Baghdad Mayor: "We will build a statue for Bush. He is the symbol of freedom."
I've been away for a while. So nice to see that most of you are still around! Back to the show...

By JOSH WILLIAMS http://www.nypost.com/news/worldnews/39526.htm January 30, 2005 -- BAGHDAD The man replacing the mayor of Baghdad who was assassinated for his pro-American loyalties says he is not worried about his ties to Washington. In fact, he'd like to erect a monument to honor President Bush in the middle of the city. "We will build a statue for Bush," said Ali Fadel, the former provincial council chairman. "He is the symbol of freedom." Fadel's predecessor, Ali al-Haidari, was gunned down Jan. 4 when militants opened fire on his armor-covered BMW as it traveled with a three-car convoy. Fadel said he received numerous threats on his life as the council chairman, and expects to get many more in his new post. "My life is cheap," Fadel said. "Everything is cheap for my country." As Iraq prepared for a volatile election that is being watched across the world, Fadel heaped praise on the United States. Fadel acknowledged that many in his country appear ungrateful for America's foreign assistance. He said most Iraqis are still in "shock" over the changes, and need time to adjust. Any public monument to Bush is likely to further incense terrorist forces, who have attacked American troops and their supporters for months. Fadel said he is undaunted. "We have a lot of work and we are especially grateful to the soldiers of the U.S.A. for freeing our country of tyranny," Fadel said. As for his own protection, the new mayor will be traveling in a new $150,000 SUV complete with bulletproof windows and flat-resistant tires. |
oy. did anyone else hear the thing on NPR today about the growing number of people coming forward with doubts of america's intentions with iraq? a retired us government official estimated we'll be there another 18 months at the least. goodbye social security...
I've always wanted to use that in PDD.
what a waste of fuckin money that would be.They can easily spend that money for alot more useful things rather then building a statue of douchebag.
Just shows how easy it is to buy ppl out.
Hmm, I kinda have a feeling that statue wouldn't last for a long time...

Wow. It's encouraging to see so many people rooting for failure.
It'd be nice if they put it where the infamous statue of Saddam was - you know the one that was torn down on TV...
If there's one thing the Iraqi people defintely need scarce public funds spent on, it'd have to be a statue of George Bush imho. It should be made out of gold, stand 50 feet tall and belch out fire on the hour - you know, just to let them know who's boss.

It's kind of like when Bill Kristol was applauding Bush's inauguration speech, though he helped make it.
I have the perfect picture from which that staute can be modelled. It epitomizes the Bush presidency's vision single-handedly.
It has bush peering out into the distance, looking for people to free from the heavy hand of tyranny. It almost brings tears to me eyes.

| Whether real or manipulated, these photographs demonstrate nothing beyond the trivial. As much as we may enjoy poking fun at our politicians, they aren't so clueless that they don't know binoculars don't work with the lens caps in place, or would stand confusedly staring through capped binoculars at total blackness for several minutes at a time. Hardly anyone among us hasn't accidentally raised a capped pair of binoculars to his eyes for a few moments before realizing the problem; the difference is that most of us don't have a crowd of photographers hanging around us all day long just waiting to snap such a picture of the moment. Also, there are reasons why binoculars (especially types used by the military) shown in a photograph might appear to be capped when they really aren't: the lenses could be coated with a non-reflective material to cut down on glare and prevent gleams of light from reflecting off the lens and revealing one's position to the enemy, or the binoculars could be NVD (night vision devices) which also work in daylight (provided they have caps with small holes in place to block out most of the light). |

Allawi, Iraq's interm Prime Minister, today said that he expects all foreign troops to pull out in 18 months. Others had estimated 5 more years of coalition presence in Iraq. |
it's hilarious to see you whiney, punk-a** binaches hate on the mayor Baghdad. i mean the guy only stepped up because the previous mayor was brutally assasinated, and then proceeds to go to work every day always wondering whether him or his family will share the same fate all the while being a damn proud productive citizen of his own society he continues to help up.
some of you people are the scum of the earth. i weep for your worthless futures.
hate on young brotha's and sista's...hate on!
I will gladly hate on anyone who makes a public statement that a statue of Bush needs to be erected. I'd doubt even his serious supporters back home would be willing to go so far.
IMO the Mayor's remarks are rank with impressions of Old Iraq dictatorship. Replace "Bush" with "Saddam" and rewind a couple years and it wouldn't seem that out of place. Parhaps he doesn't realise you don't need to kiss ass like that in a democracy.
