Mixing Technique???

I am a new DJ, got my tables a week and a half ago.When I mix trance or any dance music I use the corssfader. I have heard of people keeping both channels on at the same time, and mixing the two songs by using the volume controls on each channel. Do people use that method? What do you think is the best way to do it? What do they pros do?

Its easier to do smooth mixes if you leave the crossfader in the middle and use the channel faders to mix. Most pros mix that way and ride the pitch. Its not a rule but thats what most pros do.

Since dance music requires a lot more precision in your mix, I mix with the main faders. If I'm mixing hip-hop though (or any music which I'm switching the sound between decks a lot), I'll open up the faders and just use the xfader.

you can be a lot smoother with the volume faders, for the most part.

if you progress enough, you may want to experiment playing 3 things at once, and such.

most pro's use the volume faders. it's also good to get used to mix like this since then you won't have to adapt to crossfader curves if you mix on another mixer (the crossfader curve is the proportion of how much sound from which source comes in/fades out when sliding the crossfader. it is adjustable on some mixers, and rarely do 2 mixers have identical curves, therefore, if you get used to mixing with your CF curve, when you go out, it won't be pretty. shitty mixers do have shitty volume curves on the volume faders, but good ones, have very very similar, if not identical, gradual curves, as it is the way it should be).

you can also do a mix of each. my friend who plays techno on 3 decks plays with the volume faders, the crossfader, and even attacks the crossfader inverse option, if supplied on the mixer.
