Evolving of your musical taste

Well, it might not be a completely new idea for a topic, but who keeps count anyway?

So. How has your musical taste evolved over the course of the years of trance-listening?

Me? I started off with Scooter and similar stuff... that's completely unlistenable for me now. I moved on from cheese to cookie-cutter trance like Blank & Jones, which I can't listen to either nowadays. It's just way too... you know, beginner music. Simple and catchy.

So, after that I discovered the joys of Psytrance and goa. During this period I've found huge amounts of new, interesting artists, making complicated and wonderful music.

I still love psytrance, but my taste has evolved every way from there. For example Juno Reactor, completely uncategorizable music, and just perfect. Their album "Labyrinth" was what I had needed a long time - a fresh blow of change.

Then, my newest love is Orbital, whom I thought I hated. I'm going to buy every damn album by these guys, it's almost purely GOLD! Aural pleasure, and it has the same, cold, breeze of freshness as Juno Reactor!

So what about you?

I've just expanded my listening tastes over the years. I don't think there was ever a time when I just listened to one style.

Examples! What did you start with? What came after that?

I've always listened to shitty music. The degree of the shittiness, however, has decreased over time.

For example, I used to listen to really shitty music back-in-the-day. I now just listen to shit music( thats why I am on this forum ).

I started off trance listening to gouryella, rank 1, blank & jones, greece 2000, planet perfecto etc etc back in the old days and i can still listen to them now. But i have also evolved to psytrance and goa, and what turned it all around for me was airdrawndagger.

From there i now listen to alot of techno and trance.

I still stick to the mainstream trance like "ASOT" and listen to stuff like "marco bailey - 160 minutes of"

Its all about my mood, when im happy ill listen to trance, when im moody ill listen to abit of psytrance/ techno.

When im optomistic ill listen to progg/minimal techno

Anthem house > trance, house, NRG, techno > anything break-beat > hell, anything.

Things just happened. I can't remember what order I found genres out. Every time I discovered a new genre I basically got into it.

I always listened to a wide range of music. If anything it is becoming narrower, as I am listening to less classical, rock, and folk etc. And focusing more on different types of electronic music as of late.

Well, if I count the first years of my life - I started with the commercial, Israeli full on.

Artists like Holymen, Eyal & Oren Barkan, early Infected Mushroom work and such was the key for me to the trance music.

We then called it "Acid", I think we were 8 or 9 y\o

Afterwards I discovered the internet, so I started to download songs off Napster and Kazaa, and after a couple of months I also discoverd the "Scouse-House", probably nowadays called uk cheese.

I think it was late 2002 when I joined a couple of Scouse-House forums, started to listen to Rez Q, Ultrabeat,Shelly and such.

In Feb. 2003 I joined TA, after searching for tracks in Kazaa and seeing the address on there.

Was pretty much a newbie (and still is) in everthing that was related to the good 99'-02' era of trance.

One of my first posts was a praising one for Carte Blanche, which I still think is amzing

In a couple of months I got to know another geners and sub geners, and got totally addicted to Uplifting, Epic and sometimes the more clubbish Hard Trance.

I was all into AvB, Tiesto, G&D [ old Summer Calling days ] and such..

After a year or so I also got to know Prog Trance and Prog House, and the related subgeners.

Now I'm still more into the Prog scene.
Artists like James Holden, Nathan Fake, Chab, Chus & Ceballos and many more influence me, but I never reject listening to other geners like Techno, Hardtrance and such.

mm, that's it I guess

When i was about 12 years old my idol was Michael Jackson and i bought all his albums over the years. It was my idol and i didnt listen to anything else really. After that i started listening to commercial Rap like Eminem, DMX, Ja Rule... shit like that.
When i was into rap i was really against anything 'house' (thats how i basicly called EDM back then, but i thought hardcore was the only 'house' music) related.
Then i began listening to EDM because i was bored with rap pretty soon tbh.
I began listening to hardhouse/hardtrance/retro then i went on to trance and now im more into progressive, house, elektro, ambient. Basicly anything that sounds good.

So you could say i made quite an evolution

But I still like good hardtrance, good trance and stuff. I still even like Michael Jackson his work. Anything up to 1995 anyway, what he made after that is pretty much crap. I dont listen to commercial rap anymore though. I really hate it even. And i dont like to listen to hardhouse anymore. But all the other genres i was really into when i was younger i still like now (if it is good)...

In EDM (techno, trance, house, breaks) I went from Music Instructor and Scooter to DJ Icey and Dj X. From Dj Icey and Dj X I went into Astral Projection and Yahel. From Yahel to Tiesto and Oakenfold. From those two i moved into Sasha and Deep Dish. From Sasha and Deep Dish into Chris Liebing and Hawtin. Now i listen to everything that is quality.

When it comes to hip-hop I went from Tupac to early Snoop Dogg. From Snoop to early Southern Rap (97-99 era). From Southern Rap to Biggie's first album (Ready To Die.) From Ready To Die to Masta Ace, Atmosphere, Vakill, Brother Ali (all underground acts.) From these underground acts I got into KRS-One, Rakim, and the old school. And old school led me to my present favorite hip-hop group.. The Roots.

I listen to The Roots because they are the best hip-hop "band" out there and quite frankly, they are geniuses.

This is a pretty typical case for anyone around in Canada back in the early 90's...

Anthem house/Euro House like 2 Unlimited, Snap!, The KLF, Haddaway, Ice MC, etc.: Mainy because it was the most popular back then. Think trance at the turn of the century, only faaar more so.

Euro Trance like Dance 2 Trance, Jam & Spoon, and trancier remixes of euro house: A lot of early trance did cross over to the mainstream back then, so it was a natural progression into it as I was enjoying a lot of the spacey sounds coming from it.

German Trance from labels like EyeQ, Suck Me Plasma, and Influence: A lot of the early crossover trance was produced by Germans. Naturally, I started digging deeper.

Everything Else All At Once: Say what you will about how 'Electronica' was nothing more than a corporate-generated hype machine -it also brought every single other genre ('side from hardcore) into the limelight. Probably the best crossover compilation that I stumbled across was the soundtrack to WipEout XL, as it contained FSOL, Chemical Bros., Daft Punk, Underworld, Photek, Fluke, Leftfield, and The Prodigy (amongst a couple others).

Pretty much enjoy whatever comes my way ever since to varying degrees. Obviously some more than others but I don't discount anything else (unless it gets overplayed to redundency; then I'll just ignore it for a year or two).

Oh, yeah. Along side those more upbeat tunes, there was also my delving into downtempo right along side it, more or less going in this route: Enigma/Deep Forest ---> Beyond/Waveform Ambient Dub series ---> Eno-esque ambient ----> Everything Else All At Once

1998: mtv. all time fav: cher - believe

1999/2000: bullshit "metal" such as linkin park, but started my taste for electronic music. chemical brothers, mr. oizo, fatboy slim, bomfunk mc's were the names that got me. also got my first trance tracks through this cd my uncle (?!) borrowed me "world of trance vol 8" full of german trance

early 2001: mauro picotto's "the album" amazed me, was the turning point, never went back to non-electronic music, but at this point i also liked cheesy hard trance of the warp brothers kind

mid 2001: got into the 1999 epic trance "classics"

2002: got into some proggier stuff, like james holden's early tracks, but later in the year i got especially hooked in the darker kind of trance, like m.i.k.e.

mid 2003: definitely went to the proggier side for once. all sorts of prog included as long as it was "dark". got into prog breaks

mid/late 2004: james zabiela's sets blowed my mind and i turned to whatever he (and james holden) plays, tech-house, breaks, acid house, electro, you name it. loved the pryda tracks too

early 2005: joris voorn and funk d'void takes me into techno. i still like a lot of prog, the boring and dull kind included, zabiela's fun music still keeps me going and i've also got into some of that early 90's trance

Posted by Floorfiller on Mar-13-2005 20:12:

lets see...

my interest in Electronic Dance Music comes out of the 80's when i listened to a lot of Brit Synth bands and rock with electronic elements like for example:

Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Morrisey, The Cure, Prince...

I also listened to a lot of Disco back in the day and still do...love that shit hehehe...

From there into the 90's i continued a lot of the same sorta stuff...but also caught on to some other things that really kinda started to drag me deeper into stuff...stuff like...

Bjork, CJ Bolland, Pulp, Orbital, Underworld, Massive Attack, Tori Amos...

after a lot of these type of things...i can of stumbled into Oakenfold and from there a lot of earlier stuff...

then my best friends older brother had a good friend move to london and he kinda got into the scene over there and we started listening to the gatecrasher cds he'd send us...and we started to go to a couple of parties here and there...learned about more dj's...

finally found my sound which was kinda that prog house sound sasha and oakenfold played back in 1998-2000 ish and liked banging that kinda shit ever since...

then ended up here eventually hehehe...

from here i think my tastes have really grown because i really like so much shit now, but i still feel that it all relates back to what i've always liked...solid beats and driving basslines...

i can't really say there has been a point in my evolving taste for EDM that i listened to a lot of the cheesey crap...i mean, i listened to a lot of stuff that i would look back and think...boy its really not that great, but i never listened to like Alice Deejay and ATB and stuff...although of course i knew all the tunes because they were on CD compilations...

never really into rap or punk or metal like a lot of people seem to be...i think i was kinda always looking for EDM...i just didn't really know how to find it...

Mainly starting off with the usual trance out there, anything playlisted by the big guys, Van Dyk, Tiesto, Armin, Ferry etc. Gradually moved into areas of trance such as the Progressive side, and now im really feeling Electro and some House

Posted by Zombie0915 on Mar-13-2005 21:26:

Hmmmmm, I guess it all started with my dad's music collection, His favorite musicians and the stuff I ended up growing up with was U2, Led Zeppelin, The grateful dead, etc. Pretty much your average classic rock station playlist.

Hearing my dad play these tunes all the time kinda ruined rock for me, I never really grew an appreciation for it, but now that I am older I can at least understand the stuff somewhat.

Early on in life I got fascinated with computers, electronics, and gizmos of all kinds, the person most responsible for this happening to me was this man:

Still unaware that an electornic style of music existed(aside from 80's pop), I pretty much continued to ignore music alltogether.

Eventually I was at a visit to my Uncle's(he lived in Cali, by this time I had moved to NC) He was into some of the really early classic electronica in the 70's and 80's. I enjoyed this style but his collection was all vintage records, I only remember some of the larger names he had in his collection, like kraftwerk and george clinton. Unfortunately I had no idea how to find those kinds of music and assumed that it just didn't exist any more.

Around this time the Alternative rock became friggin huge. EVERY SINGLE person I knew could recite the lyrics to green day - basket case. I hated the song, I hated the style, I hated all the kids who picked on me because I didnt listen to that kind of music.(although I will admit that pearl jam - jeremy resonated in me a bit). I grew to resent all of music because I thought the reason nobody liked me was because I didn't follow it.

Resolving to no longer get picked on, I attempted to follow the alternative rock style, thinking that if I was somewhat familiar with it I could blend in with my peers and no longer get picked on. I wasn't happy doing this, U would sit by the radio writing down song titles; eventually I gave a kid a bloody nose on the school bus and kids stopped picking on me.

I was in middle school by this time, I took an orchestra class to avoid going to gym every day, I started playing the Cello. We played really simple stuff to learn the instruments, I got pretty good at it eventually and started trying to play songs I would hear on TV, like the James Bond theme which I enjoyed cuz I spent a lot of time playing goldeneye. Around this time I started getting really passionate about computers, I would spend all the spare time I had in front of my parent's PC, we didn't high speed internet access yet though(but I still managed to download a few naughty pictures). I discovered a proram called Qbasic, started trying to teach myself programming, made a bunch of silly PC speaker jingles with the lovely beep command, at this point in my life the closest I had ever come to enjoying music or doing anything remotely close to electornica.

This continued until high school started, what also came during high school was a new computer that actually had a sound card. EDM started showing up in movies and stuff(or maybe I just started to notice). I started looking for something to play with my computer's new sound capabilities, it was around this time that I discovered EDM through a project that was ran by hyperreal. They had a small collection of EDM made by ameteurs, classified into categories, I didn't know which category I liked best, so I got one of each, I found that I enjoyed the tracks labeled as 'trance' 'ambient' and 'industrial'. I ignored the other genres at this time because I assumed that they would sound like the shitty ameteur tracks I had just heard(bad idea).

1 year later came the dawn of napster. Every kid had an mp3 of sisqo - the thong song. I used this program to explore music and finally find out who my favorite musicians were. But I didn't know where to look, I hung out in the chat rooms asking for recomendations, and I went through the stuff on amazon.com picking out the most popular selections from the electronic categories. This lead me to alot of good stuff, and my first music purchases were Alice Deejay - Who Needs Guitars Anyway, and Paul van Dyk - Seven Ways(Out There and Back would be released very shortly) I filled my hard drive with what I assumed at the time was the only good form of EDM, trance. I joined TA at the perfect time for this, when file sharing was acceptable and the board was full of suggestions for music to DL.

Eventually I left napster for Audiogalaxy, around this time I got into other styles, and started listening to alot of EDM streams, discovering that there was alot more stuff out there to be heard. My hard drive would fill with awesome tunage without e having to search for anything, I took a liking to basement jaxx, discovered the amazing music from BT, finally stopped listening to minisrty of sound compilations, because now I knew better.

Come 2001 the TA's reduce referring to PvD as 'God' (armin was still God in training though) Progressive style is on the rise, I join in the badwagon somewhat and get some of those S&D Global undergrounds. I lost interest in progressive pretty quickly though, I found it boring. I get more involved in my local scene, having recently found a message board full of EDM fans based in my home state, earlier I had assumed that my local scene did not exist, boy was I wrong on that one.

The local kids were(and still are) mostly involved in DnB and breaks, I was still interested in trance, but now it was probably only 25% of my collection. I got into house alot around this time as well, I liked stuff like junior jack - thrill me, and timo maas - shifter.

I graduated from high school, things changed alot after this, the file sharing ended, I was finally allowed to go out and party(actually I wasn't but I was 100 miles away from my parents so I did anyway). I got bored of listening to one style at a time, I took a liking to the mixed kinda styles like John B, who had recently visited a club nearby. I stopped listening to so much DnB, kids were getting into this really obnoxious roaring rumbling 'gangsta' crap so I found myself following trance again. ASOT was HUGE, I joined the chat room, posted my OMG's in the forum while he played, it was great fun.

2003 came, my first chances to see some big name trance DJ's. PvD made his first ever visit to NC, I took my first ever extasy pill. I rolled my brains out and had an amazing time, so amazing in fact that I drove 5 hours to DC to see armin 4 days later to do it all over again(my avatar is a pic from that party). Sadly this was also my last time seeing a big trance performance(except tiesto at nation the next summer, which I didn't have very much fun at). Around this time trance was experiencing a bit of a revival in my home state, I met a bunch of really cool DJ's and producers who lived hearby.

Still, trance is on the rise in these parts, the parties are getting increasingly frequent and increasingly successful. The kids I met and started hanging around with are now getting booked are a large part in the growing momentum trance is getting around here. There is a house party that we have grown to call trance paradise where we all come and meet several times a year, sometimes spur of the moment after parties happen there as well, last time this happened DJ Micro showed up to the house completely unannounced.

School gets increasingly tough and I find I have less time for music. I've gotten more into computers as of late, recently I started following these demo scene productions, I guess that is where I am right now, following yet another scene that people say is dead. Anyway, for anyone who hasn't checked out the demo style, I suggest listening to this:
http://willbe.planet-d.net/demovibes.htm
I find the computer music style very refreshing and diverse.

Started out with early German Trance briefly in the 93/94 with a compilation called "Logic Trance 2" and Cosmic Baby's "Thinking About Myself" album. However, it was after hearing Grace - Not Over Yet around 10 years ago next month that I was lead down the UK Trance path. I listened to stuff like Grace, The Space Brothers, Trouser Enthusiasts, Qattara, Sunday Club and basically anything on Platipus, Perfecto and later Xtravaganza. I've never considered myself to be "above" any music, if I like a track, I like it. When the Dutch "anthem" trance style really took off around 1999, I originally liked it a lot but listening to it nowadays it does nothing for me, and I find stuff like anything by Airscape absolutely unlistenable now. Since then I have put lots of my time and money into seeking out lots of early to mid 90's Trance and Progressive House which I missed at the time. mainly stuff that's only available on vinyl.

Posted by Flotser on Mar-13-2005 21:57:

Started with 90's dance & dream-trance stuff my big borther used to listen to.
than was a period of listing to israli Nizhonot stuff like Eyal Barkan.
than i discovered club-trance.
at first was listening to uplifting, but also to alot of hard-trance. i hate hard-trance today lol.
then i listened to lots of good uplifting stuff.
than i discovered psytrance, found some realy cool stuff. but today i'm kinda of dissapointed.
tryed some stuff like drum&bass, breakbit nice...
but today i'm mostly into Reggae\Roots stuff from 70-80 sound so perfect to me, i'm in love.
also a big fan of the Solid Steel radio show, and the styles Dj DK plays, like this funky-groovy-hip-hop with lotsa scratches and deep bass.
so for now i'm mostly into reggae.
but still listen to trance ofcourse and love it.

bah who cares

Good point Jason...

Yeah, same start I spose.
I probably really started getting into it with Delerium and some random cheese (thats how we all started, eh?) that filtered through the airwaves every once in a while, then when that wasnt satisfying enough I started collecting the "cookie cutter trance" as it was referred to. Listened to that for a long time, along with the usual 90s grunge.

Then I broadened my horizons to breaks, house, hard, goa/psy, and a bit of drum and bass.

An pretty much anything that Zabiela chooses to spin.

Re: Evolving of your musical taste

Let's see. I am 21 years old and I've been listening to electronic dance music since I was 5 years old (1988). The first and probably the biggest influence on me was the strong retro/electro 80s culture and disco. In early 90s I caught on the eurodance bug and the house bug. In 2000 I got en-tranced. I've basically been alongside EDM since I was born, I tried it all and I'll always love it.

Orbital is my all-time favourite band, I have several of their albums and over 100 hundred tracks that I've listened to millions of times. Check out my favourite tunes by the Hartnoll brothers (Orbital), "Chime", "Feeling", "Speed Freak, "Planet Of The Shapes", "Halcyon", "Monday", "Beached", "An Fhomhair", "Planet Of The Shapes", "Lush 3-1", "Lush 3-2" etc etc etc. Check out everything from them except their Blue Album, which I was EXTREMELY disappointed in ....

God, yes. I loved disco since I was very young. I have lots of disco, and I love it still today.

In 1998-1999 I experimented with rock/hip-hop mainstream music, and after a year I decided that mainstream music was not my thing. Now I am all exclusively electronic music fan.

Posted by Daver on Mar-13-2005 23:57:

Hmmmm...where to begin. I got into music blindly. I remember moving to a new town and everyone was all about Guns N Roses, Cinderella, & Def Leppard. I had no clue who they even were. The only band I had heard of, but had never heard was Kiss. I got my mom to buy me a radio using stamps you got from the grocery store from x amount of dollars of purchases. I listened to the radio all the time, recording songs I liked. I guess this was about '88. At this time, I had idea who I was on the inside.

Eventually, I found certain songs by Madonna to be kind of neat, particularly "Vogue" for the sweet bass line. Shortly after that, I go into heavy metal. The first time I heard Pantera I was hooked. I went through the "phase" of metal, and when grunge came out, it was cool for a while, then it just got old. I remember thinking (and still do), "why does everyone think they are mentally and socially fucked up?" This didn't sit well with me. I still liked metal, and went to every concert I could manage. During this same time, I heard 2 Unlimited on the radio, along with the other pop cheese dance hits. I liked the style, but they just didn't fulfill some strage deep seated desire I knew was there in me, but I didn't know what to do with it. I liked Culture Beat, and bought their CD, and it was the first major step in my EDM evolution. Couple that with some weed on the weekends, and I was a happy camper!

From there I remember being in college and talking to a guy at the record store. "What do you recommend for some good dance music?" He was asking me what kind of style I liked, and I was like, uhhh...hell I don't know. I picked up Keoki's "Disco Death Race 2000" and Psychotrance 1, mixed by Mr. C of the Shamen. The record store guy was like "PT 1 is kind of heavy, I don't know if you can handle it." Kiss my ass and ring it up. I didn't know what to think about it at the time, but I went to my first "underground" rave a week later and my eyes were opened!

I went back and listened to those CD's diligently. More! Must have MORE! After frying out a couple times, I went home for the summer and browsed the record shops for new stuff. I picked up some classic Oakie, and some other compilations. I found out real quick happy hardcore sucked ass and jungle was a bunch of crap at the time. Eventually, that led to Drum & Bass, House, and Trance being the way to go. D&B didn't really take off. House was huge at the time & locale, but I didn't know how to get the good stuff. Trance was always readily available, but not popular. I'm not one to jump on a bandwagon or follow a trend, so trance is the way I went; it just sounded right to me.

Along came Napster and my own personal revolution. I heard stuff I'd never heard before and I jumped down the rabbit hole with no reservations. As my knowledge became more refined and defined, I was able to walk in the dark without someone holding my hand. I knew what I liked and what I didn't. I still liked metal at this time, but EDM felt more 'right' to me. By this time, styles were being defined, and I needed some more guidance. Fast forward a few years later and here I am now. TA has opened my third eye and continues to further hone my interests. I cannot bear the radio anymore, and I can never seem to find an end to EDM. To this day, I just follow my ears, check out recommendations, and find what I can on my own.

Posted by Omega_Blue on Mar-14-2005 00:23:

I'm not gonna rant for two paragraphs. it went

early 90's grunge - pearl jam, nirvana, alice in chains, etc
old school speed metal - notably metallica during the late 80's
commercialized rock - present day sounds such as trapt
anthem trance - zombie nation, darude, ferry, you know
prog house - which first got me hooked with digweed's bedrock and a bunch of deep dish livesets
and now... just about anything, mainly breaks though - zabiela and holden are big influences nowadays.

Posted by DarkFall01 on Mar-14-2005 01:22:

As far as I can remember, the first groups I really liked were Elton John, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Santana, etc.
Later (around 2000) I "discovered" prog Rock, i.e. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Dream Theater and got hooked to these guys.
Also whenever DJ Bobo's first album came out, I loved that one

Later I started liking hardtrance, in 2001 it moved to trance i.e. PvD, AvB, Nu-NRG and little Techno. About 18months ago I just got sick of Trance and started looking for something new, listened to some Techno, liked it, but that wasn't it. Now I'm listening to lots of Psy and alot of Prog Rock

Posted by Dark Apostle on Mar-14-2005 01:47:

For me it all started with 80-ties pop music and as I grew up I got facinated with synthesizer music, then I enter my dance-phase in the early 90-ties to go over in a shortlived hardcore period halfway through the 90-ties.
Somewhere around 1998 I got in touch with trance music as a whole and began to mainly focus myself onto it. Along the way I picked up a good deal of psy and goa.
In 2001-02 I first heard industrial and electro and it took until near the end of 2002 before I finally went into it and developed my taste alongside my trance(addiction), I also picked up metal along the way and by 2003 i started to head back into hardcore (more specificly frencecore/darkcore/ industrial hardcore). In 2004 I got finally hooked on the raunchiness of industrial and all I have now is an empty wallet and far to much music that I like
