what genre is Enigma?

what is Enigma greatest hit?

probably Return to Innocence

or Sadness. The genre is downtempo, or chillout, or something of the sort.

When Sadeness was released, it was the best selling single of all time in Germany.

Their genre is New Age some might classify it as Worldbeat as well. They have have lots of great hits, but their most well known is 'return to innocence'.

last single was 'boum boum' last october.
Chicane and wally lopez mixes.

Sadness is their biggest track

Agreed. New Age is probably too broad (by the nineties everything made with synthesizers without a dance beat was dubbed "New Age"), but Worldbeat is correct.

Interesting, I didn't know this. On the European side I guess Sadeness was the biggest hit, but Stateside is was definitely Return to Innocence.

I love all of the Enigma stuff that i have heard.

It's very peaceful, calming music.....

They're like an ambient-dance. Their biggest hit in America was definitely "Return to Innocence". I guess "Sadness" was bigger in Europe.

Michel Cretu (the man behind Enigma) almost single-handidly created what I like to dub "erotic house". Sure, house in general tends to be quite sexy, but never erotic. After Sadness, tons of copycats tried to cash in on that sound (heck, you should see the soft porn soundtracks of the early 90's -filled with the stuff), but even Cretu couldn't top it (he tried with a few numbers, of course, probably most notably Age Of Loneliness -which Jam & Spoon actually did an interesting remix of!).

Not only did Sadness become a hit with soft porn soundtracks, it also became a hit with fetishists for that same eroticism it creates when you play it (especially in conjuction with Principles Of Lust off the album).

Personally, I preferred Mea Culpa.

Note: No, 'erotic house' isn't really a genre. I just like to call it that so don't go bugging Ish about its exclusion on his guide.

Personally I'd just call it ambient, even though it does have a beat. If you want you could call it "ambient (insert noun here)". Their biggest hit would be a toss-up between Sad(e)ness and Return to Innocence.

Been loving enigma ever since I came across 'Sadeness' in like 1992 or something.

Best track for me is either

'Age of loneliness'(Carly's song)
'The child in us'
or 'Gravity of love' <----- how he turned a mega dark piece of music into an ambient track is astounding.

I can't decide between these three.

'The child in us' is great, very nice hindi vocals
