Hoe much does a DJ cost?

IM thinking about guys as Van Dyk, tiesto and Ferry Corsten

How much do they want for a gig?

Posted by arturob on Nov-16-2001 15:41:

van Dyk is approx. 35K - 45K

Many Greetings,

f0x

Posted by DJ_D|ABL0_ on Nov-16-2001 16:25:

... and if u can afford them, maybe u should spend about 50 a night going to see them, and the rest of your money to learn how to DJ yourself!!

Mind you, it's a bit steep innit!

Not a chance! 35 - 45 thousand, get real! Tickets to see PvD were $18 here in Toronto, they would have to sell over 1900 tickets just to cover HIS cost let alone operating costs (at $35000) which I doubt they did, nor did they take a loss in bringing him here.

Posted by arturob on Nov-16-2001 17:06:

dood. if i tell you Paul cost this is because he was going to book
Paul and it was going to be 25,000 - 30,000

GET YOU REAL! cuz i know the DEAL.

Many Greetings,

yeah, i heard that pvd only gets around $7k per hour which would be $21k for the 3-hour set i saw him spin in vegas. that seems about what he would make considering the $20 admission and that's kinda sad considering that he "re-werks" a lot of tracks that you'll only hear at one of his live performances. plus he spins some originals that you'll never get your hands on. an amazing performer. but fox could be right considering he's one of the biggest pvd addicts on the board.

well im sorry but i dont care who u are, $35,000 for upto 3 hours work is an insult to all the hard working people out there. it is total madness.

Posted by uberclkgtr on Nov-16-2001 17:52:

Starfox is right. Oakie gets a similar $25k per set too.

And you're right, it is insane!

I'm going to see PvD in Washington DC in a week. The math doesn't look good:

$35 a ticket x 3000 ravers = $105k

And what about the venue and all the other DJs that need to be paid? Wouldn't want to be a promoter...

Posted by Excite on Nov-16-2001 17:57:

A PVD set is not worth $30k right now...jut pop in one of his $20 "Politics of Dancing" CD's and you can hear the exact same thing.

Naja come on guys, can't understand why everybody has to hype all the time so much! Sure the DJs earn much but it depends mostly where and when they spin and who book him! I know e.g. that a PvD spins one time in the UK at a new years eve party for 250 000 UK Pounds and that was the absolute record so far for a DJ! But I also know that he spins e.g. at a famouse rave in Germany for not even 1500 UK pounds!

And I'm sure when the european stars make a USA tour they earn also less then normaly!

Greetings

In Berlin, Paul spins for free sometimes.

As he is the owner of 'The Love From Above' event, he invites 1 DJ as his guest to spin in the middle of his set.

VANDIT Nights @ Casino Berlin are hosted by Paul, and vandit books 1 DJ to play together with him. hehe so Paul don`t have to Pay himself =p

Also, in the Loveparade (Paul has his own Float, he plays for the people, not for the $$$$$.) and in Mayday, is not too much $$, and he plays for the people too.

But when he goes to USA, or other part in the world, his booking cost can go as high as 30,000. A NYE with PvD could go up to this price.

Many Greetings,

f0x

What most people forget when calculating like "It`s 18$ a ticket so you would need 1900 ravers..." is the drinks everyone has. Water can be quite expensive these days...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that way

maybe, but it depends where you're at. for example i promote in the LA area and the club owners down here know what the bar makes and the greedy bastards don't give us a cut of the bar anymore. so all we make literally is what we make at the door. granted we sell stuff like glowsticks and the like but we would rather rent out space to vendors cuz we could make more that way. ya know like how old skool raves had the vendors with mixtapes or pacifiers or whatever. thing is that it's hard to get vendors in the club these days. can't figure out why. it's a rough life these days.

Points out it is Supply and Demand. There is not any ppl like PVD and tiesto except themselves. Also they can ask and get the amount of money that they want. Oakenfold is still the king of money grabbing, i'm told at least 50K USD for a 3 hr set. Also these rates change cause you essentially make an offer to a deejay. Most deejays will tell you, they are willing to get paid less if you let them play longer. Of course fox is right about pvd, it is 35,000 USD per set but it's a business remember.

Posted by Lost on Nov-16-2001 22:37:

yeah prices also vary depending on the situation. for example NYE will fetch higher fares than the regular show. also competition makes for higher prices. example is that the dj's management sets a base price such as tiesto will spin in LA on this date. price is $10k. then the companies in LA will all compete for the bid. for example we'll bid 10k and then giant will bid 11k and then spundae will bid 12k and so on and so on. we were supposed to get sasha and digweed but then were outbid by liquified. oh well. would have been cool to have all access with those two though. so if there's a lot of competition in a particular location then the dj will make a nice premium spinning in those areas. that's how it works out here anyways. don't know about other places.

@ the showbox a month ago, tix were $30US and far less than 1000 people were there, plus there were 2 other dj's that played as well as all the costs bla bla bla, dunt think pvd made ALL that money...maybe 20K....maybe

Juricimo remember this, sometimes a club will take a loss on a certain dj to promote the club and get ppl to come at a later date where they can make profit, but you never know. Remember this, the club makes most of it's money selling overpriced drinks and stuff. So i imagine that pvd got his fee or whatever. Clubs make money many other ways than the tickets or cover and stuff. Just thought you would like to know Juricimo. Anyways i don't see Spundae or Giant closing or other clubs, so they must be doing very well. Same with the Guvernment/Koolhaus in toronto.

my friend was going to book Paul for NYE and as Lost say is right.
It's by bidding. But this year, Paul chose GIANT along with Sander K.

and for most Paul gigs. the price excceed the 30,000 US Dollars.

I can't agree with you more. Some places draw more money. It all depends on the venue, party, promoters, etc. For example, Tiesto will take a smaller cut if he had a good vibe earlier. Tiesto will be at New Orleans next week. I saw him there at the same venue in New Orleans for $15.00 a ticket back in April. I say there was 150-200 people. You do the math. So why in the world would he come back to New Orleans? That was a great party. I had a wonderful time chatting with him. He assured me he would come back and he is. At New York last week, tickets were $40.00 each. Granted Rui Da Silva and a bunch of other DJs were playing, Tiesto got paid more without a doubt. $35k for Paul van Dyk is a little steep for some venues, but sounds about right if it was at a large party with just himself headlining. But to put that into perspective, Sash & Digweed both played at a party in Las Vegas last year for $40k total. Do the math there.

jesus christ, paul van dyk can get a new Lexus IS300 every time he plays a set...this is fucking amazing

Posted by Flowtation on Nov-17-2001 08:52:

When Oakie Spun 2 local clubs (one Hour per club) where i live he got 3,000 for the 2 hours! which is approx $5,500 (My Friend does the payroll) so u sure they get that much or does it vary dependin on wot country there in?

crazy world hehe peace!
