Best/most recent model?

What's the most recent or best quality model of the Technics turntables? Is it still the MK2s or is there anything better? I haven't checked in awhile.

Posted by CraSHer[UK] on Feb-22-2005 20:29:

there are more recent models.

Mk5 and Mk5G limited edition.

Not much difference in performance, larger pitch range, clickless pitch control, and some fancy new lighting.

Which model do you think is "essential" for a starting DJ. Like which model has everything a DJ needs minus the extra, maybe unnecessary stuff.

Posted by CraSHer[UK] on Feb-22-2005 20:38:

for a starting dj, I dont feel a technics turntable is essential. There are some alternatives out there, have a look at vestax and the stanton turntables if you have the cash.

Although i will say the Mk2 would suffice even the most proffesional dj, and you would be crazy to spend extra on the fancier models unless you were really flush.

Yea theres no real need to go out and get the most expensive techs around... there all basically the same inside in the end, I reccomend doing your research on the net of all the major brands and then going around to the local dj stores and having a play on there floor models... There are decks out there with alot more features than even the newest tech's

Posted by Psionic on Feb-22-2005 23:22:

I wish I could test their floor models, but there are only a couple places near me that sell DJ equipment, and none of them allow the person to actually test the turntables out

As for the model, if I were to get MK2s do you think that it would last me from my beginning as a DJ up to actually getting gigs or will I need a better model when going outside the bedroom?

Edit: If I have a choice between the SL-1600, SL-1210 and SL-1200 models, which is better?

Posted by dj chex on Feb-22-2005 23:51:

if you get 1200mk2s they will last you as long as you own them. Also, if you mostly mix, they should be fine. But for scratching there are better choices imo. Then again, if your planing on competing in the future at lets say a dmc sationed battle, you will be using mk2s. MK2s are good, but for around the same cost you can get the MK5 and it's a better value due to the clickless pitch, and the LED stylus lamp...

Are MK5s what DJs use in clubs and at events?

I see mainly MK2s at clubs and events because of the sheer number of units that have been manufactured. The MK5 isn't much better than the MK2s if at all, the difference is the power switch and no click at 0.

Posted by Rememberence_ on Feb-23-2005 02:19:

yeah and the pitch reset button, which you won't really use while spinning. The are pretty much the same... I guess I find that when I spin on MK5's they are generally nicer because they are newer and the pitch control still feels nice, whereas some MK2's that people still have just have so many hours of use and prolly need a new pitch control. Same shit though

Posted by Psionic on Feb-23-2005 02:25:

Ok, and is there any major difference between the three models I posted above? (SL-1600, SL-1210 and SL-1200 models)

Posted by gcrasher on Feb-23-2005 02:30:

There's the M3Ds, which arent too much more than the MK2s and they have the smooth pitch control without the click. Also, I thought there was an issue with the MK2s having 2 zero points right around the middle of the pitch, which was resolved with the later models.

That sounds like a pitch fader that needs to be cleaned and recalibrated or replced.

Usually the 2nd 0% point on the 1200 is also caused by incorrect resistance on the POT. It's easily adjusted though.

where are you in NJ? I am up north and there are a few places that have TTs set-up.

You will not find much of a difference in the feel of a Technics TT. Wether its the mk2, m3d, mk5, m5g...they all feel the same. Its not like sitting on couches before you buy them. If you know what one Tehnics feels like, you know what the yall feel like. Thats what makes them so damn good.

I'm in Union County, so that's north/central. Where in NJ are you? Haha nice to see some people from NJ on these boards What stores near you sell DJ equipment/vinyl/etc. and what towns are they in?

Posted by ieko on Feb-24-2005 00:14:

I personally really dislike the MK2's because of the 0 pitch click (thought it can be disabled) I just find it annoying. I'd suggest the M3D since it's the next step up and there's no pitch click.

Going any higher on the Technics line isn't really necessary, there's virtually no difference between the MK5 and M3D, and you'll probably never need the extra pitch range on the M5G, though they do look nice

I am in Essex County. There are a bunch of people from this area on the boards.

There are 2 places you can go for vinyl in NJ, that I know of. I am not saying they are good stores, but they are stores none the less.

Music-
Mondo Music - Rutherford - I still need to actually go in to a physical store once a week, hold the vinyls in my hand, etc, so I go to Mondo. Its a Jersey DJ store - lots of house, tribal, etc. Some big room trance and a decent amount of progressive house. Its definately hit or miss. I have walked out with a lot on some days and nothing at all on others. Dont expect to walk in there after not buying records for a month and walk out with 15 vinyls. Probably wont happen.

Music is Everything - Red Bank - He's trying. Not a bad little store. Prices are good. Selection isnt bad...not great though. Again, its Jersey.

Gear-
Guitar Center in Totowa, and I think there is one on 22 in Union or one of those towns.

Mondo also has some gear, but the prices are high.

Sam Ash - I know there is one in Paramus and I am sure there is one further south.
