Dreadful Drop
A man apparently intent on punishing his estranged wife jumped off of the Don Mills bridge onto the busy westbound lanes of Highway 401 holding his five-year-old daughter Sunday night.
The father, said to be in his late 30s, left a suicide note and repeatedly called his spouse threatening to kill himself and their young child.
To the horrified eyes of those watching on the busy highway, he attempted to follow through on his warnings.
But miraculously, the little girl survived. She was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children and is in guarded condition. She was talking when she arrived and officials said she had suffered internal bleeding, but doctors managed to stop it.
And amazingly, no cars hit the child, or her father, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and the little girl somehow didn't suffer any broken bones.
Police were aware of the mans terrible intentions but weren't able to reach him in time. Insp. Brian OConnor described the suspect as a loaded missile and said he had a history of mental health issues.
He was going to kill himself and take his daughter to punish his wife for whatever he thought she had done wrong in the relationship, he said.
The numerous threatening phone calls the man made to his estranged spouse could be considered a form of psychological torture, OConnor said. The woman called police around 4:30pm Sunday to let them know about her husband's terrible plan and investigators desperately tried to find him.
Officers at that time tried to use some methods to track down the location the cell phone was being used from, he said.
Then, at around 5:45pm, a citizen called police to tell them she saw a man on a cell phone holding a girl on the Don Mills bridge.
Officers responded and arrived at the scene, but he pushed his daughter over the edge, then jumped from the bridge before they could reach him.
The officers ran down to the highway to stop traffic.
Several other people, including some drivers, saw the disturbed father hold his child out over the busy highway.
Daren Deonarine was on his way back to London as he watched the drama unfold. He immediately pulled over and tried to offer aid for the young victim.
"We saw that her eyes were open, she was breathing," he recalled. "So I got my kids' blanket and covered the child. She wanted to say something but I never really got any words out of her ... How that kid survived is beyond me."
OConnor said the family was split but the man did have legal access to the child and did have her for the day Sunday. Right now, authorities don't believe this was an abduction.
So far, authorities havent released any names, but Deonarine is sure there was a guardian angel watching over the youngster. "If she made it and this adult didn't make it," he remarked, "it can only be a miracle."

I was driving westbound on 401 a few mins this happened. At first I found it very strange that traffic was backed up at Kennedy ... then I saw the express lane closed. After travelling to the Don Mills bridge, I had a feeling some crazy shit was going on. Never saw so many cops on the highway, on the bridge and etc. It's sad to hear shit like this happening.
I just saw this on BT. Thats just crazy. I'm glad the girl is alive.
read this on the Star.. so sad ..
I saw this story before I left for work last night. I find it so frusterating that someone would be so flippant about their life and the life of their child, when I've lost two friends in the past 4 months to dreadful diseases, and watched them fight for theirs.
I know depression is rampant, and this has been a cold, hard winter, but it's still heartbreaking.
Just heard about this on the radio. How that kid survived is beyond me. I guess it just wasn't her time to go. The radio DJ said the world is a better place without this guy around and I agree.
Guh. I can see that bridge from my work. It makes me feel so ill.
Un-fucking-believable!
My heart goes out to the little girl who survived and to the mother. I cant imagine whut shes goinmg thru, knowing her daughter was almost delibertly killed (by her husband no less) OMG
I hope the the girl can come out of this w/o any permenant physical or psychological damage
very sads indeed that it came to this.
Fuckin aweful...I'm happy that the kid will be ok...I guess the next bridge to get suicide barriers is the Don Mills one now

| Originally posted by drgoodvibe it is definitely sad. But just imagine a place like Japan, where suicide has become so prevalent that they actually have to go to great lengths making policies to curb it specifically. |
This is horrible newz
Does anyone else notice that there is a lot of violent crimes happening this year then any other before?? Every single night I wathc the news and there is always something happening in Ontario!
this is screwed up!
...also yesterday in the early early AM did anyone hear about a complete stranger went up to someone's house and said I no longer want to live and shoots himself in front of the houseowner? Well the houseowner was all shocken up - well Duh - who wouldn't be - but who should open their door to strangers anyways??
I realize that things are worse in other parts of the world, but Canada, (Ontario especially) is becoming quite the violent area to live in!
PLUR

The idea that you shoudlnt open up your door to strangers (as an adult) seems riddiculous. That you should even worry about hte consequences of such an action seems crazy. But its the environment that breeds that kinda of attitude out of necessity i guess. here, theres a stranger at the door, dont know who it is ? Well, why the heck woudlnt u open the door and see whut they want.. but here there is 99.99% certainity that nothing negative will come about from opening your door. Maybe their Witnesses, maybe its someone my parents know (but who i dont) or maybe its a friend of my brother (who i dont know)... just commenting that thinking of not opening ur door to a stranger (unless something very obviously appears amiss) would be a very strange idea to hold up here. but thats up here, eh. its too bad its not the same down there! of course i can totally see why tho!!! |

| Originally posted by dallastar I would say Collingwood is a hell of a lot different with what could come about opening the door for a stranger. There have been plenty of crazy -ass stories coem out of Toronto about strangers knocking on peoples doors, and being raped or even murdered. I used to not worry at all about walking home at night - but as time has gone by, living in Toronto I am sometime scared to walk downt he street. There are some bloody idiots in this world and I think a lot of the reside in Toronto! lol, well some of them at least. In the past week, there has been 4 RCMP officer's murdered, a suicide attempt (1 succeeded, 2 lived) a stranger walks up to a strangers house and murders himself infront of the home owner. . . .the list could continue, but this is one reaosn why I refuse to watch the night time news, it is all too depressing! on a side note, I went by the Queen Park Government buildings today, on my way to work, and I noticed that the Canadian & Ontario Flag were half way down - could this be becasue of the RCMP officers being murdered over a weeeeeee bit of weeeed?? |
horrible that thats teh way it is Dallas! just horrible!
Toronto has some really strange things happening. It's starting to be like Chicago/NYC, where multiple unexplained actions happen a day
It's trully a miracle that the little girl has survived.
