House Party

I'm doing a house party with at least 50+ people there next week. I'm going to just play and try to mix some hip hop in the start...should I break out some prog after that at the end of the night? They're all my age (14 - 16)...think they wouldn't mind?

That sounds like fun, where at? I don't think they'd mind, although I always hate it when people come up to me and want me to play the latest 50cent or something, while Im in the middle of a sweet trance set!

Good luck

Start with some comercial kind of EDM stuff then blend into the trance, lol SANDSTORM... anyway u get my drift.

Posted by trance85 on Mar-13-2005 05:33:

Or just look for trance/prog remakes of hip-hop

hopefully she gots sum teef

id prob play comercial dance. ian van dahl, fragma, ppk, dj quicksilver that sorta stuff. things they'd recognise. Id be too affraid of playing something too dark/trancy incase they lose interest in it.

They'll probably want you to put the hip-hop back on.

yeh id rather listen to the hip-hop too. actually id rather do a d&b set with hip-hop samples. i think hip hop goes with d&b better than it does trance.

i just played at a party like that this week. we had about 150+ people, but it was mainstream hip hop all night. i had fun sampling clips and added extra bass lines and whatnot. make it interesting

Give em some funky house lol.
j/k man, just do whatever's clever.

Posted by A83 on Mar-13-2005 22:56:

any hip hop or cheesey trance song suggestions?

Posted by djkoolaide on Mar-13-2005 23:13:

actually the funky house aint a bad idea... thats the same shit MTV plays when they show clips of people in a club and stuff. the kids there would feel like they are clubbin'

Posted by T-Soma on Mar-14-2005 01:04:

The only good thing about playing hip hop, rap n all is that most the people that listen to this music dont know shit about good djing so you can juz do some crapy stuff, or like juz mix one beat when fading between songs n they still love it, lol atleast at house parties round here.

I can't really mix hip hop due to the wide bpm range...one song could be 120 bpm, another could be 60

excuses...

Posted by Inertia on Mar-14-2005 03:16:

are you just playin the party, or is it YOUR party?

anyways, mixing hip hop is quite simple. just do cuts, and slap faders. with hip hop, this can sound really good. only mix tracks with BPMs close enough, otherwise, all you need is a good cue point on each track and know when to drop it in. thats all the theory there is to commercial/hip hop mixing. (read: i mean this as commercial DJing goes, i'm not even talking about anything close as turntablism with hip hop).

moving along... even though you may do this, and possibly enjoy it, do one or two more, and you'll be tired of spinning music you don't like (unless you're into this thing) and start hating the people that go to these places for liking the shitty music. that or end up some human jukebox. think about it, if you're a good DJ, what's the point of playing your music for people who won't understand... or even like it?

my suggestion, find out who likes EDM in your area. make friends with DJs. no matter how young you are, if you can hold your own behind the decks, other DJs will respect you. i'm not syaing you'll get booked or get any gigs, but you might get invited to a couple house parties they throw and maybe asked to spin some records.

i've thrown about 10 house parties in the last year, starting with 30 people gatherings to the last one, where i invited 20 friends and at 5am there were 150 people in my backyard. the scene here is so limited, that as soon as someone is throwing parties with good DJs the word flies all over. even got one of my friends his first booking, which turned into a residency at a club because of some promoters that crashed the party and loved how he spun. another got asked to compete in a DJ competition playing hard techno. the point is, it's all great fun, and can even be useful to your DJ career.

btw, if you do not do drugs, but don't mind people who do (something which will make things a lot easier for you in the scene) let them know this. that way, they won't be hesitant to invite you, or hang with you fearing you might look down on them for consuming drugs. they also seem to respect someone who is knowledgeable about music, parties hard and doesn't do drugs a lot, for some reason. if you in fact do drugs, then invite them to smoke up. it seems to be a great way to get to know people. if you have a problem with drugs, well, then good lukc trying to find a EDM loving crowd. i personally don't, and haven't ever done any drugs, but to me it's a personal thing, so other peeps don't really mind me being straight, and really respect the rules when they're at my house.

i'm just playing at it. I'm just tryin to get little things goin right now...I've been working on mixing hip hop tonight. If I just cut the music...It sounds horrible. I can mix a few tunes like I would with trance, but I don't have variety.

Posted by jmix on Mar-14-2005 05:39:

DJ Sammy - Heaven aha
Alice DJ - Better off alone ohhh

Man its tough.. Anytime Id practise, there would always be people over that were freind with roommates etc, and theyd always hate on the trance..

haters...

If its your party, Id say spin what you want and if it isnt goin well, then try some trendy stuff (if youve got it) Worst case scenario you could always bust out the ol winamp and find a shoutcast server to do the work for you.

if hiphop is really that hard for you.. ive got one word

funkymix

Posted by Derivative on Mar-14-2005 05:50:

fuck the trendy stuff. play what you are good at mixing and the stuff you and your friends like. nobody likes an imitator or a wannabe crowd pleaser. be bold!

I've already downloaded every single funkymix 2nd nature has ever made from his ftp he gave me access to, and I've heard them here on the radio.

Funkymix isn't any different than the songs...the same bpm is on the intro 10 seconds

Thinking of a set with tracks like this:

Astro - In The Moonlight (Original Mix)
Bhangara Knights - Fascinating Rhythm (Openair Mix - No Rap)
Dylan Rhymes f/ Katherine Ellis - Salty (Extended Mix)
Meat Katie Meets Christian J - Turn Me Out (Dino Ramirez Remix)

Now those are some bangin tunes

I thought u was doing a set at a kids house party.. I didnt realise its ur OWN house party.

If it was me id play whatever I wanted. if its mainly friends then who cares if u mess up experimenting.. and if anyone bitches at ur style... ask em if they can do better

Posted by A83 on Mar-14-2005 21:15:
