...in return, you have to sign your soul away to Telus.

No thanks Plus, Telus isn't GSM

When's virgin finally opening here? I know they've already had a website and hiring people ands tuff....goooooooooooo Virgin (although I don't know much about their services)

Posted by ShadoWolf on Feb-02-2005 18:04:

Bell's even worse, no?

Posted by starsearcher on Feb-02-2005 18:06:

It's coming:

http://www.virginmobile.ca

The nuts and bolts of it is Virgin Mobile Canada is a joint partnership between Richard Bransons Virgin Group and Bell Mobility which means were on one of the best networks going.

ahhh soo its partnered with bell

thats great...thats just gonna be like rogers and fido

Posted by baystreetboi on Feb-02-2005 18:22:

It's highly unlikely you're going to get any new cell phone provider in Canada that doesn't piggyback off either Bell, Telus or Rogers' networks.

Think of the billions alone in start up costs that would be required to deploy a new, separate network.

Oh they are? I didn't know...my bad...on their site they say they are completely new and revolutionary

In any case virgin is a global empire - it's not like it needs anyone's help you know, but you might be right Is there anything that Richard Branson doesn't do/own yet?

They are a completely new and separate company from Bell that will offer their own plans, phones etc.

However they will not actually own and operate their own cell network. They'll simply be buying network time off of Bell. Primus Canada already has a similar arrangment in place with Microcell / Fido (now Rogers of course.

Virgin in the U.S. is no big deal really.

You might like T-Mobile though.

GSM = "Global Standard for Mobile Communications"
CDMA = "Code Division Multiple Access"

...basically two different technologies to deliver wireless phone service. CDMA is essentially only found in North America, while GSM tends to be both here and international.

From a technical point of view, CDMA is considered a more advanced technology, but in practice, performance tends to be similar.

Posted by StereoPrincess on Feb-02-2005 19:08:

telus is just as bad as all these crazy companies.

i wish there was a brand new network to get all excited about.

i hate bell and i hate rogers but my friend current has a telus phone and it's the crappiest service in the entire world. she can't make a call for longer than 5 seconds and they have already "fixed" the phone twice.

Rogers/Fido = GSM/GPRS
Bell/Telus = CDMA
Telus = iDen

I agree CDMA is more advanced and better quality.

Another thing, it doesnt make sense when people say bell's coverage is better than telus'. For the most part, Out west bell uses telus' towers and here in Ontario Telus uses bell towers. They buy bulk time off each other. Your getting the same coverage. Might want to look into better hardware with better antenna.

That might be true but it's rather limited. Besides, good luck getting a cool phone with CDMA...you pretty much tied to the technology - WAY cooler phones that can work anywhere are available only through GSM

i think this plan is intended to attract disgruntled ex-Fido, Rogers users after the acquisition .. tho i wouldn't be surprised if they too became disgruntled after joining Telus/Bell .. u gotta love all the great 'options' we hav here in this country ..

shared towers:
bell uses telus towers, but telus has more towers that arent shared as well (490 of those were put up last year itself)

rogers and fido share all their towers as far as i know

and iDen is the new version of TDMA developed by motorola, even though its only a digital network, its far better in terms of coverage and signal than CDMA and GSM here in north america due to the existence of cdma/1x/3g/whatever otehr names they wanna use for it.

PS. iDen is available through telus under the name of MIKE and currently uses sim cards too only its a slightly lower frequency than gsm so u cant swap gsm and iDen cards/fones

damn i love my MIKE

EDIT: Flec, u only know this offer now??? its been aroudn since mid november

EDIT 2: whats the point of a cool fone if ur service sucks?

it was a 1.5 month contract and it ended in december....

PS. regular Telus fone coverage sucks, iDen ALL the way

Was interesting... read recently that Nextel is the largest iDen carrier in the USA, but Sprint is now in the process of buying them. Sprint also announced that they are going to phase out iDen. Without a huge backer in the States, even if it is a great technology, may not have that much of a rosy future.
