Xbox 2/Xenon specs revealed

Click

Heh, Nintendo's Revolution better actually be a revolution cause if they honestly think that people don't care about performance then they got another thing comin.

"Camera - Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. It's unknown if the Xenon camera will allow for EyeToy-like gameplay. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver."

Surprised me as well as the reviewer.

Interesting idea, actually.

Personally, I think there's no way this item won't be OVER $300. It's got such immense power...

They're gonna sell it for $299...thats the mass market price nowadays it seems. Both the PS2 and XBox launched with those price figures...expect the same for the next consoles...with Nintendo skimping out as usual.

Hope so. The companies are really pushing it considering they need more and MORE console sales each time before they make any profit.

I'm getting the feeling that we're approaching a point where game consoles will hit the $350-$400 mark.

eventually u might aswell just make ur own pc's there much better and wont cost that much more to build

Always been loyal to Playstation and previously Sega so PS3 for me, although Yan is right the prices are going up too much and too fast. The ESPN franchise I think noticed this and has droped its prices to 19.99, if you think of how many people by these and how much it costs to make them they should all be 19.99 and the systems should be 1/2 or 3/4s the price!

not true. all the console companies make money from the sale of games, not the console themselves. its in their interest to keep console prices down so that more people buy them, and they can sell more games.

i mean, how many 12yo's can afford expensive consoles, eh? hahaha.

I'm thinking you didn't fully understand what I meant. Video game companies make money BOTH off of console sales as well as of software sales. Forgot to mention that, I guess.

I don't know about you but the price of 4 new games (not counting sports since they're much cheaper now) rounds out somewhere at around $200. That's a console right there. If that were the case then kids would be playing 1 to 2 games a year, MAX, according to the logic that they can't afford the consoles.

haha, just ignore my comments re the kids. was just trying to stir up you console fans

yeah, they make money off the consoles, but its not much. and as time progresses, they make less and less. the money is in flogging as many units to as many people, then making the profits with the games. whilst games are expensive to make, once theyre made, it costs them fvck all to mass produce the fvckers.

by the time the PS1 had asserted its dominance on the market, their units were selling for fvck all. i know a store i worked in made about $4AU of each unit, and (apparently) sony's profit wasnt that much more.

its in the games fellas.

True that!

Also, important to note is that the companies set quota for their consoles that they must reach otherwise they'd consider it a "Dreamcast" (pun only the video game fans'd get). Poor Sega. We hardly knew ye.

hahaha. poor sega. tho i got much love from my master system and mega drive before i bought a PC. also owned a saturn, coz they were super cheap pretty quickly!

i just like PCs, coz if theres a really good game, chances are it'll hit the PC. and look prettier

I'm really impressed that xbox next is fully implementing 720P hd-tv format. Very few consumers have this type of quality on their tv- but for those who do (including me, quite soon) this should be amazing. I think all in all- Microsoft is here to stay in the gaming market.

However, their choice to use Dual-Layer DVD's over BD-ROMs or HD-DVDs might not be their wisest.

True- but let's face it- the xbox is going to expensive enough as it is. Deciding to add a new format like HD-DVD or Blu-ray is going to put the price over the top. Perhaps, later in the future they can release a second version of xbox when prices for those kind of drives go down. I'm not sure if this will neccessarily effect the quality of the game either. Games like HL2 or Doom3 had some really impressive graphics but did not have more than 3-4 cds.

Let's not forget that Sony provided a very low-priced DVD player fix for the world (BUNDLED with a game system) for a VERY affordable price. PS3 is BD-ROM...

TAKEN FROM IGN:

NOTE: I bolded the things that surprised me.

CPU: Xenon's central processing unit (CPU) has three 3.0 GHz PowerPC cores. Each is capable of at least two instructions per cycle and has an L1 cache with 32 KB for data and 32 KB for instructions. The three cores share 1 MB of L2 cache. Alpha 2 developer kits currently have two cores instead of three.

GPU: Xenon's GPU, codenamed Fudo, is a generation beyond the ATI X800, and designed at ATI's Marlborough, Massachusetts office. Its clock speed is 500 MHz and it supports Shader 3.0. Developers are currently working with an alpha 2 GPU. Beta GPU units are expected by May and the final GPU is slated for a summer release. In game terms, the final GPU will be more powerful than anything on the market today. It's compatible with DirectX 9's PS and VS 3.0. It's also compatible with the next version of DirectX (DX10).

System Memory: Xenon will have 256 MB of system RAM. This number should not be equated to typical PC RAM. PCs are multiprocessing machines, not just game machines, thus this number is more than sufficient for a dedicated console like Xenon. The Xbox has 64 MB of system RAM and is a very capable machine.

Optical Drive: Xenon will not use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Xenon videogames will appear on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB. The DVD drive is scheduled to run at 12X.

Memory Units: Xenon will use 64 MB to 1,024 MB memory cards. A total of 8 MB is reserved for system use, leaving a 56 MB to 1,016 MB for user data.

Hard Drive: Xenon's hard drive is optional. It's not built in like the current Xbox. A total of 2 GB of the drive will be used as game cache. The final drive size is still being determined. The Hard Drive will be a 2.5" form factor and sold separately. Microsoft's current plan is to require you to buy the hard drive to enable backward compatibility with current Xbox games. This way, Microsoft recovers the cost of its hard drive, plus it is most likely to give hard drive buyers Xbox Live subscriptions.

Camera: Xenon will have a USB 2.0 camera. It's capable of 1.2 megapixel still shots and VGA video. Photos can be used in-game and for gamer profiles. The camera can also be used for video chat. Developers are currently using a simulated camera driver.

Sound Chip: Xenon does not have an audio chip in the traditional sense. Decompression is handled by hardware, while the rest of the chores are handled by software. DirectSound3D has been dropped in favor of X3DAudio. The former was deemed too inflexible.

Wireless Options: Xenon will enable both wired and wireless controllers (like the Nintendo WaveBird or the Logitech controllers), and will come with RF receivers for wireless options. The system also supports an optional Internet router/adapter.

Controllers: The new controllers will be around the same size as the current S-controllers. Microsoft has eschewed the dual triggers for shoulder buttons, and the design is said to be a mixture between the current S-controllers and the current PS2 controllers. They will not feature slots for memory cards, which, we're told, are on the console itself. The system supports 64 megabyte memory cards. There are three controller slots, two controllers on front of the system, plus one USB on the back. Controllers have 2.5mm jacks for headset use.

Console Design: The Xenon console design is said to be much smaller than Xbox, which seems obvious. The new design is styled less like a Corvette and more organic in shape. Its size falls somewhere between the new slimmer PS Two and original PS2.
