Is Basketball is a game for freaks?

Please prove me wrong.

Unlike all other sports where there is a position for people of all sizes and shapes (well, nearly), in basketball you need to be an absolute giant to play.

Where do these super tall people come from?

You barely see any around, in Australia at least.

When I was at school there was this one kid that was way tall for his age, and he quickly got sent away to basketball camp, and he couldn't even play the game!

So the way I see it you just need to be born with abnormal size issues and with some basic coaching you can play the game.

Posted by Partibrejker on Feb-25-2005 22:43:

thats not true // you can be average height and have the shot and skills and be an awesome player ... look at Allen Iverson for an example he isnt that big he says hes 6 2 but everybody knows hes around 5 11 to 6 // even if you are big guy if you dont have the shot and the skills u gonna suck ... only time u gonna be able to score is if u get under the basket and most time then u gonna get fouled and wont make free throws so either way if you are 7 feet tall and u dont have no leg movement no shooting touch you are not going to be a good player ... you might get into NBA and will be let go in a year when theyh find out u really suck ...

Posted by Dmatrox on Feb-25-2005 23:20:

steve nash isnt that tall and its a great player

i think the freaks are wrestlers. Building all that muscle mass to compete in a fake sport.

Posted by Xavier on Feb-26-2005 00:00:

I use to play basketball.

I remember opponents and teammates who were younger than me and who I was taller then, the ones who have continued to play (seriously), have now unbelievably grown taller, and I dunno how their legs got so friggin long! It was like only yesterday I was looking down on them, and now the tables have been turned!

Oh mind you I also remember playing against these little midgets, and they were 3 pointer freaks! I gurantee you would hardly ever seem the miss, it was like for 24/7 they trained shooting 3 pointers non stop.

Posted by Snagglepulse on Feb-26-2005 01:45:

Back when I was around eight years old, I was around 4'5" and I played basketball a lot. I got to be quite good at it with plenty of practice. I remember being better than a few people taller than me at the time because I practiced often. Now, I'm 5'10", and I'm not as good as how I used to be. That was because I don't play it too often as how I used to.

Posted by Partibrejker on Feb-26-2005 05:17:

it all matters if u practice .... just like any sport ... dont matter if u r tall or big or whatever if you aint got skills and dont practice u r gonna suck

Posted by Shamez214 on Feb-26-2005 07:36:

Wasn't John Stockton short? And he was one of the greatest Guards of all time.

Posted by Shamez214 on Feb-26-2005 07:37:

This is actually real dumb seeing as most professional baseball players are over 6 feet tall. I believe the same can be said with soccer.

Posted by 3jaz on Feb-26-2005 08:59:

mugsy bogues

shortest player: Tyronne "Mugsy" Bogues 5'3"

shortest player to dunk basketball: Tyronne "Mugsy" Bogues

Posted by tbias on Feb-27-2005 23:10:

Righto then.

So you have 6 players in the history of the NBA that were under 6 feet tall and all of a sudden its a game that everyone can play?

Get a grip...

Posted by chanman7483 on Feb-28-2005 06:18:

You have to be abnormal in some ways to play any sport.

Basketball, height defeintly counts. The tallest players will always be the most coveted b/c well.. it's just easier to score when you're big. But don't make the mistake of thinking that just because someone is tall, they're automatically good.

Posted by 1Million$shot on Feb-28-2005 17:09:

You get a grip,

if you work hard to achieve a particular goal, anything is possible.

Even in Bbal. You don't have to be tall to play bbal. Just work hard enough, do some powertraining, work on the explosivity of your actions, be smart on the court, ... I mean look at Shawn Bradley or Greg Ostertag, those guys are like really big giants and they get blocked all the time by little guys because they're the most retarded players around. Big isn't better, it just helps.

Nearly every sport has tall players.

How can you even begin to compare the percentage of players over 6'2" and the average height of basketball players with any other sport?

Posted by sensorium on Feb-28-2005 23:42:

Being tall has nothing with being a freak. Having more than one penis, now I would consider that freak.

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-01-2005 22:24:

The majority of baseball players are over 6'2.

This is still real silly. The point of basketball is to get a ball in a hoop that is 10 feet high. OBVIOUSLY, the taller you are, the easier it is for you to get it into that basket... You don't see many 5'6 goalies in soccer, do you?

Posted by Partibrejker on Mar-02-2005 17:58:

marcus banks from celtics blocked a 7 footer dunk and took him down .. one of the best dunks i have ever seen ... and whats marcus barely 6 feet tall ... obviously if u are taller in basketball u have advantage over a shorter but like any sport there is always something thats needed ...

if u run fast u gonna be able to kick the ball by an oppenonet and run around him and get to the ball and u dont need any ball skills

if u r tall WR u gonna be able to jump over defenders and catch the ball ..

but all that u need to practice in order to work .. u cant just be tall and play basketball and have no shot ... u cant just be fast and kick the ball and outrun a player in soccer if u dont know the common sense of soccer and where to kick the ball and u can be tall as u want as a WR but if u cant catch the damn thing u can go to helll then ... PRACTICE PRACTICE thats the word

Well, basket ball was started of a dude in an Amarican Highschool. He wanted a game where u didnt have to be a giant or a super strong, he wanted a game where every1 could score. Thats why basket ball was invented.

Its true that moste of the players in NBA are big monsters, but there are ppl who aint that big. One of the best point guards in NBA is Charles Barkley, and he is not tall at all.

But there are other countries who are better then the USA in basketball, Russia are the number one basket ball country in the world. They have smashed the Dream Team of NBA several times, and they are not stronger or taller then them, they are just faster with the ball.
I was once the tallest on my team, now im the smalest

Basket ball owns!

There have been a hell of a lot more than 6 players under 6 foot that have played in the NBA. In the NBa just at the moment theres Earl Boykins, Yuta Tabuse, Speedy Claxton, Jameer Nelson Allen Iverson... Allen Iverson is currently the highest scoring player in the NBA and has won previous scoring titles and he is only 6ft and 175lbs.

Charles Barkley was a center, probably the position most opposite to PG, and retired a fair while ago. He was by no means small either! He was 6ft 9/10ish and built! This guy started a fight with Shaq one time!

THE Dream Team was never ever beaten. They totally destroyed the '92 olympics and were probably the greatest team in basketball history! No USA team has lived up to them since and none of them have every been 'smashed' at all. The 2004 olympic team was beaten on a few occasions but ever by a large margin and considering the team sent out consisted of many 5th, 6th, 7th rate players for the respective postitions its not surprising. Russia no. 1 in the world? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Argentina win gold at the olympics?

Posted by Incantation_UK on Mar-05-2005 23:42:

Also, one of the most famous winners of the slam dunk contest was 5ft 7" Spud Webb. He won the contest with dunks including a reverse and a 360 and beat dunk legend Dominique Wilkins to do so!

I hate basketball...worst "big" sport out there.

How many players are actually less than 6 feet (which still isn't even average height anywhere in the world)? It's such a boring game to watch too...walk up the court, get into position, jockey for better position, pass, dribble, dunk/lay up/close shot/occasional three pointer.

I honestly don't know how anybody watches it, but it is fun to shoot a few hoops once in awhile.

you thought of volleyball?

i'm not dissing it, love playing volley not a big fan of basket neither NBA tho

Posted by Partibrejker on Mar-06-2005 06:42:

dream team was the best team ever put together and that is because they had players such as MJ and Pippen and they werent bunch of jackasses as the USA teams they send now ... one other thing ... Russia never was really good u probobly wanted to say luthunia ... argentina won olympics but they arent better then serbian ( ex yugoslavia) only reason why argentina won olympics was because players such as vlade divac marko jaric and peja stojakovic who are proven good nba players didnt play for serbia and argentina had all their guys ... but they did win it fair and square so good job for them ...

last thing ... if you say nba sucks becuase there is 2 many tall guys playing then you r just a dumbass ... look at bradley shawn from mavericks he sucks and hes what 7'6 huge dude and he cant score for shit .. what happand to being tall ... he just doesnt have the skills and skills is what matters ... AI 6'0 and look at him puting 30 evernight ... why ... cuz he got skills

1)Actually basketball was invented by a Canadian, James Naesmith in the 1890s by using baskets mounted on poles.

2) no, basketball doesn't own. It sucks.
