try zone alarm...that's not too bad....

Posted by eRRaTiK on Mar-04-2005 01:26:

lol.

norton is the devil. bloated pos that eats up resources.

had nav running and it detected no viruses but i noticed system performance dropping so i uninstalled the crap and installed AVG a freeware antivirus program, and it detectd 16 traces of a virus that is now going nuts on my pc. i'll need to reformat.

norton firewall is alright, but again i'm against norton software.

there are freeware firewall software available that is heaps better than the norton and others on the market. just wondering if any of you guys have used any of them or know of any.

don't have sp2 and xp firewall is limited in terms of configuration.

the bit torrent client was free too dave

thanks chris. i remember reading about zone alarm having issues with certain apps. i'll check it out.

dude.. are you sure you even need a firewall? are you running behind an adsl router or something of that nature? they usually block most of the ports so much so that you have to free them up manually anyway.. thats why i dont run any firewall personally because i've just switched on which ports i need exclusively

Posted by eRRaTiK on Mar-04-2005 03:03:

yeh i'm using a belkin wireless router atm however a lot of the sh** comes through the standard http ports. websites with activeX scripts and whatnot.

combating spyware is a bitch. things popping up here and there randomly. damn annoying.

my pc isn't half as bad as my dad's a few months ago. he had about 128 instances of spyware on his machine and it all began with a single click on a popup window.

Like Dave said, if your ADSL modem is a router, then it has an in-built firewall, in which case using a software firewall will actually create issues in some cases. At work at the moment, have a link to a sight all about PC security and differnt free apps, will post when I get home

What you're mentioning has nothing to do with a firewall....

Posted by imabug on Mar-04-2005 03:10:

sygate is ok too...

Posted by eRRaTiK on Mar-04-2005 03:14:

you are right. however, without firewall i'm getting intrusions from other pcs.

i know because when i had norton firewall running it recorded multiple attacks from various ips on a daily basis.

i'm just trying to lock the fkn bitch up hard

i'm on bpa gayble, not gaydsl.

and it does have a built in firewall. i just don't trust it.

When it comes to popups and spyware
change browser - maxthon (IE based) or firefox, or something else

for firewall
i say Kerio 2.1.5 personal firewall > *
old but awesome

shhh let him block port 80 everyone will be better off.

Posted by misstrance on Mar-04-2005 04:22:

Anth, a firewall isn't going to help u with that. i've got some decent programs at home u could use, cant remember the names now but pm me if u want the details.

i've got a wireless router so i mainly just use the firewall on that to block out attacks and configure it to work with bittorrent etc. u should ask james for advice, hes pretty clued up with this stuff

yeh i know the firewall won't stop spyware. the firewall is for the intrusions. my bad for not clarifying it in the original post.

it's all good. james' knowledge is scary lol.

Get yourself a decent spyware cleaner like Spybot - Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware (or both).

Zonealarm's a pretty good firewall, still bloatware though but easier to use than most other free firewalls.

Posted by Philby on Mar-05-2005 08:25:

we have sygate personal firewall, im not sure if it fullfils your requirements but thats what my dad uses.

Posted by djway on Mar-05-2005 09:59:

If you want a dedicated firewall run something like Kerio on it's own machine.

If you want something running on your machine sygate and or zonealarm are both decent for end users.

Kerio is as close as it gets to a hardware firewall on windows.

Smoothwall is the best, for dedicated but it's on Linux.

erratik: get sygate personal firewall, its easy, free and you wont have problems (unless u create them). you can simply choose to accept or deny anyhting that comes in, then set a precedent (ie, porno.com you block once or twice then set it as always block, very useful)

pink: how is the webcam set up? ie is it their webcam and you want to use it, or did u bring ur own into uni? if its theirs then ask the techstaff, if its urs, grab ur local computer geek, flirt with him a bit, and then he'll sort it out for you (i bet he will)
