James Zabiela reviews here!!!!

Oh gosh where to start!!! When those lasers came on...that exact moment...somethign just went BANG and the night was just so intense from there till the end of his set!!!!

I was really worried that I wouldnt enjoy the music cuz I get really irritated by scratching and really long breakdowns....but Zabiela just totally got me hooked on his style!!!!

It was hard to dance to at times, but at those times I would just look around at everyone having such a good time and I would start dancing again! At one point he went pretty hard for a while; I loved it!

Its funny how you can distinguish the people thata re there to see Zabiela for his music and those that are there just for the sake of it! Nevertheless, there were tons of beautiful girls and guys wherever you turned!!!

Overall a really super night for the time I stayed. We left soon after Zabiela got off and even exchanged a quick hello. He seems so humble and down to earth!

WOOOOO Zabiela!!!
You got yourself a new fan!!

Yo,

I missed part of his set... me and my friend got there around midnight. Zabiela was on of course...
We took drinks... looked around to find some of you guys...
We took drinks then I found Malek and saw Monika from far..
Then I had to go to the bathroom.... after that I found Jay, his gf, JpX and FunKenLouis "dancing" on the dancefloor
then I went to get my friend...
We took drinks and realized that Elvis had left the building.
so as all the TAs

So We left this Syllicon valley club.

Overall, James music was good to chill at, but it didn't got me into it at all. Somehow, we didn't felt any progression in his set. maybe cause we came in late and missed most of his set...

thanks Monika! I was very worried with the Sasha no show and that all the people would be throwing random objects at me! And after reading on here yesterday how dissapointed everyone was that it was just me playing I wondered if I should bother coming myself! What with comments like 'fuck zabiela ' and 'he's no sasha' etc i read on the other thread.... BUT I'm glad I did! And you guys made me feel very welcome, so thank you!!!!

Charlie, when the club told me there was another DJ coming on at 1 am I had to be respectful and calm the music down before here came on. Had I have been playing last you would've heard something less 'chill'.

JZ

the MAN himself makes an appearance on this forum... Kudos to him!!!

the next time JZ comes to montreal, I will be all over that party for sure.

well... as I said... me and my friend we missed a lot from your set.. we only heard you during your last hour or so...
the music was good... but we found that weird hearing breakbeats and stuff like that at 1am. You then left... so he were like WTF
We thought you would have played till 3 or something...

at one point... when the other Dj was on... we saw you in the booth and we thought that you were gonna play again. not even.

I can't believe that Millenium made you open even if Sasha wasn't there. its none sense.
Here, the party get on fire from 1 to 2:30.. or till 3 when a special Dj is playing.

the sound was good, light show was pretty intense. so many people were there it was awesome

thnx to Wisna for the ride, the bum on st-laurent liked your sushi i heard that Hisham did a tribute to Digweed after the party

it was a good club night but with Sasha on the decks it would have been much stronger

Posted by malek on Mar-09-2005 20:18:

the night was fantastic, it really picked up at around 12, but ended so fast James told me he wanted to go on, but it wasn't his call

Nice lighting, good sound, nice lasers, like a TA told me, it looks alot like the guvernment in Toronto.

It was my first party in some times, and it was really really cool to meet all the TAs once more, fantastic group of people love y'all

LOL there was a time when they were doing contests every weekend... the girls who won received between 1000 and 2000 of breast implants value, or was it general plastic surgery

So after a few months, near all the girls had fake boobies !

Good night, everyone that i wanted was there!

Party started of awsome, danced just until zabiela got off!
Zabiela droped some good stuff, and handled those cdjs with great accuracy . Sasha would've topped it off but no complaints.
I noticed lots of people weren't there for the music though.

ps. yea the bum must've been in heaven

so who played after zabeila and did anyone go to mp3

Posted by babealicious on Mar-09-2005 23:33:

we were disappointed that Sasha cancelled but also wanted to hear Zabiela, so we went.

not impressed at all with the club, the people and the sound system. when we got there, at around 11:30 or so, a group of guys were rushing out of the club screaming and fighting and threw one of those poles that hold the ropes in the entrance, onto the club's windows and broke two of them.

one of my friends didn't end up going and I was trying to sell her ticket in the line-up. every person in the line-up that I talked to and I told them that Sasha had cancelled, asked "Who's Sasha anyway?" (not that they knew who Zabiela was). This is about 5 people, that I talked to... I guess most people that were there weren't there for the music.

JZ's set was great though, for the little time that we got to hear. And was happy to see that people were into it and had their arms up in the air and stuff. I agree that it's pretty poor decision making, to have James open up and whoever that was, to play all night... We left shortly after JZ's last track.
We had a good time though, good Tuesday night out.

Last time I saw him was at ARIA a couple of months ago and was treated to a proper set. Looking forward to another one of those. Surely in Miami.

Sasha holds a special place with me (6 yr history of great music), but James has moved up quickly and is definitely up there on my list of great flow and great DJ'ing all around.

oops...

i posted my review in the wrong thread...so not to be redundant but.... i just need to reiterate the fact that this was TOTALLY worth the drive up from nyc! i brought my friend who isn't even INTO dance music in the least (let me put it this way-- we were listening to interpol all the way up..), and she loved every second of it!

i thought james did an excellent job of warming up the crowd- when i got there around 10:30 (confession: i was actually waiting in the car until exactly 10pm, which is when i thought he'd go on...yes, i was pretty neurotic about catching every minute of jz's set!), he was playing bleepy, atmospheric chilled out beats. no one was really dancing yet, because the place was just opening up and i thought the music had the perfect energy level- it wasn't boring or too dreamy, and it all had a nice techy feel to it. yum

more people were showing up towards midnight and he started laying down the acid/electro tinged tracks that i came out for! it was my first time in montreal and i was impressed with how up for it the crowd was. james built it up with really funky acid shit and slammed in a lot of funky breaks for the end of his set. something i really respect him for is the fact that he does his thing, and it's always a risk to do that, but he loves what he does and it's so apparent in the way he rocks the crowd and has so much energy in the booth. not many djs would throw down new school breaks on a main floor, but he kept it coming and the crowd loved it!

anyway... his mixing was flawless (which is pretty much a given at this point, if ya ask me..) and his style is so original... it definitely leaves me something to aspire towards every time i hear him! the way he uses the hot cues on the cdjs and the fx and of course the scratching..even his EQing and how he switches out the bass or loops a vocal... AHHHH he is so fucking amazing! when i saw him at crobar, i kept switching between dancing my ass off and just listening to what he was doing. that's such a rare thing that he can make you appreciate both...

i only IDed a few tracks... 'get kinky'-plump djs (actually, he IDed that for me afterwards bc it just blew my mind!), a remix of galvanize (where he looped and delayed the vocal sample on the drop while mixing out of it.. brilliant) and a papua new guinea remix. someone told me he dropped his new tune and it was definitely one of the most killer tracks i've ever heard! very electro-y and clean.

even though i would've killed for him to play all night, the 3 hours of him that we got were just phenomenal... it was exactly the inspiration i needed before working on my WMC mixes

catherine

PS thanks james for the nerd talk
