Two Ocala children charged with felonies over violent drawings

Associated Press

OCALA, Fla. - Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony.

The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.

The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.

They were also suspended from school.

One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.

Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.

Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.

OMG U H@X0rz!!!!

Anyways, I think having them suspended from school for a while is nothing. I don't think there was a need for them to be arrested though, but I guess thats how they do things in the states. I would have thought it would just go principals office, parents, report, suspension.

You must have been one fucking stupid 9/10 year old, if you think they do not "understand what a felony is."

Posted by bas on Jan-28-2005 01:47:

when i was 10 i didn't know the diff between a felony & misdemeanor...but i had to know that shit. my dad is a lawyer, and i watched alot of cop movies.

"the most we'll get is a misdeanor!"
"mother ****** is gonna go free....not on my watch"
"dammit McCallum!!"

also is anyone forgetting that they were retarded? im sure they didn't know what they were doing was wrong

Posted by beats and beeps on Jan-28-2005 01:52:

Does special education always refer to "retarded people" in the states?

Also, I would say most "retarded people" know the difference between right and wrong, and they know what murder is. These children obviously seemed to know how to use a drawing as means of intimidation.

Posted by bas on Jan-28-2005 01:59:

yes usually special ed is for mentally handicapped kids, if they just have a learning disorder like add or whatever the hell they are. heavy medication and publick school is all they get. but still age 9 & 10, im sure they didn't know they were going to get arrested

Posted by smokeape on Jan-28-2005 02:08:

Well, let's talk about Doom 3, Grand Theft Auto, and the like. Here we can graphically blast and maim at the push of a button. And we think a couple of retards drawing pics are bad? Where is this f*cking society heading? The arrests are absolutely ludicrous and totally uncalled for when people can rent a game or a video depicting far more graphic violence than that which could ever be drawn by the grade schoolers.

I actually laughed a little when I first heard about this. It sounds like something your mom would threaten you with at the age of 10, but really doesn't mean it. "Young man, if you do that again, I'm going to have the cops haul you off to jail!" Just, this time, she was telling the truth.

Seriously though, there's some fucked up priorites here. Children are not subject to the law in the same way as citizens are because children are, for all intents and purposes, appendices of their parents and think far differently than people do. Especially when they are mentally disabled - what the fuck is wrong with that? What they did wasn't right - you don't draw depictions of you killing another person (unless it's really, really talented - then it's edgy art ) - but hauling 9 and 10 year-olds off to jail, in HANDCUFFS? I think if I were a parent of either of the two children, I would have taken down as many cops as I could - it's absolutely ridiculous.

Ok, enough ramblings at 4:02 am.

Posted by Jackson on Jan-28-2005 11:34:

Handcuffs? like they're gonna cause a threat to the cops if they dont cuff them....the problem with this is that these kids are only gonna do it again... they wanted attention and they got national news! this is just something they're gonna brag about and do worse things...i mean when you were 10 and you heard a kid in your school had been arrested you'd prob think "Wow...hes cool"...its just gonna fuel them to do worse things.
Im with smokeape on this one. They are not attacking the cause of this problem such as violent video games that are readilly availible for kids, they are attacking the outcome of the problem...
