Traveling abroad alone
A little bit change of pace here, folks....
As some of you know, I went to Amsterdam last month for Trance Energy, and I went alone. Talking with some friends and TAs, most of them had one thing to say to me: "You got BALLS for going to a foreign country BY YOURSELF."
I'll admit I was nervous, but that was part of the fun and excitement of being in sucha far, distant land...In August I will be putting up a Trance Energy 2006 pre-prep thread in FLTA, becuz quite a few TAs are down to go next year, and since I know my way around Amsterdam pretty well, we won't get lost.
For TE 2005, I had a few interested in going but I kinda gave it on short notice, and no one could make it. I still said, fuck it. I'm going even if I have to go alone.
I went to Colombia to be with family many years ago alone, and I had a ROTTEN time, but this latest trip....I loved it so much.
So, my question to you guys up here is, would you travel to a far off place alone, or would HAVE to go with someone?
I went to Amsterdam for Inncercity 2003 alone...and not only that I flew to London England, then had to travel across the city to the train station, took the train to Brussles Belgium where I had to switch and get on the train to Amsterdam...and same thing back
Spend a night in London without a hotel room and fly back home the next morning
OHH YEEAAA GOOD TIMES! Would do it all again in a heart beat

One of the reasons I went alone...didn't want a tail, and I knew I wouldn't get to see everything I wanted if I wasn't alone
when I go traveling I WANT to be by myself. Sure the company would be nice, but I want to do everything I want to do at my pace. Sure ill meet up with friends on the trip (I think it will be impossible to go to europe over a summer without somebody I know being there)
and I went to WMC by myself...not hard at all. But I did meet nat while I was down there, and we spent most of the time together after that.
I think I would have to be with someone. I enjoy being on my own but since I've NEVER travelled anywhere, I think I would have to go with someone for that extra companionship in case something happened.
I don't think I could go to a club by myself either, but who knows

As for the traveling, well I def. enjoy it and wouldn't mind doing it again.
Ive travelled all over Europe by myself and my trips to argentina have been solo as well.
There are several reasons for this.
1) the most important reason.... if i were to wait for my friends to get it together and come with me id have never left the country.
2) you meet more people this way.
Advice... go alone and pick a good backpackers hostel. Preferably one with a bar and a chill out area. I recommend the Flying Pig in Amsterdam. Grab a beer and start talking to everyone around you. Unlike here, people there are willing to meet new people and make new friends. Almost guarunteed u will have friends to go with to the party. The backpacker's culture combined with the generally much friendlier european attitude means that you won't be travelling solo for long as long as you are receptive to the kindness of strangers. (a tough thing to be if you are from Toronto)

Oh yeah and having your own bathroom/shower is quite a convenience too
...but other than that the Flying Pig in Amsterdam is one of the best
travelling alone is fun -- A portion of my last trip to Italy was spent alone, and my next coming up to Spain will be spent mostly alone. It's different though -- your never really alone, you always meet tons of people along the way from so many various different places. It's half the fun really.

Also it wasn't much bigger than a closet, and I WISH i was exaggerating.
I didn't wind up losing anything though (except my sobriety when I got stoned as fuck in the hostel with some of the kids/students staying there...GOOD TIMES!)
The funniest thing that happened to me in Amsterdam was standing on the VIP stage of the Rio De Janeiro room during Innercity 2003 and a woman approached me and struck a converstaion...after some time she asked where I was from and I said Toronto...and the first thing that she said was...OOHHH BLUE JAYS!!!
I was so stunned...out of all things about TO, Amsterdam people know the Blue Jays!!!

Travelling alone is key. So the stories of your red light district advertures don't follow you home.......
jk.
This summer, me and 3 friends are going to sensation. Chances are the 3 will back out because of a lack of funds and I'll end up going alone.

Karim
i wouldnt travel anymore alone.
specially for long trips.

...plus the previously mentioned nobody can plan anything, plus it was literally a last minute dicision.
It's quite fun actually
Sometimes, it's good to go with a friend who can play wingman for when you spot those 2 cute girls at the museum.
"Excuse me girls, we're lost, can you direct us into your pants?"

| Originally posted by starsearcher Well for me it's more like this (the typical conversation) Me: "I'm going to Amsterdam in 2 days" Someone I know: "DUDE AWESOME you gonna smoke awesome joints!?" Me: "You know there's more to do in Amsterdam than smoke joints" Someoone I know: "Who cares you're in Amsterdam you gotta smoke something" Me: "I want to go see Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and the arts and cultural events and museums...and go to Innercity" Someone I know: "That's gay...boring" ...so therefore I am going alone ...plus the previously mentioned nobody can plan anything, plus it was literally a last minute dicision.*EDIT* Also when you go with a group of people you hardly ever meet anyone new cause you're always together as a group...you get to meet many more people if you're on your own It's quite fun actually |
And the weed, the brownies, the women...you get the idea.
