van Dyk

Sorry for invading, but is it true that van Dyk (van Dijk or something) is Dutch name, not German?

Posted by Leon on Jan-25-2005 12:25:

To get to the bottom of this... Paul was born in Germany, but is he Dutch? His lineage seems to be...

Posted by MaGiK54 on Jan-25-2005 12:29:

Andreas Paul is his real name..... "Van Dyk" is his artistname....

Posted by Leon on Jan-25-2005 12:34:

Wicked... where did you hear/read that?

Posted by jp on Jan-25-2005 12:35:

In the 18th century lots of Dutch people were invided to work in Brandenburg, the region around Berlin. Many of them stayed there.

In Potsdam, Berlin's neighbour city lots of buildings remind of the Dutch heritage. Some streets look just like Amsterdam.

So it's pretty common for someone in Berlin to have a Dutch name. In Holland Van Dijk is just as normal as Johnson in the US.

One thing: Van Dyk is his artist name, not his real name (Matthias Paul)

PvD is German, not Dutch in any way

Voor de laatste keer dan:

Paul van Dyk:

His real name is Matthias Paul, he was born 16th of December 1971 in Eisenhttenstadt (East-Germany)

Married with Natascha Seidel since 2000

His isn't Dutch although his artist name is Van Dyk. The official reason he has a artist name has to do with privacy and because Paul van Dyk just sounds better than Matthias Paul.

Why exactly he uses a Dutch name is unknown to the public, but it might have to do with the fact that his father left him and his mother at young age. Maybe it's his mothers maiden name?

Like I said, Dutch influence in Brandenburg is pretty big. Btw, another well known Berlin DJ is called Mijk van Dijk. They are not related.

roflrofl bro I was just kidding!
I try to chill at the Israel forum but they all have hebrew threads too.. I know just enough hebrew to sound like a caveman ;/

Posted by jp on Jan-25-2005 16:50:

People from Amsterdam use tons of hebrew/jiddish words every day. Many of them are now common Dutch:

gabber (chawwer/chover), geintje (cheen), geteisem (chatteisem/chatat), jatten (jad), kapsones (gawsones/ga-awtanoet), mazzel (mazal), stiekem (sjtieke/sjetieka)

So... buy a dictionary

Hey jp how did you know of those? I haven't even heard of most of those... it's probably yiddish. Only one I could pick out was mazal (luck)!

Posted by Muppy on Jan-25-2005 23:30:

ik wist dat Darren Tate als experiment destijds een nummer uitgebracht heeft onder jurgen vries, en dat dat een enorme hit werd...

misschien dat matthias/andreas dacht: damn die nederlandse namen gaan goed, doe ik ook!
