Active or Passive studio monitors??

Im going to buy new studio monitors, but im not familiar with hardware. So my problem is that i dont know the difference between Active and Passive studio monitors. What is good and what is bad?
Can i even use studio monitors to make music or are they only for the singers??

So can someone please tell me what i need to buy?

Thanks in advance.

Well, active studio monitors have built in amplifiers, so the amplifiers and the speakers are perfectly matched and won't colour the sounds as an external amplifier may do. Passive monitors require an additional external amplifier.
Active monitors will cost more than passive monitors, but you'll know you have good monitoring system, that you can directly wire-up to you're mixer.
About using studio monitors for producing. Well, that's exactly what they were ment for.

^^^ Agree with RedRooM - you'll probably end up spending more moolah for passive + amp than powered monitors. You can get a nice set of powered KRK's now for dirt cheap or even Mackie-made Tapco S-5. Linky
