Guys this is some serious ****

Citing what it calls U.S. threats to topple its political system, North Korea said it is dropping out of six-party nuclear talks and will "bolster its nuclear weapons arsenal," the country's official news agency KCNA said Thursday.

God help us. Hopefully this can be settled in diplomatic manner.

This is why it's fucked up that we go after Iraq which really wasn't a threat to us while N Korea has nukes...now thats a threat.

Posted by UWM on Feb-10-2005 19:46:

I've been reading up on this. Most likely they're just trying to get negotiation leverage with the United States now focusing more of its efforts on Iran.

I really hope this is true and that they are sane enough not to do anything stupid. For all I know, this can be a signal for WWIII. Scary shit.

i wouldnt go as far as saying that this would be WWIII. it sounds like North Korea is alone and wouldn't have the backing to do enough damage to start a world war.

Posted by Lira on Feb-10-2005 19:51:

Bah, come on.

Nuclear weapons have become a simple matter of diplomacy. It's not like they're going to bomb other countries, they're just showing they're "independent".

Do you think China wouldn't help NK? I think that's important to take in account. But i really hope this gets settled without bloodshed.

The US is shit scared of North Korea. They arent gonna go & bulley them with air attacks because North Korea has the Nukes & that's the way they like it. Things arent going to change & North Korea will never give up their Nukes. Power for a small country is good in their eyes.

I don't know anything about politics, but good point Lira. That sounds right.

Lots of countries have nukes, this is nothing new. NK, and just about every other nuke wielding country, knows that if they start flashing them around and pointing them at other people, the whole world is gonna send 100 down their throat and vaporize their country. NK knows this, and NK doesn't want this.

They made nukes so the U.S. would think twice about invading them, since it's obvious that Bush doesn't give a rats ass about the constitution or UN law and will just invade whoever the fuck he wants to.

lollerskates.

The United States has more firepower than North Korea by a LONGSHOT. There are at least a dozen of the most powerful, advanced nuclear submarines in the world parked about sixty miles from where I'm sitting right now, in fact. That fleet alone would be enough to reduce North Korea to... uhm... nothing?

I'm not saying that I think this will come to military conflict. On the contrary, North Korea is blowing smoke up everyone's asses. Sure, they have a bit of nuclear technology... but they were also one of the last nations to jump on that bandwagon. They're just trying to assert themselves as a world power, which they clearly aren't. This issue will be resolved within the forseeable future. Korea will be forced to disarm, guaranteed.

China, on the other hand... that's not a country I would want to fuck around with as far as military power is concerned. They've got some nasty shit in their arsenal.

Posted by Citizen X on Feb-10-2005 21:57:

typical American mentality, you are brainwashed to feel threatened from nukes so that you take your mind away from the little things that will impact your lives much more than some rusty atom bomb in a third world nation.

Punisher's got it right. nK would turn into a lunar landscape in hours with a massive US counterstrike if they dared to flash one of their nukes in an aggressive move. China is the second most powerful nation on earth. Everyone's overlooking the big picture. Japan rearming with nuclear weapons in response as a real threat to the entire Pacific region. Think about it.

US aint gonna do shit.

The only reason Bush went after Iraq is because he knew for a fact that Saddam Husein didn't have any gear to retailiate with.

Even dubya is smart enough to realize that invading that speck of land just might mean a nuclear missile or two heading right into Hollywood.

Good for North Korea, US is getting too full of itself

There was a discussion about this in the political forums a while ago. NK will never attack the U.S. because if they did, China wouldnt have it. they depend way to much on China economically and politically, and China will never come to their aid because a large percentage of their economy is credited to exporting goods to the U.S., so China would never take aggressive action against the U.S.

Yeah true. China is the world's number 1 growing economy.

Japan will defend herself. The US is pulling troops out of South Korea. The brigade it deployed to Afghanistan will not return to Korea and the US may send the remaining 2ID manuever brigade elsewhere on a non-returning mission as part of an overall strategy of troop withdrawal. Kinda makes sense. We can put force on the ground fairly quickly these days and don't need an indigenous force suffering first strike blows from a nK attack. If the US would counterattack as a result of a nK offensive at the south, we could attack them directly by lodging offshore forces in the north where it would hurt them the most instead of attacking them from the south upwards against the layers of defensive barriers they have erected over the past 50 years.

If we pull out 100% tho I think it shows a real lack of caring on our part for sK... but with Iran coming up in the next couple years, I can see it happening.

Hmm. I don't know. I think U.S. needs forces to remain in SK just to have a tiny overseer of what NK does.
