Such thing as tracks that are impossible to mix?

or tracks that are 'nearly' impossible to blend/mix in with other tracks? just curious...

Delerium - Silence (Airscape mix). It came on my Delerium - Poem album and it has no nice minute or two intro and outro beats to mix in and out. I guess it's not really supposed to be mixed, but I can still try. Unsucessfully.

Orbitals tune "Rest", hopeless.

most of dillinja's tunes are very hard to mix. not impossible mind. but he has a number of tracks that are 2 to 3 minutes long with long periods of ambience or silence and a beat that starts out of nowhere. no warning. you just have to know the record off by heart. and even then i dont know many people that mix dillinja tunes because they are quote: 'arsey.'

theres a couple of chemical brothers tunes (from dig your own hole i think) that change tempo mid song. which is an absolute pain in the arse. high contrast's dnb remix of future sound of london's papua new guinea also does this although it goes back back to normal speed about 1:00 from the end so its ok. the first time i heard it pitching down though i was like 'shit! ive only got half an inch of record left, i suck at beatmatching and i havent got a tune that goes into breakbeat speed! help!'

It can be mixed. The Airscape mix is about 8 minutes long, and that can be mixed quite easily actually. You might have the radio version on that album, and even that is mixable if you have the right tunes before and after it...

Chicane - Saltwater
the outro of the song is a bit breaky

DJ ROLANDO - Jaguar (Derrick may mayday mix)
this track is possible to beatmatch and get in time/ phase etc, but the beat is so random that it sounds like shiite even when perfectly mixed. its annoying cus i really like the track but so far have never been able to mix it in live.

One record in my collection that I find particualrly challenging is Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Michael Woods Mix). There aren't really any beats in it I can mix to.

plastikman - hypokondriak

the pitch on the track progressively shifts all throughout...

anytrack that has a steady beat is potentialy mixable
some chris clack stuff has no steady beat at all and are imposible to mix

Only record I know that I have which is an arse to mix is Blockster - Grooveline, its not that its hard to hear the beat or that it speeds up or down, it just has a high energy end to it and instead of it gradually going down to a beat near the end, it just fades out like a radio mix, so its possible to mix, but hard to make sound good, but I don't mix it much anyway, think it was 6 years ago I last mixed it, as for tracks that goto breakbeat near the end, when I hear them kick in, it gets easier for me, other than that there are a couple tunes I got that are hard but can be mixed, if SOMETHING, ANYTHING has a rhythm, then it can be mixed.

Agreed, this is really hard to mix. The intro is very busy aswell, so it's hard to mix into... I've had no luck trying to incorporate it into any of my mixes, and obviously I'll never play it out cos I'll fuck it it

Just mix out before the breaks kick in, I've done that afew times depending on my set, but the breaks can really add to the set if you let them play for awhile over the top of another well picked tune, same goes for BT - Flamming June.

JDS - Disco Rocker

not impossible at all but just towards the end of the track theres an extra 2 beats stuck in at the end of a bar which throws the mix right off. Really dont understand what the guy was thinking when he did that.

William Orbit - Barber's Adiago For Strings (Original)
The strings just won't fit anything...

Posted by 3xx3r7 on Feb-05-2005 03:10:

The Orb - From a Distance (Hybrid Remix)

Probably more of an intro track. Really long beatless intro.

Also, original of Armin van Buuren - Burned with Desire, no beats at all.

I keep having trouble with :

Ruudaman - Heaven Is A Place On Earth

God DAMNIT, I can never mix that F&*^$CKING Song!!

I have a record where the track was recorded on iffy equipment, and the sound is all over the place.

I know exactly what you mean. I used to think Flaming June was one of the hardest songs to mix well. The breaks in the last two minutes are very distracting unless you can keep the beat in your head. But after some experimentation, I've found that if you pick the right song, the breaks sound kickass on top of the track you're bringing in. You just have to bring the song in really early.

You mention mixing out of Flaming June, but the intro is tough too. You've got that long, beatless intro that goes right into breakbeats. Without a trained ear, there's no way you can mix in before the breakbeats, and if you cue right when the breakbeats start, there's already too much going on in the song for it to be a nice mix in. TOUGH SONG.

Another song I've found difficult to do right is most versions of UNKLE - In a State. Most remixes have the piano melody in the intro, where the tempo slows down considerably, making it impossible to mix over anything with a beat very well. If I'm mixing into In a State, it'll usually be during a breakdown in another track, or by backspinning right into it or something.

if worse comes to worse just volume mix it. It might be super noobish but thats always a last resort or use filters/kills to mix it.
