PROFANE VANITY PLATES ARE SLIPPING BY CENSORS

By BRODIE FENLON, TORONTO SUN

No, it's not that

HLY CRP! Seems there's a whole lot of profanity in Ontario vanity. Drivers in this province have managed to get approved dozens of "offensive" terms on their vanity licence plates despite the best efforts of government censors.

But the public is eagle-eyed and more than willing to squeal, according to complaints filed with the ministry of transportation and obtained by the Sunday Sun under freedom of information legislation.

From Italian slang for male private parts to degrading Japanese sex acts, personalized licence plates have been the subject of 54 public complaints since 2000. Not bad, considering the ministry issued 136,000 vanity plates and rejected 2,755 in that same period.

Yet some slip by the government's eight-person committee that meets weekly to review plates and reject those deemed derogatory, profane, racist, sexual, religious, drug related, criminal or otherwise objectionable. When the committee fails, the public picks up the slack:

* S2 CATZ: "Any person knowing the Italian language will be able to tell you that it has something to do with the male anatomy," a "concerned taxpayer" wrote the ministry. "I had my 3-year-old daughter and her older friend in the car and, since her friend was able to read it, my daughter kept repeating it all the way home and thought it was funny."

* FKGM: "I happen to work for a division of GM and this makes the nature of the message particularly galling," a complainant wrote.

* UDRV2SLO: "Yesterday morning on Hwy. 401 in Toronto I was passed in a heavy rainstorm by a white Hyundai Tiberon bearing the plate UDRV2SLO (you drive too slow) driving way over the posted 100 km/h speed limit."

* RD RAGE: "If this man cut me off in traffic or committed another aggressive move, seeing this plate ahead of me would in fact create me to be more enraged," a complainant wrote last year. "Road Rage is serious -- Next will we allow 'OOZIE,' 'MGNM57,' God forbid 'DRNK DRVR' "?

* BUKAKE: "... is a term for a degrading sexual act and probably should not be allowed."

* GETSMWET: "Evidently a piece of sexual innuendo -- thought up by a rather adolescent mind -- that is very disturbing to read, especially while driving with mother, daughter or wife in the car."

A Toronto cop took umbrage at a plate with the letters MY RS. Painted above the plate was the word KISS.

Even Jesus isn't safe: "The overtly Christian proclamation of 'JSISLORD' on an Ontario issued licence plate is inappropriate."

An observant historian complained about 1SS LAH, which the writer said referred to an elite Nazi German SS division that acted as Adolf Hitler's personal body guard.

HIJACKER, JIHAD, AK 47, offensive Yiddish slang, and the name of a Croatian fascist movement have also warranted complaints.

The ministry's review committee uses a database, Internet searches, slang dictionaries and consults multicultural associations and universities to uncover naughty plates.

To complain about a plate, call 1-800-387-3445 or in Toronto, 416-235-2999.

IN THE mid-1980s, Evan Glazer, 38, of Toronto was the drummer in a rock band called Menagerie In 3D. Hence his vanity plate MENAJ 3, one of the first to be issued in the province. At the time, Glazer had to defend his choice by providing the government with a letter of explanation and tickets from his band's show.

Eighteen years later, a member of the public has complained: "I immediately translated this into menage a trois. A well known French phrase," wrote the complainant, who offered the ministry of transportation a Collins English Dictionary definition of "a sexual arrangement involving a married couple and the lover of one of them."

Glazer laughed at the complaint, noting the public's response is usually one of hot-blooded support. "You get everybody whistling and clapping on the streetly when my wife drives."

LMAO... those are hilarious!

But I do agree... these should be kept off the roads. Nobody wants to be driving around and read that kinda crap.

Either way i think people who complain about this shit instead of just shaking their head at it or (god forbid) laughing at it need to seriously check themselves.

AS IF ppl are bitching about this! OMG!

Calm the fuck down "taxpayers"... jesus christ... its NOT that big of a deal...

i cant imagine myself ever being offended by these licence plates. ppl are acting far too oversensitive iMO. holy crap this is riddiculous.

what's next? complaining about people's last names? or just full names?
so i guess in a few months they're going to ban first names like "Dick" or last ones like shaft!!!

lol those are funny!

but yeah kinda sad that there are actually people who called in and complained about them...

OMG- I remember seeing that plate "MENAJ 3" just a week or 2 ago, and even commented on it to Graham later, how I thought it was so funny.

Someone tell me what is 'offensive' about TAXSLAVE?

I say, for the $213 they charge you here for a personalized plate, it should say whatever u want (aside from obvious profanity).

Apparently the word "slave" now has racial overtones.

Personally, I don't find any of them offensive, although there are a few that I wouldn't want my young kids to see (they will see 'em eventually, but still).
