Tips to speed up your computer for gaming

Well what are some good tips for speeding up your computer for games other than the obvious ones like to not have other programs running, disabling antivirus and having updated drivers.

Think that resolution would be good for Half-Life?

Obviously better hardware would do it, I'm not that stupid, I'm talking about software and such that might help me out.

Just delete your registry.

Try this at your own risk.

overclock everything and do a fresh install every time when its necessary.

Posted by Trypt0mine on Feb-01-2005 19:06:

just make sure youre computer is running as clean as possible and if thats not enough, its time to overclock btw whats ur system specs?

overclocking isn't as easy as it sounds, and it won't do that much of a difference if you're not running the right hardware.

defrag your harddrive, get latest drivers for all your hardware, adjust game video settings for more performace/less detail or less performance/more detail unless you have loadsa then get top of range hardware and adjust settings for more performance/more detail.

Scan Your PC for Spyware Programs/Files using PestPatrol www.pestpatrol.com or Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.com/

I like pestpatrol

Make sure that autoupdating is turned off, If your playing a game and lets just say 1 hour into playing, software such as windows or anti-virus will start autoupdating itself causing lag.

I don't recommend overclocking, I found quirks after 6 months, like locking up on a loading screen, or windows wouldn't boot.

Also motherboard Chipset Drivers do a good boost, depending what chipset you have, get the appropiate update for it

To name a few chipsets there is

Intel
SiS
Via
NForce
AMD

I just formatted so defragging and checking for spyware won't do to much. Are there any tweaking programs specificaly for this, that will devote more resources to the game or something like that, or make the game directory faster for the computer to read?

Posted by yujie__ on Feb-03-2005 01:33:

if that didnt work then your equipment is slow and/or u have a bottleneck somewhere. get a almost top of the line system and overclock till you are good to go for couple of generations. my overclock athlonxp-m still does me good for what i do till something major happens or something like that

Posted by MikHail on Feb-04-2005 07:12:

If your using a Pentium Celeron or AMD Duron, don't bother tweaking, those are cut down perfomance CPUs wouldn't have much of an effect.

There are Video Tweak Programs and Software CPU overclocking, you just have to know what hardware you've got, theres a few Game Tweak Guides so Google them down.

But really when it comes to Games, Its about the perfomance which makes it Great!

Get 2nd hand parts If you have to.

Oh and Defragging will only speed up Loading Times.

I'm running an Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester core. It's supposed to be an overclocking beast; a CPU that can be easily pushed to 2.4GHZ from it's standard 1.8GHZ using stock Heatsink & Fan.

And guess what? I can't push mine past 2.1GHZ.

SO yea, I also don't recommend OC'ing, unless you really know what you're doing. And, like I said before, you have the right hardware and some LUCK too.

It doesn't matter much anymore since I got my NX Geforce 6600GT

Along with the new computer that had a gig of ram and a 3ghz processor, but it was taken back so we could get something faster
