Margaret Cho

I was reading about her and I think some of her quotes are hilarious (and seem to be very true). Her official website is quite interesting as well, as far as I've seen.

But I've never heard any of you mentioning her. Is she actually any famous? Are there similar comedians?

I found it interesting the way she talks about images though... I'm looking for other comediants that face nationality/sexual orientation/weight in a similar way - could you recommend me some names?

She was really unique when she first came on the scene. She's been around a while, where have you been? She represents first asian american female comedian to make it big. Lots of comedians today do a routine about their ethnicity. Chis Rock's built his career about his "insider" take on the black community. There are lots of comedians with a similar approach as Cho but it's the comedian not the material that make him/her funny. Check out the Comedy Channel although they used feature a lot more standup then they do now.

she's also big in the LGBT community because she's somewhat of an activist

She used to be funny, but not any more. Now she just thinks she's funny. I've seen her live before her last 2 crappy tv specials. Now she just drags 30 minutes of material out to last an hour and a half. She pauses reaaalllly loooong between sentences and she'll say the punchline of a joke over and over and over as if it gets funnier everytime. Plus now she talks way too much about her lesbian experiences and gay friends. Not that I care, it just gets old.

It won't cease to exist until it's not needed anymore.

The way I, an outsider, see it, is that the reason why these comedians make fun of these stereotypes is because they exist. Her quotes show that an "Asian American" is an American nonetheless (I remember someone once posted a hilarious strip of a "European American" slagging a "Filipino" off, even though the Filipino, according to the "European American's" belief was the most American out of them).

One day these jokes will eventually die. In order to see it happening, though, the stereotypes should disappear. The same goes to homossexuality (which she also makes fun of), weight, and so on.

hahaha the only successful korean in the entertainment industry... why havent ppl mentioned about her ? well the reason why i hadnt mentioned her is because......SHE's NOT FUNNY....! i'd love to support her since shes korean but shes aint really funny at all.

Posted by igottaknow on Mar-01-2005 15:11:

I don't have a problem with stereotype jokes, I just get tired of the fad of comedians who base their act around their ethnicity. When you think of the great standups in history they're known for being funny not for their ethinicity and jokes around it. Like josh said that whole "black ppl do this white ppl do that" has been done adnausium.
