Idea Buy Someone a Star?

this is my FAR the stupidest shit i ever seen on the internet:

Buy yourself or someone a star for $89 USD

"For just $89 USD you get a Star Kit from Global Star Registry complete with a signed and sealed Official Certificate confirming the dedicated name and astronomical coordinates of your very own star. You also get a sky map that helps you locate your star in the sky and provides you with a unique perspective to its surroundings - plus a sumptuously illustrated, easy-to-read book about the stars by the celebrated British astronomer Dr Patrick Moore.

Decide today to write your own or someone else's name in the sky forever. It's simply the greatest gift in the universe. "

i highly doubt beings would be able to survive the heat and gas content of a star.

I wonder what gives that company the right to sell stars at a profit. Its not like they own it in the first place.

Actually, they are not selling the star itself, just the imprint of it at the sky

It's not really official and not recognized. Sceintists aren't sitting around talking about the Amy star and the Jessica star.

I bought my dad a star for his birthday a few years ago - he loved it! It's not the star name you pay for so much as it is the print-out and the star-map in the frame. I thought it was a wonderful gift and I wouldn't mind doing it again for someone someday.

There's soooo many stars out there, and they need more interesting names than XF-4325215B, ya know? Poor little fellas need to feel loved, too.

And it was $50 when I did it... guess maybe it's catching on?

Why did you waste your money

These star registry companies are basically scamming your money. They have no authority to assign names to a star.

"Here's the problem: Stars are named by the International Astronomical Union -- and they aren't selling. Names for stars (and most are given numbers) are assigned according to the internationally accepted rules of the IAU. Anyone else who claims to be able to name stars has no more legal standing than your neighbor's Rottweiler. When they say your star is going into a "registry," they mean whatever registry they made up -- not the official catalog that is kept by the IAU and used by all astronomers.
According to the IAU's Web site, "such 'names' have no formal or official validity whatever. Like true love and many of the other best things in human life, the beauty of the night sky is not for sale, but is free for all to enjoy."

If you want to give someone a star, save yourself some money: Go to the closest planetarium, pick a star you think is pretty and ask the astronomer for the coordinates. Then go home and make your own certificate on your own computer.

There's this guy that somehow registered the moon and I think some planets as his own personal property through some loophole in the legal system.

Now he's selling acres of moon land. Maybe you could buy some of that.

Is this what you resort to when you've already given someone one of each chia pet?

You cant buy land on the moon. The aliens living underground the moon & earth would kick our ass's if we decided to settle the moon. The aliens werent even happy about us landing on the moon back in 1969. They gave NASA limited access to the moon & oberserved our every move while there. So its impossible.
