Upcoming Melbourne trip

Okay,

I'm going to Melbourne for TT but I'm going to have a couple of nights to also check out the best venues on offer around the city.

So far on my list I have:

Friday
Bass Station@The Palace, Hard Kandy@Royal Melbourne

Saturday
Volume@The Metro, Bubble, Room 680

Does this sound any good? Also how is Altitude on a Friday night, as apparently it's very close to the RM? Are there any here that I shouldn't bother with?

Thanks

Friday:

Q Bar, Alumbra, Boutique (if you can get in)

Saturday

Golden Gate, Candy Bar, 161

btw volume is @ room680, and isnt too bad but dies down very quickly imo. Metro has cheap drinks from 10 -12 i think, but is normally quiet on a sat nite. ALso depends what sort of music you are after. ALtitude aint too bad, and is a nice little place. If your after House/commercial/80's go to clubs above i listed. If your into you harder trance go to HK or Bassstation. Volume is predominantly a house nite, and imo there are a lot better house nites out there than volume.

Cool, adding to my notes. Whereabouts are these?

Definitely after trance & hard dance, going to The Metro was mainly due to it's "southern hemisphere's biggest" tagline and also to subdue the girlfriend with some house (which I'm also partial to)... but if Volume is at Room 680 then we will check that out instead.

I also heard Honkytonks was interesting, but the dress code is unworkable? As in, "we change daily what people we let in" unworkable?

Speaking of which, is there a general rule of thumb with regards to dress? Must have white shoes, collars, etc?

Melbourne is generally pretty lax about what you wear, and if a club tells you what your wearing is not suitable, its just doormans polite way of saying fuck off. Honkytonks if you can find someone to put you on guestlist and have a girl tagged along should be no dramas. Most of the above places apart from prolly golden gate would all require you to have an absolute hot minx in toe.

Qbar, Boutique all off chapel st. ALumbra is down at the dox, absolute georgeous venue.

Golden Gate is on clarendon st, and is more your pop/rnb/retro place. 161 is just off chapel st, and always has awesome music, and sometimes suprise international guests.

If your after hard trance or trance Altitude, HK and Bassstation is all you need to know.

Remember im giving you a general view on melbourne venues/nites. Not just trance related.

161 is great fun... get in early to get in tho, or have good woman on hand..

altitude is great too, a nice smallish kinda place.

volume rocks

if u like hard trance i guess hardkandy/basstation or whatever it is would be good

but urk

Seven is cool for a funky crowd and funky house on a saturday night, quite hard to get into, so PM for g/l if you're interested

Posted by Fpcookie on Jan-25-2005 02:52:

for hard trance id say altitude on thurs or kandy on fri. bubble on sat only if you are really desperate for some hard trance. Although id steer clear.

For a housey kinda thing, seven or prince of wales on a saturday night are good. ive heard billboards on a friday isnt bad either.

Guess it all depends on what music u want to be listening to, what sorta crowd u want to be hanging out with and how much u want to spend in a night.

Well first let me clarify... I'll take smooth dutch productions over banging hard UK trance any day of the week... I mentioned Bass Station and Hard Kandy because they're known names (brands?) up here with the hard dance-oriented Brisbane clubbers. Having said that, I'll still be dropping in on both to see if they're up to their reputation.

Thanks for all the suggestions having a girl attached will be no problem as we will be the only ones coming down on this trip. Money is no real issue, as long as the prices aren't crazy

Based on Paulie's recommendation and their website, Alumbra sounds really nice. I go to W-Bar everytime I'm in Sydney, and this sounds just as sexy.

Prince of Wales, is that the venue with the upcoming gigs written on a big board outside the venue? At St Kilda? Or am I thinking of another place? I don't know, I was on The Esplanade on my last clubless trip and walked past it during the day.

I was going to ask about Chapel St, I don't know if it's too sleazy, too upmarket, too gay or what. We may do that area one night and hit everywhere else the other night. So before we hit 161 or Boutique (go the 80s night ) we might have dinner if there's a place around there... or is that a stupid question?

Btw are there trams to all these places? That's how we'll be getting around, save for a single day car hire to see relatives in Croydon (which, on the map, looks halfway across Victoria).

Ive been both Onelove(pow) and Seven in the last month. Seven on saturday was hella boring. Hardly anyone rocking the dancefloor, the only things that saved it were the tunes. Id recommend Onelove before Seven, but you prolly have more chance getting in Seven. 161 doesnt really start to go off till about 4am lol. Boutique is a kick ass place, never had a bad time.

Taxis between chapel st, fitzroy st and the city wouldnt be more than 10-15 dollars.

Bump, I'm starting to organise guestlists for Friday & Saturday night and WILL review some of these places to give outsiders at least some idea of what a place is like (locals tend to have more critical views). Already told the girl I'm managing the nights down there... now I just have to put up with shopping during the day but at least I'll be able to skip from one place to another.

Thanks for your help, I'll be letting everyone know how we went

Had a great weekend. Spent soo much money and did a lot of running about, but really enjoyed Melbourne. Still a great city second time around.

Managed to see some venues on this visit too!

Friday: Alumbra - hmm. The website really made this place look good, so I was a bit disappointed on arrival - a bit small and a bit noisy (there's no need to crank the house everywhere guys!) - but not too bad. Good crowd considering we rocked up about 10pm. Nightmare to find walking from the city. Brisbane people, go to Jorge - it's bigger, better and doesn't cost ten bucks to enter.

Bass Station - nice. Brisbane's closest equivalent would be downstairs at Rockafellas, but this is much, much better! It's a rave club, no doubt... lots of UV, bright colours and two rooms (a bar and video screen showing the decks in the main room). Beautifully set up imo. I think we paid $14 with a website guestlist. Reasonably priced drinks. We had to wait until late in Midro's set (almost 3am) to hear the more uplifting stuff.

PS. The Melbourne shuffle looks like a goosestep crossed with Riverdance.

Saturday: Frostbite (Chapel St) - recommended by someone down there, we thought it was okay. Food was nice considering it's a bar mainly serving alcoholic slush puppies. Get used to paying $7.50 for those slush puppies too - or go to Crown where they probably serve Daquaris for three dollars.

Blue Bar (Chapel St) - more chilled than Alumbra at least, smart setup, good if you want to chat.

Seven - Haha, the taxi driver warned us as he was thrashing the Falcon through traffic to watch out for "dickheads at Seven... don't drink anything you didn't buy". As it turned out, there would be no problem with people buying any drinks for us...

The place was very clean and upper... half reminded me of a junior Family (ironically, Sat night there is called Family). $10 guestlist entry (thanks EM) seemed reasonable, but Jesus, the drink prices! I didn't know what to say I was asked to hand over $17 for two cowboys. They were damn half shots and require no skill to make. Next up was a Red Bull/Vodka... that'll be $13.50? Why do people think expensive drinks equal a classy club? Family is more than triple the size of Seven and has cheaper drinks. It's not in Melbourne though, so I guess you guys will have to suffer

Room 680/Volume - I had huge hopes for this place, as they seem to draw all the internationals. They have no problem showing it either, as witnessed by the Jan Johnson propaganda plastered on the video screen. I think our entry was $10 with a guestlist. Drinks were reasonable. The place was dead when we arrived (midnight) although it picked up a bit. They were still playing house at 2am. Great sound system.

Sunday: Two Tribes - Only met up with one TA - found Tachyon on the floor when Signum were playing. Vodaphone is big, but Rod Laver is massive. And it was packed for Prodigy - an awesome sight. I'm not a fan of them, but you can't help getting into it when everyone is cranking that hard. Overall a great event, even the smaller rooms were good - they didn't feel tacked-on or put in a janitor's closet like they would be up here.

MIKE owns... but I missed half his set! Oh, I spotted Molly Meldrum too. Also while we went past the ambos, there was someone who was lying face down on a stetcher with a sheet over their entire body... we thought they were dead but apparently not.

So yeah, that's about it.
I regret not going to 161 (couldn't find it), Metro, Hard Kandy and Bubble (not enough time). Also I was unable to attend a couple of other things due to only getting the details after I left Brisbane. Next visit!
