Buying a new video card, need opinions

Where and what should I buy, my budget is 150-200 bucks and I'm planning on buying it tomorrow.

Another question, I bought an MDG computer friday with an Intel integrated video card, can I install a new card without any issues?

How would it run games like half life 2 or doom 3?

Posted by smuncky on Feb-07-2005 01:31:

it would do fine

im not really an expert on vid cards but in the radeon series its goes up like this, 9000, 9200, 9600, 9800

and then theres like 9000se, 9600xt (which i think is almost like the 9800), then there are also All in wonder cards.

go to a tech forum and ask around there.

ati never had a problem with

I ran Doom3 and Half-Life 2 on a Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB that is probably 2 years old now. Perfectly fine at 1280x1024 with graphics options mostly medium, some low.

Get a 9800 if you can afford it/find one that cheap.

So you guys would reccomend ATI over Geforce cards?

Would $229.99 be considered cheap

if you live in mississauga, check out a place called IO-systems...

it's behind the red lobster at burnhamthorpe and mavis... the dude is a real nice guy.. gives you a good price...

One quick question:

Is there a huge difference in the 9800SE 128M DDR TV/O and the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB as far as performance goes?

I'm pretty decided on the Radeon 9800 but it's just that the pro is another 70 bucks, unless of course there is a cheaper place to grab it (cheaper than 300 bucks)

Posted by smuncky on Feb-07-2005 03:23:

i wouldnt spend it personally

the 9800 will give u outstandin gperformance

fist of all.. you need to check if your mobo(mother board) has an AGP port that supports 8x graphics apature... if it does.. (im guessing u know this) than u should consider buying the new video card.. if it doesnt.. then thats money.. well.. wasted!

if you do have an 8x agp port like i said... then you should consider buying a third party radeon 9800 se.. by powercolor... it can be softmodded to 9800pro.. so u dont have to spend the extra $$ on a pro card...

well.. that what i got.. and it still serving me rite.. gets me 40+ fps in hl2 w/ high qual settings..

If you're installing the card in a computer you just bought, you need to check the specs on it to see if your mobo is AGP or PCI Express. It won't affect the price much, but I don't think AGP video cards will fit in a PCIx slot, so be careful.

Posted by Blue. on Feb-07-2005 22:12:

O.K quick question, I tried putting my Radeon 8500 (it's AGP) into the slot and it looks like it should fit but the slot is about half an inch too far away, does that mean it's a different type of AGP slot? ATI's website says the 8500 is for AGP 2X/4X systems, I just want a rough idea of what type of slot it is for when I go buy a new card.

Posted by Pett on Feb-07-2005 22:36:

it'll probley fit, just take the sqrew out and slide'r in

Posted by Blue. on Feb-07-2005 22:46:

I think I'm gonna go with the 9800 PRo

Looks as if I have a PCI-E x16 slot

Can I get some reccomendations other than tossing my computer out the window?

PCI Express 16 is the newest technology, so I wouldn't rush into vandalism so fast.

The Sapphire Radeon X600 Pro 128MB (ATI chipset) is a decent card for about $130. You can go a step up and get the Radeon X600 XT 256MB for just slightly over $200 - I'd recommend the latter, personally.

I do not recommend getting PowerColor or Abit cards. Stick with Sapphire or genuine ATI.

Now I just need a place in the Mississauga area to get it.

Canada Computers has a location in Mississauga. And there's always pricenetwork.ca to find the store with the best deal.

Yea, be happy you have PCI-E cause it's the newest thing on the block right now

Get a BFG Geforce 6600GT from Canada Computers, it's $299, so a little bit out of your price range, but the performance the Geforces give you is amazing, compared to their price.

As far as PCI-Express goes I only saw dual DV out cards on the site.
