this food additive causing cancer

does anyone give a rats ?

Posted by Coup on Feb-24-2005 19:56:

i don't even know where to begin to reply to that.

Posted by [mart] on Feb-24-2005 19:56:

Not really. It's probably one of thousands of potentially harmful additives hidden in the foods we eat.

Posted by Coup on Feb-24-2005 20:01:

i think people have the right to be informed if something as serious as an illegal substance that can cause cancer has been leaked into foods.

if someone you're close to died because no1 cared enough to mention the foods involved, i think you'd have a different view.

Posted by Technaut on Feb-24-2005 20:06:

did someone you know die coup?

Posted by Coup on Feb-24-2005 20:13:

no but thats not the point.

Posted by Phil r on Feb-24-2005 20:41:

everything's killing us..

at least with controlled substances you get a more interesting ride

there was a program on tv a few weeks back: can i trust: sausages.

Posted by Coup on Feb-24-2005 21:12:

granted if u knew everything about what goes on in everything you'd probably end up starving yourself, but this is only a temp situation with such massive results if u are effected, so i think saying avoid foods x, y, and z for x weeks is a good decision.

the problem with sudan 1 is that it's highly carcinogenic as opposed to "if you sunbath too long you might get cancer". rememebr it's not an additive, its actually a dye.

and yeh i saw the sausage program. and a few of the other ones in the series.

and in reference to this Sudan 1 thing, as a worker at the front line of food retail, AND as a pharmacologist.

I say, that its probably not as bad as it seems. To get cancer from sudan 1, you'd probably have to eat a lot of it, on a regular basis for a prolonged amount of time, before you'd even begin to start developing cancer of the bowel or something. Think of cigarettes, the stuff in them is HIGHLY carcinogenic with a greater chance of causing cancer with sudan 1, but a lot of people are happily getting by

The amount of it that is in food, is extremely small. If you look up the risks for Aspartame (the sweetener in diet coke) that is also attributed to health risks (even cancer iirc), but you'd have to have so much of it.

So in summary, if you've eaten anything with it in, don't worry too much, but i'd avoid eating 10 more packs of pot noodle, only eat a few more

yeah heheh there was a question about this in my pub quiz the other night

So I care because I got the answer right

Posted by svens_bath on Feb-25-2005 14:50:

from what i make of all this is that sudan 1 is a KNOWN carcinogen, and so as such its something we should cut out our exposure to, as we dont know about other as yet undiscovered carcinogenic sources, and so the more of these things you cut out, the lower the risk you put yourself at. it does matter beacuse although by itself eating it is unlikely to cause cancer, combined with the many other carcinogenic sources that are around us, it might.

however i would also add that you should remember that it was found to cause cancerin mice and not human pot noodle fiends as yet.

BUT I'VE BEEN FEEDING SUDACREM (sp) to all my pet mice. i don't want them to die. yet. i want to do experiments on them first.

sort of seriously tho, not to start an international flame war (although that would be quite fun) but it seems like all most of the TV here more and more is going stateside (USA) style "watch out and phe4r, stuffs bad for you" (i saw bowling for columbine last week)

You cant trust anyone these days, the money-grabbing, corner-cutting, cheap-labour-supporting raggamuffins.
