Holy crap!...pics of the actual tsunami (camera survived, photographer didn't)

Look how far out the ocean was pulled before the wave came in...You can see boats stranded on the sand and a (formerly submerged) coral reef showing completely...It looks like people just were walking out on the sand in awe, not knowing what was coming.

To get a sense of size, compare the normal 3-4 ft waves in the first few pics with the wall of ocean coming in behind them at 150mph...amazing.

nothing that i've not seen already actually saw a show on it on national geographic last night with video footage from several people of the waves coming in.

I find it quite depressing that they showed the couple's picture

no way

i mean damn, its so sad that you see the smiling faces of those who perished. But- these were HIS pictures.......his view, his eyes- and you get the feeling he got right before he had to scramble and say "forget the pictures, im out of here"

and i mean- im not meaning to come off as an insensitive prick, but seeing his face made me appreciate not only the pictures, but HIM.

and i pray for his family.

personally, i think it's essential that they show the picture....

otherwise, it's just a "here's some mad waves from a random camera"

including the picture reminds you that included in the mad waves, those individual peoples lives ended because of it

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Feb-28-2005 19:33:

I agree, Senor Pink.

If whomever took these pictures was worth a damn, they would appreciate the fact that they were remembered for bringing to the world a better sense of what truly happened here. I don't find it insensitive at all, and am more offended at the thought that someone would be trying to preserve some anonymous sanctity for the dead by *not* showing the photos of them - as though their life and times were not something to be proud of.

At the very least, I would want that picture of me there if I had died. That's all I can truly judge on.

Dang, Occrider always hits the nail on the head! If I saw the ocean suddenly vanish in front of me and a white line coming at me from the distance, at least I'd have the senisibility to commence hauling ass real quick. Many of the victims seemed to be too "awe struck" to let common sense take hold, like trying to take pictures instead of flat out running....

That may be true, but let's just say that if you're taking this picture:

And you don't know you're in trouble yet, then you need to get your reflexes tested.
