say I wanted to start djing as a hobby

what basic equipment do you guys recommend?
i saw this site: here
and am wondering if that is a good basic choice?
ive been listening to electronica for a long time now and have always been eager to get into the field of djing just for fun.
i really dont know where to begin, ive had no experience with it, but i guess the first step is to start buyin equipment and vinyl.
if any of you guys can suggest me anything thatd be great.

Well, first off act like you never looked at that one web site. It's really not that good of equipment. Next your going to want to decide how much you have to spend and post that on here. It will be of help to the people giving you suggestions. Just keep in mind that the more you spend on equipment the better it is going to be. Try to avoid buying cheap shit. It will end up breaking on you too soon and will make your djing experience a nightmare. I guess to be short and sweet, technic turntables are the best, allen & heath mixers are great, pioneer mixers are great also, there is a wide range of very decent speakers and headphones out there. Theres a couple of my tips.

heh. i know its not cheap. i understand that
but i will definately think about getting something like Traktor like u said. if i spend a lot of time on it i will come back and ask you this question again
perhaps put a bit more money to the side in the process.

Get used technics, and the best mixer you can afford AFTER you've bought used techs. That way you will (possibly) have to upgrade your one mixer in the future, but you wont ever have to upgrade your turntables.

to be honest, if its just gonna be a hobby, I'd suggest picking up cheap cd decks...there are cd decks made by Numark that have built in mixers. You won't see PVD using them or anything, but for someone looking to learn the basics on a bugdet, they're a smart choice.

well at first it will be a hobby, then if i get good enough i will begin doin some house parties or small clubs, or w/e, you know what i mean

thanks bud, i will definately lookinto those. i knew technics were pretty much used by everybody thats got an idea of what their doing. didnt know bout the mixers but i do now
im not looking to be a cheap ass when it comes to buying equip. but i am not the richest guy in the world, so i will look into some midrange prices. thanks again

I am going to agree with Digital on this one =) This ain't cheap. I just bought my tables and viynl about 6 weeks ago and lemme tell ya, I'm always checking out where I'm gonna get my next "stack" of viynl. LOL I never knew the "drug like" effect buying viynl has until I statred. I already spend before I get paid LOL but that how it goes and I couldn't be any happier in my choice on buying tables.

I did ALOT of research before I went and bought my Technics 1200 and Denon mixer. I couldn't believe the amount of junk people try to push as GREAT Beginner or MUST HAVE for a starter. Being in Alaska I went to all kinds of forums and talked to various DJ's and asked what the best route for the BIG first purchase and it all started to sound the same after a couple weeks. Buy the best and don't waste money on the "Grest Beginner" packages, and that's the advice I took and I couldn't be any happier putting forth the money for the best.

If you love the music and you can see yourself with the dedication it takes then by all means take that leap but if you still ahve questions then sit back to some reading and then it'll come to you whether or not you wanna do this =)

shit if its just gonna be a hobby and all you're doing is fucking around, just get traktor and buy some tunes from beatport. then if you really like it and start understanding the concepts, buy some decks. there's no point in wasting cash in something that you may or may not enjoy.

just go ta a friends house and try to mix on his decks you won't be the next tiesto or pvd but it's a start go and ask local dj's

I didn't wait when I got my first set of tables(gemini-xl300), now i'm saving to get some technics. I've had these for about a year and learned to spin, but when I played a few house parties on technis, I knew I needed to slow my record budget in order to save for some used technics.

Get the technics, you can always sell them off if it ends up goin nowhere and not lose much cash at all.

YEAH MATE BEST WAY IS TO READ ALOT OF INFORMATION AND LEARN YOURSELF,
BUY DJ MAGAZINES AND USE THE NET TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.
MOST OF US DJ'S LEARN THROUGH PURE INTEREST AND PASSION (A WAY OF LIFE) ALTHOUGH I STILL GO TO SCHOOL!

The thing is DJing isn't too hard. Its like learning how to ride a bike with a much steeper learning curve. If you get good equipment and practice for say 6months to a year you will be good enough to play house parties and small clubs. Just my 2cents

Very true. I quit smokin pot over a month or so ago, and I've spent just as much(if not more) on records. However I still need to invest in technics.

you guys make some good points. ill think hard about what u said

one last thing- if you are gonna buy some equipment, i wouldn't waste your money on techs if its just gonna be a hobby. just get some basic direct drive tt's, 2 chan mixer, decent headphones, you don't need anything fancy. unlike what people on the boards will tell you, technics are NOT a requirement to start spinning.
