Hard drive question, IDE CONNECTORS?

Just a quick question for someone who knows about computer connections.

I am going to purchase a new hard drive, and in the picture below you can see an extra "power strip?" strapped onto the black straps, im guessing that can be used for the extra hard drive that I will put it in?

Another question is the yellow/red/black connector.. there is only one connector as you can see from the pic below and there isnt any extra from what I could see. If I were to purchase one where would it be inserted?

^^ confused

Thanks in advance for any help.. here is a pic to see whats going on.

the wide one is the ide cable, that will go into the HDD, but it looks like you'll need a new power one. depending upon your powersource, you may either need a new one of those, or you can just pick up a y-cable from tigerdirect.

Thank you for clearing that up Zench..

What about my powersource would determine if I would need NEW power plug, or I can just buy a Y-cable?

cut the blue wire, not the red wire!!

Thanks alot for clearing that up you guys, so using the spare IDE cable attached to the existing hard drive is ok for the new HD I am going to get? Along with a y-cable to split the powercable on the existing drive to go into the new one?

... I think im getting too paranoid

Thanks again!

That reminds me...how do I know the extent of power I need to draw? I want to buy a new mobo but im scared that, with the plethora of shit that I have in there, Ill blow up my system

Last question..

For the jumper settings.. according to this picture.. I would leave the master which is currently the one in my comp on the first set of pins? And for my new HD I would just take the pin off so that it remains a "SLAVE"?

Depends on the drive really, it can vary from drive to drive, and also on the mobo, best bet is to set the jumpers to slave if its on the middle connector.

goes like this:

|---->Master

|---->Slave
|
|
|
|
|
|-->IDE_1 or IDE_2

Cable select will work most of the time, and usually you dont even have to set a jumper for it (least with all the drives I have, then again they are all Maxtors, so they probably all the same... ).

Just look on the top of the drive or the manual and it will tell you how to set it up. Just make sure you dont set it as the primary master, as that is usually your OS's drive.

Ultimate solution for any IDE questions: fuck it and get SATA caz it dosnt use 40+ year old cables to connect it.

Also thanks, you inspired me to tidy up my case a bit! Its much nicer now!

hehe, my os is on secondary slave

installing a new hdd is much more difficult than just changing the jumper settings

the ide cable after it leaves the motherboard will have connections you can plug an hdd into. the middle one is designated to the "Slave" HDD, the end for "Master". the master hdd will be the one recognised by the bios first. this will be the C:, the slave will be D: and so on and so on

if you wish to configure the jumpers correctly the above diagram will not be accurate. the correct jumper settings will be displayed on the HDD, itself
