what effect is it called when a melody is chopped up into 16th notes? it like, segments the sound so instead of say, a solid 4 bar whole note, it is chopped into 16ths, or 8ths, or whatever. ummm... an example would be the first track of Ian Brown � Fear (UNKLE Mix).

search for 'gate' in the production forums, there have been some threads about it in the past with some nice links to freeware gate fx with pattern drawing also
