get 2 of the same songs and try beat-matching that first, always helped me allot. then work on the lows mids and highs after u get beat-matching down.

Of course get advice from people around here that spin vinyl, but you should see about ordering this book also. It's called "How To DJ Right ,The art and science of playing records". It helped me out alot. I'd give ya advice on vinyl, but I spin cds, so I can't really talk about something I know nothing about. I can beatmatch in the drop of a dime and mix pretty good, but I never messed with vinyl.
Good luck!

Rock On,

Mike

By the way, beatmatching does not take ages to master. It depends on the person and how much you practice. I know 17 year olds that can beatmatch better than me, and I'm 26.

I thought www.recess.co.uk has a good guide to start with.

Posted by Psionic on Mar-04-2005 12:57:

I'd go with TranceSpeeder's advice. Use two vinyls that are the same tune and have a very recognizable bassline that starts early in the track. That way you don't need to worry about the other elements of the track interfering so much with the bassline.

He said it takes ages to MASTER it not it takes ages to be better than you at it. Most DJs haven't mastered beatmtching and that is OK because it takes a long ass time. If you have a shaky mix every now and again and you can't ride the pitch perfectly without touching your vinyl except to cue it then you haven't mastered beatmatching.

Posted by Vyper0987 on Mar-04-2005 18:51:

what type of music do u want to spin?

i spin trance and progressive, but when i was learning to beatmatch, i just bought some record package two of the same vinyls. the records had some pretty distinct basslines in it, and the tracks were only like 125-130 bpm. slower records made it easier at first.

as for a bpm counter, you don't need one. you just need to practice A LOT so that you can do it by ear. it's going to be very frustrating at first, but with time, it won't be too difficult.

and there's a knob on the back of the tone arm that will help with that needle jumping.

Posted by Exodus17 on Mar-04-2005 18:54:

1.when you touch the record, be gentile with it, dont jerk it around, try moving the record back and fourth with just your fingertips rather than half your arm
2.remember that there are usually always little changes when you count 8 bass kicks(beats) 4times (32beats)

3.when you try and match two tracks, try and start with the very first beat of the next track rather than just letting them play randomy and matching beats....

use tips 2 and 3 together and if you have them matched well they should both have their little changes at the same times .... quik example here - Bm = bass kick, tss = hi hat

song structure- Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm (8x1)| Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm (8x2)| Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm (8x3)| Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm Bm (8x4)*** (new sound here) Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss Bm tss....

count the beats, the 4th time you get to 8, the next beat usually introduces/cuts out an instrument

this is how beatmatching is possible, match the first beat of your cue track with that "33rd" beat of the playing track (next beat after the 4 8s) and things happen at the same - called phrase matching

oh and btw, do a search on BPM counters here in the DJ booth and you'll find plenty of posts on how much they suck and arent as spiffy as they're advertised to be

I can't stress this enough, this is called phrasing, and if there in phrase it makes it a shitload easier, plus it sounds better, can't really add anything else to the post, but just remember, you DON'T want beatcounters of any kind and just practice LOADS, its easy to learn but dam hard to master like people have said, and Trancespeeders advice on gettin the same 2 records is very good, this way you can also practice syncing and phrasing easier, by puttin them both on quarts lock (makes them beatmatched right away cos there the same record) and then you can practice lining them up from there.

I did alot of practice when starting out using 2 very plain techno records that are about 8 minutes long each and sound similar, I still pull them out now and then to screw around with them, ahhh the good ol days.

I see what your saying Zild. Thanks for clearing that up.

When I still had my crappy deck to mix on I used Envy - Falling for practice, didn't use 2 copies, but it has a clear bassdrum so I found it quite easy with that to mix it into other stuff.

it sounds as if your needles aren't weighted properly...there should have been instructions with your cartridges on how to weight the needles

just an observation - you dont really NEED 2 of the same track to learn to beatmatch... especially if its your first couple of records....

id suggest (if you can) go to your record store, flip through some tracks and have a listen to any that catch your eye...

if you're just trying to learn to beatmatch your main goal is to practice getting 2 tracks to play in time with eachother which for all purposes is making sure the kicks play at the same time... if youre on somewhat of a budget when you go out to buy tracks spend the $ on multiple diff tracks rather than 2 copies of the same track... once you get beatmatching down youre left with an extra record taking up space in your bag... IMO id rather go and buy 2 diff tunes, that way when you make ur next purchace, you have 2 tunes you know well rather than 1

of course if you can afford it, by all means go for it, my opinions are based on the fact that im poor and for me lunch money = new records... need a job
