Whats wrong with commercial trance?

I noticed that many of you really have a problem with commercial trance. In my opinion, music is all about your own taste. So next time someone says they like a certain track, dont say its shit just because you dont like commercial trance. I think you are forgetting that it is those commercial tracks that are at the climax of the set and make the crowd go wild. P.S. The way it sounds is that any track with an amazin uplifting melody are labeled commercial, I totally disagree with that label

I think it's Commercial when a songs noted on the Charts....
I really don't want to hear Flight 643 40 times a day

I was never a big fan of commercial trance cause you have artists just making whatever and labelling it trance like ATB and Darude who totally ruin the rep of trance. People think that ATB is trance but atb is just total shit. Why can't people like the intelligent music like Paul Van Dyk's work, that is intelligent, same with most of tiesto's work. Commercial Trance is rubbish in my book and personally i won't listen to it. I'm one of the many pissed off by the commercial trance makers that ruin the rep of trance.

comm trance sux

i agree with torontotranceaddict on that one... you have morons like ATB and Darude..etc... the many of the unamed... that make so called music and label it as trance... this type of commercial trance doesn't show what trance is really capable of... take urban train or second sun - empire (pvd remix).... those are works of art, they are deep... like tta said, commercial = atb + darude...

BT is an excellent DJ and producer....does it decrease his talent being that he is now becoming mainstream or what you all consider "commercial"?

Posted by torontotrance on Oct-31-2001 15:57:

BT is talented in my book, no argument here, i own his albums.

That makes "Push - The Legacy" commercial...

First: There have been 39465789 threads on this topic.

Second: There is nothing wrong with commercial. Otherwise everybody wouldn't be going crazy on the dancefloor when they heard a popular song spun by PvD or Tiesto.

Third: Note I said "popular." Is commercial = popular? Yes. But that means more people can appreciate and relate to it. I think this is a good thing because there has to be an accessible end of any music spectrum.

Posted by USMC_Greg on Oct-31-2001 17:36:

IMHO one should listen to any tune that sounds good to them. Boycotting a certain tune just because it's a 'commercial' tune is BS. If you like the tune listen to it. If not, don't listen to it.

We're all out of the 3rd grade now; we can listen to whatever we want without the village idiot saying "ha ha, you don't like rap" (or some bs like that)

bollocks. your jsut one of those peopel who cant tell cheese because you also get attracted by commercial/pop value in music. i have plenty of tunes with much betetr melody, which arnt tinny, or popular jsut because of some gimmicky sequence like ppk or barthezz.
commercial trance is always cheese, because in this tunes the only thing apart from the tune is the melody, so it catches on easily. belive me in time you will know what proper trance is, i have a friend like you, and back in 99 when i first discovered trance i too liked the cheesy ones. but eventually my friend you wont have to resort to such heresy. .

ps. when i say a tune is crap, doesnt mean i say nobody should lsiten to it, it just means its shite, and people generally lsiten to shit, as the top 40 shows me every week but i no like cheese/shite.

I disagree. The producers of ATB and Darude etc bring more people to like 'techno' or 'trance' whatever that want to call it. The point is, just because its commercial does not make it "rubbish". These producers dont ruin the reputation of trance. They allow people who dont normally listen to trance to listen to it and change their minds about the music. Think about it, bringing commerical trance to the public, brings more people into the trance community, and many are not going to like progressive right away.

as for "intelligent music"?? Paul van dyk's CDs are PROGRESSIVE, but whatever.

Anyways, why bicker about commerical trance, its music, and music is for people to listen to and enjoy even though some people think it sucks.

if you listen to the radio with top 40 commerical trance, then forgive me what i am saying. I dont even listen to the radio in my city, its too "commerical pop" and i just dont listen to it.

Talking horrible

Well commercial stuff like darude, too commercial, too cheesy and yes in my opinion this kind of DANCE DANCE music is a piece of shit. I remember when it was more unknown, underground , it wasn't a great tune but it was a bit good. Today things have changed and poeple have o understand that our music skills grow each days.

I Can understand why such bad producer like COSMIC GATE can take a piece of trance track like their new remix of

1)DJ TIESTO - FLIGHT 643
2)MISS SHIVA - DREAMS

and make a remix. I really think that poeple who like this kind of music have a bit of CLUBBER in their way to talk about trance 'cause this is not trance, it's dance and if this shit is trance, be sure i'm not a trance addict anymore.

Trance is: tiesto - corsten - buuren - bedrock - digweed and much more

C'mon guys maybe you disagree my opinion but no more club stuff there.

Have you ever listen all stuff like bedrock in a club, tiesto or jimmy van m.....well not sure

Posted by Ste on Oct-31-2001 18:29:

bedrock/digweed is shitty cheese-prog. NEVER say its trance

Posted by tiesto2222 on Oct-31-2001 18:42:

Shame / Disagreement hein????

DuMonde TrAnCeR

Well i can agree your opinion about your digweed or bedrock facts because it was the same the first time i've listened their stuff. But when your progressive mood will grow. maybe you'll like their stuff. Also i'm a bit agree with you to say that bedrock is not trance but check some stuff on their cd's and you have some piece of trance. But today the difference between some tracks of progressive house and trance are hard to see.

like bedrock - heaven scent

thanks man

Posted by Ste on Oct-31-2001 18:59:

my opinion is that i dont like bedrock. the fact is they arnt trance. and my progressive mood touches more specified artists rather than the obvious sasha-digweed connection... thank you.

Posted by tiesto2222 on Oct-31-2001 19:03:

Exclamation well

what you listen who is better than bedrock...excuse me for my poor english...

Dog Running

Commercial trance is cheese trance which is ATB in the likes of 9pm til i come and darude-sandstorm. Basically music dat is played to death at local clubs. REal trance is music from the likes of Gatecrasher, Ministry of sound, CReams etc. Stuff that originates there. Paul Van dyk -- Angel is overplayed but its not commercial..WHy? because its original and its sound does not give the listener a catchy melody like the Guitar in Sandstorm or the Piano in PPk Ressurection. CHEEEEESE- UNORIGINAL BUT CATCHY!

Absolutely love that tune for that very fact, it walks the border in my opinion.

If you heard For An Angel on the radio and every joint in town all over the world over and over again. I'm sorry, it would be put into the same catagory that Darude - Sandstrom is in now. Not because one is any better than the other either. Mr. Van Dyk played Sandstorm quite a bit along with many other big DJ's that are being named off in this thread when it first came out. If it hadn't gotten so popular and overplayed EVERYWHERE, then I believe it wouldn't be looked down upon so much. I'm not saying it's my favourite tune either simply stating why *I THINK* it has been labelled as "commercial cheese" and others have not.

Posted by speedracer_mec on Oct-31-2001 21:36:

welll

OK what is considered cheese.....
DJ QUiksilver or the song FINAL Fantasy or the song Vengaboys, or ATB- 9pm til i come, Anything by Space FROG, Pulsedriver, Talla2xlc<<<<<<<

Posted by Zombie0915 on Nov-01-2001 02:42:

personally, I can't wait for the day where my trance knowledge and music collection is so great that I think sandstorm is shite. I loved the toon since I downloaded PvD @mayday 2000. I also liked Barthez and even ... Alice Deejay(gag!) One day I hope to be into this trance scene the way some of you guys are, I'm just clueless right now.

UnWorldly, I hope to god that you are being sarcastic with that statement. If you love a tune, then you love it. Don't stop listening to a tune because other people tell you the tune is shit! That's pathetic! Everyone has different tastes. People can critique things to death but it's you who ultimately decides if you want to listen to it or not.

I'm tired of people calling tunes like sandstorm crap simply because it's commercial and without any other reason. WTF? A tune is crap because it's commercial? I can see how some people can get their panties tied up in a knot when you classify sandstorm as trance.

I remember listening to Darude the first time at underground clubs way before it ever got public and I remembered how blown away we were. After about a year or so later it slowly crept it's way to clubs and then the radio till it got played to death. Some of the people I know who went nuts for the tune in it's infancy suddenly didn't like it anymore simply because now it's mainstream and some of the underground flavour was lost. It was 'uncool' to like a tune because now that so many people who knew nothing about trance music started liking it. WTF??

Bottom line, if you like the tune then listen to it! People can review tunes to death but in the end it's you to decide if you want to listen to it again. Also keep in mind commercial tunes varies greatly depending on where you live. In Europe trance is a lot more mainstream than it is in North America. Some of the tunes that are considered commercial there never get any airtime here and vice versa.

Posted by DJ Fien on Nov-03-2001 02:41:

Heh.... Bedrock = John Digweed & Nick Muir. And if Digweed is progressive cheese, I think not. There really isn't any progressive 'cheese' per say, its far too broad of a genre (Just compare Steve Lawler to Dave Seaman to Digweed, very different). Its just a classic, like Binary Finary was.
