4 mounties killed in pot raid

Pot raids continue during tragedy
$1.5M in marijauna seized day four Mounties slain

Martin Derbyshire, Staff Writer - More from this author

As news of four RCMP officers shot and killed during a drug raid in Alberta came across the wire, York Regional Police were conducting a series of marijuana grow operation raids across the region.

Four sophisticated pot grow houses in Queensville, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and Markham were raided Thursday.

York police found more than 1,500 plants with an estimated street value of $1.5 million, in the four raids and arrested five people.

Local officers have raided 18 grow ops so far this year.

Last year, York police busted 132 illegal drug operations and Det.-Sgt. Karen Noakes said this serious problem is not going away.

"Not at all. The growers are adapting to the different things we do and then we have to adapt again."

With marijuana grow operations being such a huge problem in York Region, the news of four Mounties being murdered in a similar situation hit close to home.

Local cops offered condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the Mounties who were shot and killed after being led to a farm in the tiny hamlet of Rochfort Bridge, AB to investigate stolen property and a marijuana grow lab.

All four were shot inside a shed on the property while staking out the farm.

A fifth man, the farm's owner, was also found dead, apparently turning the gun on himself after shooting the four officers.

Police Chief Armand La Barge -- in Israel this week as a part of a six-day mission on anti-terrorism strategies with other police leaders from across Ontario -- took part in a moment of silence at the Canadian Embassy in Tel Aviv Friday morning in honour of the slain officers.

Det.-Sgt. Noakes did not want to comment on the safety and security of officers involved in local drug raids and the force did

not use the RCMP officers' deaths as an opportunity to reiterate its call for tougher sentences on marijuana growers.

"Today is a day to reflect on the dedication of these (RCMP) officers, and all officers, who put their lives on the line every day," said acting Chief Eric Jolliffe.

Newmarket-Aurora MP Belinda Stronach offered her condolences to the families and agreed with the force's position.

"When law enforcement officers fall in the line of duty, it is a national tragedy that affects us all. These are men and women who are willing to put their own lives at risk every day to make our lives safer," she said, adding now is the time to pay respect to the fallen officers, their families and the police services, not for a discussion of the danger posed by marijuana grow ops.

She did promise, however, to return to that issue soon.

Ms Stronach may get that chance sooner than later as a bill is before the House of Commons to make pot possession punishable be a fine but set mandatory sentences for growers.

The four books of condolence are on display at the Newmarket chapel of Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Dr., for two weeks and the public is encouraged to offer sympathies. The home is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. The books will then be sent to Alberta for the victims' families.

I dont think this would happened if marijuana was decriminalized or legal. Such a tragedy. Unfortunatly this will probably cause them to crack down on grow ops even harder than they are, wasting more tax dollars and risking more lives..... condolances go to there families.

thoughts??

all these useless deaths over something as harmless of G-R-A-S-S?!

...the next thing Canada should be looking into is 'anti-pot growing defense shields'!

i detect inevitable Liberal Party blame due to emerge in this thread..

Posted by Carney on Mar-05-2005 23:13:

i think their deaths had nothing to do with weed
there deaths are to blame on our peice of shit justice system,,, they should have made an effort to rehablitate this guy a long asss time ago...
plus it really even a grow op id say, only had 20 plants growing
the media should focus more on how this guy walked free on previous shoootings instead of a couple weed plants

What a senseless tragedy.

I can't comprehend why so much energy is put on this and things like illegal weapon sales or mob/crime control are completely ignored.

Posted by Jayx1 on Mar-06-2005 00:04:

No question that Liberal policies have helped contribute to this.

By being light on crime and hard on drugs they are completely twisting what their priorities should be. Not to mention that this is proof that their $1 Billion plus gun registry does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but waste money.

The Liberals have had 13 years in which to change laws and toughen against crime and they have pretty well done nothing. In fact id argue that they have made the problem worse.

And decriminalization is not the way to go. That will just make life easier for the mobsters that grow the stuff. Its time to fully legalize and tax the sale of marijuana.

For WEED? I feel bad, but jeez, was it worth it?

Posted by TheNeonAlien on Mar-06-2005 00:11:

Does anyone find it wierd that one guy was able to kill 4 (trained) police officers, with a rifle!

it was very sad day.

weed will not be legalized now. The lives of those officers were worth more then nothing.

Posted by tomeboy on Mar-06-2005 00:21:

Im gonna guess and say if this gun registry thing was valid, they would have known he had a gun, yet another waste of tax dollars.

i lived in Israel for 8 years, the place where the smallest amount you can buy is 25 grams and cost just 20 bucks. police got the right to stop you on the street, get you naked and then send you for a drug tests.

however if they find more then 5 grams on you ,you can be sentenced up to 3 years - and they actually do send people to jail for that amount of pot.
thats what i call hard time for pot smokers.

back to 4 police officers killed on the farm.
how can a farmer shoot 4 officers with bullet proof vests together? it takes some time to reload the shotgun, and to aim it at the person . are they were trained well? too many things look weird in all this situation to be true... are they were there on a real pot raid ?

My sources say:

Although this is very unfortunate and a horrible thing to happen - there is more information to come from this. We are not hearing the complete truth.

I wouldn't recommend that lol, no need to be violent here

It's sad that four officers had to die, means four families scarred

Jay...get over yourself. The same thing happened when the tories were in. Actually it was even worse then, so....let it go already with the blaming game...it's getting really old.

Besides...when busts go this bad...almost always there's dirty cops involved.

Oh fucking come on now. Seriously. That's the most ignorant thing I've ever read in my life.

Unhappy

Very sad to see this sort of thing happen

From what I've heard/read...It seems that this guy's place was raided by some sort of RCMP drug team. They didn't find the "owner" and left leaving 2 RCMP to guard the place.Well the guy came back & shot the 2 dead. The RCMP sent 2 more later to check on them because they didn't respond on their radios & the guy killed THEM as well.I guess the first 2 cops didn't have time to call in "shots fired" so thats why the RCMP didn't send it the cavalry the first time.

Apparently this guy had a looong history with the cops.Obviously the gun registry wouldn't have stopped this guy from getting a gun.THe problem is VERY lame sentences for gun felonies and that illegal guns are finding their way here via the U.S.

ANyway....I can see a long drawn out inquiry coming out of this by the families of the dead RCMP officers.

so sad...

bad things will happen in this world though..even if Pot does become legal.

Dude...1st of all that link doesn't work & 2nd...These RCMP officers had families and one or two of them had wifes that we're expecting another kid and basically starting out in new detachments...Would you repeat that quote of yours to the faces of the families?

gah... I can't click anything without reading anti-government bs...

Posted by Goashem on Mar-06-2005 03:39:

whats this nonesense about "this wouldnt happen if marijuana was legal" ? if its not marijuana its extasy if its not extasy its coke. scumbags will always be scumbags, hes a lazy bum looking for an easy way of making money. if the shit was legal he would have looked for another criminal way to get his money. weed is not the killing factor.
