Pipex Upgrade

Pipex are upgrading customers to double speed before the end August, or you can pay 15 and have it done straight away.

However, Turner has pointed out to me that it is now cheaper to join at the inital speed, so in effect we will be paying the same price for 2mbit, yet new customers get 1mbit for over a tenner cheaper a month.

And during this changeover, we are still paying the full price for 1mbit new customers can pay the cheap rate on...

any ideas, comments?

www.pipex.net

- this is using uncapped b/w service btw

Existing Customers
Existing broadband customers will also be reaping the benefits and enjoying even more value for money as PIPEX will be participating in the network upgrade programme recently announced by BT Wholesale.

The majority of existing customers will benefit from the doubling of their connection speed at no additional cost, subject to line capability.

subject to line capability... hmm thats a tough one. i think my modem can physically go upto 8mbps, dunno about the line though. im pretty damn close to my telephone exchange. wonder if it works like that. signal strength or sommot

go to www.mypipex.net

login, go to control panel, then service choice, whatever package you are on...

then it'll have the double whatever you are on, then it says 15 please

correctomundo

generaly, ISPs like to put hard limits on capacity related issues such that if you aren't within 5kms of an exchange, you can't get dsl.. 5kms is good enough for 1.5mbps (1500k). adsl 1 is rated to 8mbps, but proximity matters kick in.. i'm not sure on the rates at which line speed drops vs. distance from exchange, as there are a number of factors involved..

while its mentioned..

adsl 2: 12mbps
adsl 2+: 24mbps

not sure on the uk market, but the aussie market which i follow - guidelines and standards for isps are being worked out for adsl 2/2+ at the moment. seeing as the uk and aussie broadband market has been pretty much paralleled (ie, monopoly on local loop), i expect the UK to be at the same sort of stage.

I think i may well be forced to upgrade now for 15 as i know for a fact mine will be upgraded the last day of August so for all that time i'm paying for 1mbit and could get 2mbit at the same price.

Posted by Jim on Mar-11-2005 23:54:

I didn't know I have to wait that long for them to upgrade

Ah well I don't pay the bill so who gives a fuck

Posted by Luke Terry on Mar-11-2005 23:58:

upped mine to 2mbit 2nite, hopefully it'll come thru soon

Posted by trancecadet on Mar-14-2005 18:43:

All exchanges are capable of 1mb. So if you have 512k now you'll get 1mb easy. BUT this doesnt mean you'll get the 2mb. I *think* 2mb has a reach of 2.5km. whereas 512kb used to be 5km but i think its 6.5km now.

Anyhow just a headsup that just cos youve upgraded to 1mb now doesnt mean you'll get the 2mb later on. depeneds if your line is good enough (line loss/signal db).

pipex upgraded mine today. took 7 days.

didn't know whether to pay the 15 or wait but paid it anyway.

getting cut off a few times though

Posted by DJ_FRAZ on Mar-14-2005 21:20:

ive been on 2mb with pipex since last year now.. and at one stage i was experiencing heavy drops, every few minutes.
so i rang them and said wtf
and they gave me another username and password, this bt monitoring thing where i signed in and they monitored the drops.
it didn't seem to do it ever again so theres another point of pipex's good customer service and their aim to get things right for you

Posted by trancecadet on Mar-14-2005 22:06:

ive been with pipex around 3 years now. They had problem back when they had the modem exchange offer but the last 2 years or so has been flawless. I honestly cannot recall the last downtime I had. I would recommend them to anyone.

I thought i was a special customer till I seen everyone was getting the free upgrades.

Posted by Turner on Mar-18-2005 21:36:

Gah, ive just tried to upgrade but ive been told that i cant get 2mbit, yet somebody who lives across the street can get it.

sucks dont it. I heard many stories like that.

hear a funny story bout a BT guy who couldnt get adsl cos he had overhead lines and they were old so he failed the line test. so he knocked the post down so BT had to replace the overhead line and he tried again for adsl and past the line test! lol

Can you get the 1mb?

yea, he can get 1mbit and is gettin it for the cheap rate now

still waiting for mine to be updraded to 2mbit, it's been over a week now. i like just under a mile away from the exchange, and the wires follow the road, its 2.5 miles that you can get higher than 1mbit init?

for 1mb upwards I think the line needs to be less than 3.5km

if your just under a mile away from the exchange then theres a good chance you'll get the 2mb. But the line doesnt always go the way the "birds fly" Ive heard off ppl living very close to exchanges but failing line tests cos the line actually runs a 5m trip before it gets to the exchange.

At the end of the day it depends on the quality of your line. If you have too much loss on it you'll fail.

Im not sure not everyone can get the 2mb even if they are in range. This is because not all exchanges are 2mb ready I belive.

Im around 4km from my exchange. I done a line checker and said I can get 512 (which I know since Ive had it over 3 years) and maybe 1mb but deffo not 2mb. I dont think ill even be able to get the free 512>1024 upgrade. How crap!

LOL read this here.. some guy who couldnt get adsl yet his neighbour can and they share the SAME telegraph pole. Only difference is his neighbour had new line. Like i said. Goes on line quality at the end of the day

Technically im saving money now, i was paying 34 a month i think, if your a new customer its about 24. So if i waited for an auto upgrade, i would have just been knocked back and would just have to pay 24. But with trying to upgrade now, and getting rejected, i now get it at the lower price. So 60quid saved.
