Orkut (random venting)

I believe most of you are clueless about what Orkut is as, for reasons no one can explain, 50% of its users are Brazilian. Well...
quote:
Orkut is an online community website designed for friends. The main goal of our service is to make your social life, and that of your friends, more active and stimulating. orkut's social network can help you both maintain existing relationships and establish new ones by reaching out to people you've never met before. Who you interact with is entirely up to you. Before getting to know an orkut member, you can even see how they're connecting to you through the friends network.

When I first got there, I was very excited about their communities, which are similar to forums. "Finally a place where I can read about both Industrial music AND psychology", I thought. Also, I would have my friends' contacts always updated.

Weeks passed and I was collecting friends "Pokmon" style. Then people who I don't have any affinity with. Then stalkers. I reckon I could've ignored them but it's just the internet so, meh, who cares if they're on my "friend's list".

The number of communities was increasing as well. Kant, Acid Techno, "In Soviet Russia..." - and that's when I realised how weak the whole concept is. The "Existencialism" community was being flooded with "OMG, I exist!!!1 Can you prove you exist??/" messages. Well, it's true that the Acid Techno community was quite useful but the lack of search engines was a bit of a problem (ironic when you realise that Orkut is part of google), and the abscence of sub-folders created a complete mess. Fun communities became "pron havens", with people saying how they loved their dogs and/or siblings (if you know what I mean), how they had lost their virginity to married men or to teachers in order not to fail the school year (the girl was so desperate I almost cried myself), how they would lie if they were caught cheating (God, I certainly would fall for some of those carefully elaborated excuses)... there was a guy who killed a friend as well... so constantly I would log off in a miserable mood. Some of the saddest things I've ever read were there. That's life, I know.

After exchanging a couple of messages today, I'm deleting my account. Why am I posting this?

We know how rotten the world is, but sometimes we're still impressed when we're slapped in the face
