residencies?????

the question has arisen in NY club culture, especially in the past 12 months..... Jonathan Peters' departure from Spirit, and Sasha's and Roger Sanchez's simultaneous entry to resident spots have made me think.... what type of residencies are the best? what do u guys think.....

....heres my take... the age of WEEKLY residencies is over, no1 wants to see a DJ every week, no matter how famous the DJ is. i think what clubs need to do, is have a monthly residency (which most do), but they should have a SERIES of monthly residencies.... for example, Spirit, with Saturdays now available... this is what they should do in my opinion.... every first Saturday, have the SAME house DJ such as Donald Glaude (my favorite) or the like.... every second Saturday have the SAME trance DJ, USA talent such as Vic or Christopher Lawrence or countless others.... every third Saturday have another house DJ, and every fourth Saturday have another trance DJ, but KEEP THESE SAME DJs EVERY MONTH, and switch up the opening and closing acts with local talent.... therefore, on Fridays, we're guaranteed top class international talent with Made Events running it.... and Saturdays, we have something to look for, something for both house and trance heads, not to mention featuring local talent every week.... what do u guys think? BATTLE IT OUT!

that sounds like a good formula, I especially like the local talent part. What happens when Spirit brings in someone like AVB on the 2nd or 4th friday of the month? Back to back trance nights??? oh shiiiiiiiiit

the days of twilo where you could catch Carl Cox for $15, Josh Wink and Steve Lawler for $20, and Seb for $15. PVD and SnD for under $25 on a bi-monthly residency...geez those were the fukin days of partying!!!!

note to madeevents

please revive the danny howells monthly residencies

kthxbye

this would be MY ultimate residency lineup for SPIRIT Saturdays (keeping in mind that Made would probably bring the already BIG international talent on Fridays, such as AvB, Tiesto, PvD, etc.)....

1st SATURDAY - Donald Glaude vs. Danny Tenaglia - local opening and closing house/progressive DJs
2nd SATURDAY - Marco V vs. Marcel Woods - local opening and closing tech/techtrance DJs
3rd SATURDAY - Steve Lawler vs. Oscar G - local opening and closing house/tech/tribal DJs
4th SATURDAY - M.I.K.E. vs. Johan Gielen - local opening trance DJs

...yea i know its a pretty random residency list, and 2 or 3 of those DJs wouldnt be available even once a month, but i think its about time we see some new acts that havent been showcased in this city as much as they could have been (except Danny Tenaglia, considering hes run this city)..

..also, i'd like to see more DJs that havent yet exploded in America, or at least in the clubs in America, for example (another random list)....

Yoji Biomehanika
Scott Bond
Steve Murano
DJ Luna & Lady Dana
Randy Katana
Ron van den Beuken

...i thought having Blank and Jones at Avalon was a great refreshing change from the usual guests they have there, stuff like that is what NYC should do, just to give a little variation, and exposing clubbers to different styles of edm.

i, for one, think a Marco V vs. Marcel Woods night would be incredible and a really different music experience that NYC doesnt have theyre two of the most interesting and groundbreaking electronic producers in my opinion, not THE most, but definitely up there, especially in the past 2 years

+1

These two on the same night, in the same venue would definitely bring down the house. Sam Sharp would be just as good of a substitute for Marcel Woods. Either way, this would be one hell of a night.

That is an absolute fantastic idea, wish more clubs would follow it. That being said, with all the importation of big name european talent, there isn't enough being done for the local inexperienced dj who is looking for a chance to spin and build a following. Perhaps a party on a thursday or a sunday when there could be an open house sort of, for a 1 or 2 hour set for newcomers? What do you guys think? Either way we need to get more of M.I.K.E. in N.Y.C.

I think that this sounds like a good idea right now, but one year down the line people will be fed up with hearing the same DJs over and over, and the club would slowly but surely lose business. One residency a month would be more fruitful IMO, as it still leaves three other saturdays open for experimentation. Maybe it's just me, though?

Posted by DJ Eco on Mar-02-2005 15:51:

no, u do have a point, actually.... maybe a bi monthly type thing is better, with 2 saturdays a month open for NYC talent
