How Can I Prove the Talent Required to Produce EDM?

I always get jumped on by people around me for listening to EDM. They think that any idiot can make this kind of music. I need a good online source which easily and clearly describes the amount of talent that is required to produce EDM. I know I can just ignore them, but I am to stubborn.

it takes the same amount of talent to produce anything really. You can make shitty edm, you can make shitty rap, you can make shitty rock. Or if your good you can make good edm, good rap or good rock.

so good luck

I don't think there is any kind of source that will tell you. Make a track with them and send it to labels, thats the only real way i suppose!

Just kick their faces in.

On a serious note though; good luck, I know how frustrating it can be. And I still haven't figured out a way.

.. except kicking their faces in

They're the idiots lol

meh i'm very sick of friends who make fun of me for listening to "techno", there is no way to go about enlightening them, or changing their minds, or whatever. Tell them to make a track if it's so easy, even if they had all of the latest programs and equipment they wouldn't even know where to begin. Any great dj will tell you is a lifestyle, it takes a lot of effort and time to be good at what you do. I think i remember tiesto saying in an interview he hasen't gone a day in a lot of years without working on his music for several hours.

It doesn't require talent to produce EDM. In fact, nothing in life requires talent, as it is simply the capacity of standing out in the crowd. That is not required, it's appreciated

Posted by beats and beeps on Mar-22-2005 03:49:

You can't.

How can I prove that it takes more talent to write a peice of music than it does to sequence one on a computer?

I can't.

But it doesn't take talent...

You only say that because you don't have talent...oh, snap!

Any idiot can make EDM but getting it signed, played and it meaning something to somebody is a whole different story.

Posted by JakeC on Mar-22-2005 07:53:

slap a computer in there faces and say make a track then bitch!

Posted by muckluck on Mar-22-2005 08:14:

Yeah it doesn't. It requires money if you want expensive equipment and software, or just a software synthesizer program, both with minimal computer knowledge required to make tracks. If you know your way around computers and learn well you can just pick up this stuff and make EDM. You can't just pick up a guitar or a violin and start playing music. That takes training and talent. That's not to say that some EDM producers don't have talent, but few do.

I guess you could let them listen to a Cosmic Baby track then tell them that it was made by a guy with over 10 years classical piano training.

thats just stupid.

of course you can pick up an instrument and start playing atleast a basic piece...

just the same with the computer music, yes you can copy a DR.Rex loop in reason but it will take a while to make top quality tracks.

Everybody can write an exiting book. Come on it's just a story, and I know how to write, I even have word on my pc. Pretty much the same retarded logic.

Anyone can make any genre, bassically though it may be total shit

see i can rap

"rap is crap"

Ok it wasnt very good... but thats the whole point. Anything is possible

Posted by torontotrance on Mar-22-2005 16:08:

if you have marginal talent, a big ego and you get PvD to actually like your shitty tracks, you as well can become just like the talentless hack known as thomas datt

if you want to be the next mr.sam, tightarm someone who has talent into helping you with a mean contract. Tho I heard from a few sources that Arturo is trying to be the next mr.sam

With most instruments, you can't. Or you shouldn't at least.

If you want to call some stupid fuck playing system of a down on his guitar, he still usually needs to print tabs off of the internet, and learn how to read tabs.

Piano is one where you could, and drums, but again, these are both percussion. I mean piano is probably the best instrument, but its very simple, so essentially someone can press keys and do what sounds good.

Instruments like trumpet, violin etc. are extremely difficult to learn without the least bit of guidence. Besides, to be honest with you I'm narrowminded enough to say that any musician is bullshit if they can't read music. Sadly enough some of the best popular musicians strait from the 60s onwards did'nt read music. Alot more than you realise did though.

Well, the talent required for the making of EDM would be contingent on what style of EDM we're talking about.

If it has quality melody and flowing vocals with subtle textures, that takes an AWEFUL LOT of talent to produce. If you're talking about stuff like electro-house or EDM styles that are almost exclusively percussion with no real melody, then I'm afraid it takes almost zero talent.

Posted by Stassi on Mar-22-2005 17:49:

talent..
what a stupid word.
If you are passionate about music but do not pursue it because of "lack of talent" you are stupid.
Talent is something that can not be measured, because it is non-existant.
Its all about skill and creativity.
Having said that, good EDM requires both, just like all other types of good music which constantly pushes the boundries of music as we know it.

Skill/Talent...same clown with a different hat.
