[Mixed in Key] March 2005 House Music live from Washington D.C.
Hey all,
DJ Yakov V here... For old school TA's, you might remember me as the person who is obssessed with mixing in key
I just put together a new promo CD for you guys which is available from the link below. The server should be pretty fast (the host has an OC-3 line), so grab it and tell me what you think. It has a pretty complicated chord progression, with several changes between relative minor and relative major keys. I just discovered that Roger Sanchez mixes in key too! I am glad that I am not the only House DJ who does that -- it seems that mixing in key is limited mostly to Progressive House people.
This promo features tracks from 2020Soundsystem, Angel Alanis, Jason Sparks, Mark Martini, Moonbootica, Mylo, Nathan G, Patrick Buck, Slam, Sexe Sur La Plage, Twisted Funk and many more.
Download it here (1 File, 75 Mb, 192-Kbit MP3)
Any feedback is appreciated
Cheers,
DJ Yakov

Looking forward to hearing it though
Hehe
I played 220 club gigs in 2003, so I am slowly moving out of the Amateur ranking... but fair enough, I guess it belongs in either forum. Let me know what you think about the mix
Woo, Mylo - In My Arms
I don't have to listen to this mix all the way through, it gets the thumbs up from me just because of this!
Hey Yakov...how hard is it to mix in key? How long do you spend selecting tracks for your mixes?
Mixing in key becomes easier with practice. I was having problems beatmatching at first, since tracks sound so similar you can't distinguish between them. It is hard to figure out which one is playing faster or slower so you can adjust it.
It took about 3 years of practice to get completely used to it.
but what about finding the right key for a song?
I mean...could you do that live or only for recorded mixes?
HOLY SHIT !!! THIS MIX IS FUCKIN AMAZING !!!
I mean its flawless.
And the music!!! I loved every minute of it. INSANE. I never heard something so housey and techy and different AND that makes you want to dance !!!
This is awesome. Just beautiful.
Thank you so much for this mix. I forwarded it on to a few friends too.
Best mix I heard in 2005 hands down!
10/10

P.S.
Can you post a tracklist. Thanks again.

thanks! i'm always looking for new mixes

woooooooooo
Absolutely great set
Could you post the tracklist cause there are a few tracks I don't know and I want to buy them asap
Hey guys,
Thanks for your kind words. I have always thought that people on TranceAddict were open minded when it comes to other genres of music. I actually became a DJ in 2001 after reading this forum because I wanted to make people dance and have a good time. I feel that sometimes we just need to release -- we all have day jobs or school and occasionally we need to go out and have fun.
On a related note: I just played at a HUGE house party last night. I played a five hour set that felt better than ANY club gig I've had recently. Something about house parties just rocks -- I could play whatever I wanted to play and people would dance to it
Some highlights:
"Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (Pete Heller remix)"
"Disco Citizens - Footprint"
"Sasha - Xpander"
"Studio B - Girls (Tom Neville remix)"
"Def Leppard - Photograph" mixed over the bassline of "Seven Nation Army"
My BPM ranged from 63 BPM to 172 BPM. In the span of one night, I played House, Progressive House, Tech House, Trance, Techno, Breaks, Reggae, Drum and Bass and even Hip Hop. In a real club, I would probably not be able to pull that off
Anyways, I just wanted to say, thanks again for the support. If you like my music, please visit www.djyakov.com and register your e-mail. I try to take care of my friends as much as possible, with free CD giveaways, guest list invites to clubs in Washington, D.C. and much more.
Also, I will post the tracklisting as soon as I get home
Great set man, nice mixing!

My mix into Xpander went like this:
1. Cosmos - Take Me With You (G minor)
2. Sasha - Xpander (G minor)
3. Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar (Pete Heller remix) (D minor)
It was right at the end of the night. I actually stopped the music once at that point, but they made me keep playing.
Fun night
Plus I just picked up a new residency last night too, woho!
Hi!
Nice to see someone who cares about key mixing as much as I do! And I would say that I don't know a lot of house Djs who do! In fact I don't know many Djs (whatever their style is) who care! e.g : Tisto just fxxxcks it, often the same with Corsten, but luckily guys like Oakenfold and sasha usualy pay attention to the key, at least in their mix CD's. But a guy who really does it well is Dave Seaman! For me it's really what makes that a mix is unique, and isn't another compilation. So I'm downloading your mix now (although house is not that much my cup of tea) and I'll give you my review ASAP.
Regards, Corentin.
Any more feedback guys? What's the standout tune in this mix?
By the way, here is the cuesheet:

every house set should start with the chase,
awesome mix man, wow, i wish i can do this but its such a pain in the ass i think to find the key of each track u have, i mean it takes me like 3-4 mins to do it each song times that by what 2000 tracks i have, its just way too time consuming. what i think each label should do when they rls a record or cd or digital download is tell us the key of the track and bpm to save time. that would make things much easier imho and more realistic. but damn this mix is fantastic, great job
