question about racism in countries other than the united states...

ok so this whole annoying black women...annoying white women crap is obviously bringing out peoples feelings on the issue. so i'm really curious...do other countries experience racism in the same way that americans do? i mean, of course you'll always have people that are racist in every country, but i would think that europe and other countries in the world wouldn't have as much crap about race as the US does...i mean, it seems like so much of it is based off of the history of the united states...so...discuss...

Seems like Canada is pretty high up on the list of racist/prejudice countries. Though it seems that the champ of racism is actually the Netherlands... Go figure - the Clogs are not as friendly as they'd have you believe.

over here we have a fair bit

Pakistanis dislike most others
Indians dislike pakistanis but are usually nice to english
Iraqis are pure violent
former yugoslav countries/turks are very dangerous & racist, many deal drugs & carry weapons often
Jamaicans/afro-carribean are not such a problem as in the USA with 'whites' but a lot dont get on.

I personally try to be fair & equal to anyone of any religion or race but sadly a lot of the country here isn't the same and it's getting to anarchy

i guess it would make sense for european countries to have higher populations of a lot of different ethnic groups as compared to the us. i mean we have our fair share, but mostly it's white, black, asian, and hispanic...you guys get a lot of other large groups as well...

Posted by Tufan on Jan-24-2005 18:00:

well in Norway i wouldnt say there are many rasists, but there are just to many godtdam Haters, people be hating on forheners for no reason, he got a nice car, he got a nice job,oh he stole my girlfriend. Idiotic reasons. and the Media doesnt help this shit to mutch, But looking at other Europen Countrys I would say Italy is worst

we went through the worst of the 'white-black' things 20-30 years ago and now they're accepted in sports etc, infact the european fans boo our black players to the point where the whole country is on their side anyway

i will tell you this .. i thought the 'indian invasion' was only here in the united states, until i read and heard some news that the indians (not the native ones .. the other indians) are invading europe also, such as england ..

but the reason why the us has all this racism and it 'sticks' out the way it is right now, because of it's history, especially during the late 19th century and mid-20th century .. also, because the united states is a big melting pot .. everyone of all nationalities live here ..

just as long as the u.s. doesn't pull out the 'china effect' on the population, that would be cool .. if no one is aware of the 'china effect', the chinese government had enforced a law stating that families can only have 3 children (??? is that right .. or two .. one male and one female) .. the us rendition would be like there has to be a maximum number of people representing a nationality living in the united states .. if the number is over, then the leader of the nationality has either two choices : kick him out of the united states, or kill him ... that would sound sad and demeaning .. sounds like some rendition of 'lord of the flies' ..

Bull shit. There is a lot of anti-pakistani sentiment in Norway, especially Oslo. You are right though, it seems they're more against foreigners, in general, than a particular group.

what kind of bullshit is that? you ever been to canada for more then a weekend trip? theres hardly any racism here. and any kind of "race" joke isnt taken offensively. theres more racism going on in the states. how often do you see "redneck" trash beat up a poor black guy because hes black. i see it a lot more from the states than canada. canadas far more accepting of of people from different nations, in fact, we give them extreme leniancy, where as in the states, you come down there or live a certain length, your no longer (for example) Korean, your an AMERICAN NOW! Even with a name like "Seng Hee Lee"

And finally, if were not as friendly as people would beleive, stop wearing the Canadian flag when you go travelling. Noone likes americans.

well it makes sense that england would have a larger indian population given their history with india. i'm not surprised by that at all.

and i believe china was a one child thing...and that was partly the reason why baby girls were killed because parents wanted a son...

see now somewhere like the scandinavian countries...i wouldn't think there would be a lot of racism...but i think a large part of that has to do with the fact that those countries seem to not be as diverse as say england or the united states.

that's the moroccan flag

the whole indian/pakistani conflict isn't really based on racism, but more on the territorial conflict over kashmir (disputed land situated between india and pakistan). i guess you can say that religious differences (hinduism vs islam) are at the heart of that one.

Posted by fastmp3 on Jan-24-2005 18:19:

for having lived in two countries , here's my input :

-canada : there's no apparent racism in canada , no one will refuse to serve you in a restaurant because you're black/asian/arab/whatever. the only form of racism you might find is in the employment market (except the low wage jobs).

-morocco : as much as we keep on crying because we're victims of racism in other countries (specially europe) , moroccans are unfortunately racist too , specially towards black people from sub-saharian countries

There's alot of talk about that people with foreign names have much harder to get (good) jobs in Sweden than those with "Swedish" names. Even if they have a medical degree or whatever.

Pakkis. That term just cracks me up. I think there is going to be some form of racism everywhere. People are afraid of things they don't understand and there are a lot of idiots out there.

Being originally from South Africa, I have a pretty good idea on how racist a majority can be, but I'll tell you this after only 3 years in the UK, they arent far off

far off like what? they going to have their own water fountains and schools?

I never got why people are racist. I understand stereotyping, but hating someone just because they are a different race is pathetic. In the USA it seems that people tend to be more racist if they live down south.

PS: I don't condone stereotyping, I just understand it.

England is a strange place in terms of race and religion. Where I'm originally from, there are practically no ethnic minorities or people of any religion (other than Christian, and even those are few and far between). But then after going to uni, I've lived in a place where there is a large variety in race and religion. It's been one huge learning curve for me.

I was completely nave about racism until I started uni. Only then, after meeting people of different races and religions, did I see the effects of racism for myself. It's quite weird actually, being in what's called a "white country" and walking along the street having racist remarks being shouted at me by a group of black kids. Still, life goes on.

The strangest thing of all though to me, is how somebody's race seems to be such a big deal to everybody except white people. I mean, just listen to black people or people from Pakistan talking to each other, having a general conversation. The number of times that they refer to themselves (in a non-insulting way, of course) as "******" or "paki" is gobsmacking, but I've never said to my white friends, or heard any white person, call someone else a "white boy". Lol, I've been called that before by some of my mates at uni, and that's just how it is, it's just their way.

Still makes me laugh though.

iin NYC, there arent too many racism cuz theres probably the most diverse ethnic backgrounds compared to other cities in the states.. we joke about other races not cuz we see them on tv and the media, we do it cuz its part of our lives.. we see 'different' ppl everywhere here.. thats very normal in nyc.. so we sorta have the right to make fun.. its all in fun anyway its not like we seriously have beef with other races.. just joke on their sterotypes and stuff just to bug out.
