001, first tune i made that sounded kinda professional was Pulling strings late 2002.

some people are faster though, like that Burnski dude hehehe, he was sounding pro in less than a year i think

the simple gauge of this is whether people pay money to listen to your tunes. so you are a professional when you are earning money from your production. 'professional sounding' tunes would be songs that you create which you believe are competing with the quality and workmanship of your average currently signed tune.

course. theres plenty of great work out there that isnt earning money, made by people that are still technically amateur producers. only their work is fucking amazing. that said, there are also people who have record contracts with songs which really are not that inspired. its pretty clear cut whether you are professional or not. its not quite so clear cut whether what you produce is actually any 'good.' but 'good' is such a subjective thing its difficult to draw a distinction.

DOH! and a couple of really nice songs i was working on whilst a should have been working. hope things have been going a bit better on your side of the fence? eheheh.

Posted by mef on Jan-23-2005 17:28:

Bugger!

I hate essays. Thats why I took a science

Just 3 exams on 31st, 1st and 2nd

Finished a report for tomorrow, so gotta hand that in.

Lacking inspiration musically at the moment though

Posted by Derivative on Jan-23-2005 17:33:

i seriously have to consider putting all my music gear in a cupboard during assessment time and locking the key in one of my flatmate's glove compartments in their car.

that way, every time i wanna write a tune when i should be doing an essay i have to ask my mate for the key, run down 4 flights of stairs, treck to the back on monte's carpark. treck all the way back, up 4 flights of stairs, open my cupboard and reconnect all my synth gear. promptly die of exhaustion and never consider doing it again.

its looking like the only way. after assessments are done you should give us a buzz and me and some mates can all get together and write some phat ass tunes. get your work done first though eh?

i need to take my own advice alot more seriously

Producing since end of 1999, maybe 5 more years to achieve pro-level. And 50+ years to get to levels where BT, Way Out West etc. are (ok never). Software is so good these days that it's possible achieve pro sound quickly with low budget if you work and study hard. Too bad I'm lazy as hell
