What to do when your car insurance cancels on you?
A friend of mine just got her car insurance cancelled, becuase she's deemed as a 'high risk' driver. She got into an accident a few months ago, she basically rear-ended someone, in addition to that she also has a couple of tickets. After all is said and done, she ended up losing 4 points. Now in order for her to be reinstated by her insurance company, she would have to pay $600 a month, which she cannot afford. She's called around and every place she's talked to, she was declined.
Basically she has two choices now, move from where she and simply not drive at all or pay the $600 which she cannot afford.
Have any of you been in a similar situation, what are her options? Do any of you know anyone who works at a car insurance company that can possibly help? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Welcome to my world....
have her look into an insurance broker that deals with Kingsway Insurance. Basically, u only have 2 choices, and they are the cheaper one.
I got dropped for 3 minor tickets, with only 2 points on my license. I'm paying $1800 for 6 mos, and thats for liability and life insurance only. Had to drop my collision coverage so I could get a cheaper rate. My car is 8 yrs old anyways.

I believe that her charge (of $600 monthly) does include collision coverage, but I am not sure. Thanks once again. |

).
Sometimes you get a little more leeway if you have home insurance with the same company too (i.e. RBC)

move east
I pay 1400$/y on a 2002 car, with one claim and one speeding ticket, 2 years experience driving.
When I read you're post, the FIRST person I thought of was Nat
but then she gave you some advise already...I wonder if your friend can go without the collision part of the insurance & just have liability...What kind of car does she have?...I know that I drove a shit box for a few years and just had liability but that was because I couldn't afford a newer car.Now I drive a better car & have it fully insured with my condo to save "some" money...I hope things work out for your friend
She lives in Brampton if that's of any help. She drives a Cavalier, I would guess a 98 or a 99.
drive a beater and drop collision, for starters.
no one gets "dropped"...by law auto insurers have to offer you basic coverage...they can deny optional coverage (like collision)
curious to know what "two tickets" means...$600/month sounds a bit high for one minor at fault and a couple of tickets (are we talking major speeding, running lights, etc?). Does she know exactly what's on her record?
Call some brokers and tell them her EXACT driving record up front and get them to call their companies. She won't find "a deal" anywhere, unfortunately, and will have to suck it up for a while. I say go with a beater and basic coverage...
Start taking the rocket.
I did that after 12 years of driving, six cars later.
Work thank God is a 9 min walk.
Reason?
Heavy foot and heavy music.
I should be meeting her today, so hopefully I'll have more information about her driving record and such. Thanks a lot guys, some good info here.
