Italian DJ Fined 1.4 Mln Euros for Music Piracy

ROME (Reuters) - An Italian DJ has been fined a record 1.4 million euros ($1.8 million) for using thousands of pirate music files in a nightclub near Rome, police said on Wednesday.
Police in the town of Rieti, near Rome, said they raided a popular nightclub earlier this week as part of a crackdown on piracy and seized 500 illegally copied music videos and more than 2,000 MP3 music files.

Police said the files belonged to a "well-known" Italian DJ.

"For the MP3 files, which were kept on the DJ's personal computer, the DJ has received a fine of 1.4 million euros," Rieti finance police said in a statement.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said the fine was the biggest ever slapped on an individual for unlawful music copying and the use of copyrighted music in the MP3 format.

More than 7,000 legal actions have been launched against alleged uploaders in the United States, Canada and countries in Europe as the music industry fights to stop piracy which it blames for a decline over a number of years in CD sales.

All things considered, Danny D gets near 'em... i believe you may be right.

That's insane.

They have crucified him as an example to every other DJ out there. Personally, I think the fine is way too much, but I can't really judge from where I sit.

exactly, the exorbitant fine is more of a scare tactic for other would be dj's out there. either way it still sucks though...

whats a dj to do if he wants to play songs that aren't available on cd??? i believe in supporting artists and so on, but with every song of your collection, thats not always possible. if your entire collection is all bootlegged, that would be a problem.

500 mp3s is nothing, i bet you these cops dont know jack shit about the MP3 scene, theyd be sewing half the world if they did

OMG... has the music industry gone mad? It's the dj that get's ppl excited about the music. If you start bustin every dj... then ppl aren't going to know about the good stuff out there.

I hope for the dj's sake he had originals at home somewhere and was protecting his investments by copying them for frequent use.

You're right, although I think this is more a case of abuse.

500 copied music videos ! I don't think that's normal
2000 Mp3's - Ok, that's nothing at all, but at the same time, you have to ask: Is that all he had? I mean, was he running entire sets from stolen music, or did he purchase music as well. I don't think this guy had ever bought a record.

That's why he was crucified.

anyway, this is an italian dj with brasilian roots as the newspapers say but anybody writes the right name.

I think it's f*ckin ironic that the Italian police are actually enforcing the law at all, let alone something like this, when they do NOTHING about assaults, wife abuse and other crimes.
From my experiece travelling there in '96, and needing the (useless) assistance of the police, I found out many disheartening things about their 'legal' system. Basically, u have NO rights if u are violated.
The things I learned from my police officer there:
-If assaulted, the police can not arrest the accused, unless your injuries last for 10 days, and only then can they charge him. (I take it these have to be grievous injuries)
-Many women who have been abused by their husbands have been coerced by the police upon arrival to just 'drop' the charges, kiss & make up.
-If your car is broken into, no matter how many witnesses saw the perpetrator, unless the guy is sitting in a broken into car, they can not hold him.

I had to ask if murder was against the law, or was there some sort of condition it had to meet too.

No wonder the mafia is from there.
