TTC On Strike?

Who else is going to be royally screwed if this happens? I know I will be. Let's hope they reach an agreement ASAP.

Time to privatize and get rid of the union.

i'd be pretty screwed - and I know most of my co-workers would be as well. But i'm sure i'd find a way around it, life wouldnt stop, the world wouldn't come to a sudden end if the TTC stopped for a couple of days.

Agreed!

Right now the TTC ticket-generated revenue covers only 78% (if i remember correctly) of its operating costs. That means taxpayer's money is used to fund the operation of the TTC. I wouldn't mind so much if taxpayer money was used to upgrade infrastructure or the number of vehicles. However, when revenues can't even fund day-to-day operations, something is wrong with the TTC.

I challenge you to find a public transit system anywhere in the world that has its operations self-financed through fares alone.

The US tends to subsidize the operations of their mass transit systems with taxpayer dollars to a higher extent than we do! (One of the principal reasons ours are so lacking in comparison.)

Average TTC employee makes about $25/hour...HELLO!!! YOURE A BUS DRIVER!!!! They wanted money, they got money, they wanted more budget, they got that too....meanwhile services has been getting worse and NOW they want to go on strike?!?! FCUK YOU! why don't you go get some education instead of driving a bus and crying about it

I know of people who graduated from UofT with a degree and working for much less than that and they're crying...cry me a river.

They make me almost as sick as bartenders who bitch about "Cheap tips"

Like i said, privitize and get drivers who earn $15 an hour at most.

Just did a quick comparison between Toronto and New York.

Toronto Fare revenues: $730M (76%)
city contribution: $227M (24%)
total expenditure: $957M

NYC Fare revenues: $3,619M (43%)
gov't contributions: $2,647M (32%)
other revenue: $1,552M (18%)
total expenditure: $8,383M

...so the public contribution is quite higher in NYC.

But that has nothing to do with the union and employee salaries...try doing comparison how much NYC public transit workers get paid....

actualy no don't do that...this comparison is useless because Toronto is lightyears away from NYC And just for the record NYC subways are MUCH bigger MUCH older and are actually horrible

hey they deserve every cent they get..... driving i bus is hard in the city and they work hard

well i agree that they are 'just driving a bus' but you have to remember, they are also responsible for the safety of a lot of people on their bus. I guess when you take that into account, responsibility almost always = more pay.

take a look at commercial airline pilots, the auto-pilot systems are incredibly good these days, most pilots have to just sit back and relax, but they are paid to be there, for the safety of the passangers, just to make sure if the system fails, they can back it up.

This isn't a comparison of how much employees make or how older / newer the systems are.

The point was raised that government contributions to public transit should not be used to cover operating costs. I'm simply showing that in a place such as the USA where government involvement in ANYTHING is generally frowned upon in comparison to Canada, they actually contribute more to their public transit systems than we do.

and why would your freinds deserve more?????

I have respect for TTC employees but I do think they are already paid enough and with good benefits. There is no reason to hold the public hostage at your own expense.

I can easy use my car to get around but I do use the system to save myself the hassle of parking, but there are a lot of people out there that won't be able to feed their child if the buses don't run.

Can the bus system even go on stike? Legally-wise? There are professions that cannot go on strike like firefighters and paramedics.

also did you know that liquor store employess are not allowed to strike.

I (as some of you know already) repair/maintain the buses for the TTC & I've been doing that for several years now.I have a CZ drivers license in order to road test buses & whenever I was on the road to change off a bus, I would also get shit thrown at me & I'M JUST A MECHANIC

Let me remind you of ANOTHER fact...TTC management gave THEMSELVES a 5% raise a few months ago & whatever WE get in our contract SO WILL THEY.So in effect they will get another raise

I'm not saying it's bad i'm just saying that they are gettnig paid enough as it is and they are crying for more (not for the first time). They are getting paid as it is WELL above the Canadian average, granted living in TO is expensive and it's a "humble" profession but come on...

This is from stats Canada...

Average earnings by sex and work pattern

2001 -- 25,100 -- 39,100 -- 64.1
2002 -- 25,300 -- 38,900 -- 65.2

They are being paid well over 45K according to this on average...




And why my friends should be getting paid more? Well they are not really my friends just a few people I know. They've invested thousands and thousands of dollars into their education, they are considered highly educated professionals....so you do the math...for them it's now more worth it to go drive a bus instead.

You guys have to realize that this is just a stupid game played out by our union & TTC management...Even Moscoe said that today...I kinda doubt that we will walk and hope we don't .If there is a strike, the government would legislate us back to work like last time...


As a licensed "Coach Technician" for the TTC, the drivers outnumber the us (non drivers) by 4 to 1 and so even if our group didn't want to strike & the drivers do, then "we" have no choice.Thats why alot of my other mechanic friends wished we had our own seperate union.

exactly...and i'm not saying that TTC is BAD i'm jsut saying that it shouldn't be this way! People graduating with a Bachelor of Science can't find jobs. New immigrants with PhDs and Doctors can't work in Canada so they drive cabs...meanwhile these guys are crying over a 2% increase in wages difference. Something's not right here...

Where does this idea of humble bus driver come from? Does everyone think like this? Do you really think of bus drivers as a low status job? I would be a bus driver but 1) I suck at driving 2) I hate people and 3) I hate people when driving.

i see your point, but education can only bring you so far
the rest is all about work ethic and dedication........alot of the drivers have been driving the same route for years and have had to work there way up im sure
plus i doubt the newb drivers start @ the much

plus im not saying that your nerd freinds dont deserve it
i just dont like the fact your saying bus drivers dont deserve a little more to live off
plus next time your drunken ass is taking transit home think about the driver who got you there
