What are???
We've all heard of the likes of Tiesto, pvd, paul oakenfold, carl cox...
my question is what makes the ppl like them so much???
i mean their most common atribut???
they're good
probably that they've been spinning for years which kinda causes this power of suggestion.... when i went to see pvd the first time he spun central park, it really honestly seemed to me, that even though his mixing was on, because it was him, and because there was this huge "scenester" feeling among the crowd, the man couldve spun anything he wanted, and because his name was pvd the crowd wouldnt give a shit, they'd be jumping up and down... and up... and down... it all felt really fake, like you were "supposed" to enjoy it... the man mixed great, but that whole thing when people say tap into you and take you on a journey, certainly didnt happen with me, i ended up in pain from standing in one spot for so many god damn hours... im not new to this, ive been into this shit for about 10 years, and i was a fan of pvd for a few years as well, theres no "hater" mentality here... but ne how my point is i believe at a certain point with being a massive dj, it almost doesnt matter what u do, as long as u get up there... i mean come on, the mans no.3 and i checked a tracklist of a new set posted on this site, and the mans still spinning for an angel and time of our lives, i loved those tracks, but i thought a big part of djing was going out of your way to find new tracks.... and yet people still lose their minds to this guy, there has to be a huge power of suggestion thing going on here (for lack of a better term) i know you guys got your opinions, and id like to hear them, just please dont yell at me, i didnt mean to piss on anyone

and i agree with you, most people i see here who know their shit feel very free in giving out harsh criticisms when seemed deserved to big time djs.
their productions?
no, we werent talking about productions, at leaset i wasnt with my big rant
Funnily, I really dont rate many of the bigger name djs, I find the up n comings far more entertaining.
carl cox however deserves all the credit he gets
Those DJs you're talking about have done a lot more than any of us ever will to push dance music around the world. No they're not great technical mixers except for Carl Cox.
once i again i agree, theyve done alot to push dance music, but that type revolutionary ideals they put forth, was how long ago? and i agree with that other guy, up and comings are definitelly more entertaining... but yea i mean led zepellin was revolutionary... but robert plant and whoevers left of that band, wat they're doing now sucks, and im not gonna kiss their ass for wat they do presently because wat they did in the past was so great
i never ever said that i didnt have respect for tiesto or pvd, i just said i saw pvd live and it did absolutely nothing for me wat so ever, and that the whole thing just felt very fake and corporate

you're right, if i dont like it go find something else, but i never ever said anything like that, nor did i say i was still listening to these guys, and if i didnt like trance, i wouldnt be here. and u did bring up a very good point, wat about people who never heard these tracks before, thats a good point, but they got sets every where, where people can go and listen to these old tracks, there by leaving the dj plenty of comfort to constantly bring in new tracks there by not disapointing all the great fans hes brought in over the years.... see ur philosophy to me is saying "worry about bringing in new fans, and dont worry so much about the ones u earned" that philosophy isnt quite for me, but i respect where ur coming from... i also noticed though, that tracks i listened to approximately 10 years ago that blew me away, i play them for people now, they say they dont like it, and then i present them with todays sound of trance, and they like it.... by the way, this threads turned into a nice creative conversation.... very enjoyable
oh, just cuz i dont like the sounds of certain djs doesnt mean in anyway i dont like trance....
shit i keep forgettin parts of wat u said.. u say that y deny people who want to hear those tracks again after how many years... i dont see ne one anywhere doing reviews of recent sets by paul van dyk saying "he spun for an angel and time of our lives and it was great"

Good posts ESMdjm600
I agree with you 100%
thanks, id be lying if i said i wasnt busting blood vessels thinking so hard.
just to say, i wasnt pissing on Mr. Cox, u had tiesto and pvd in the same sentence as him, i naturally glanced over Carl... Two things id like to say though. instances like this, wat seems to be pretty cool, i mite be wrong, but i dont see color lines... i dont see anyone going "u know that dj he goes ape shit on 3 decks and wat not?" and then someone answering him going "that black guy?" thats another thread for another day, but more than likely, i click search and there it would be. Other thing i wanna say off-thread, is that the depth of this convo has really regenerated my motivation for djing, starting to actually bring that deeper meaning that i lost and have been trying to regain
u know actually, i dont even think im pissing on tiesto or pvd, i mean how can u not respect anyone who worked, and then achieved, theres really nothing wrong with that... i have to apoligize for thinking so fragmented, i honestly think all the drugs over the years has caused me not to be able to think in one complete thought

well. to get famous, they have to be good. once they're REALLY famous, they can shit themselves, and there will always be someone celebrating it. i'm not saying they all do this, but many have.
like, Oakey, for instance. before the flaming comences, no one can deny the man went downhill after 2000, and even if you like what he's up to now, it's not anywhere near comparable to his EM Tour sets. sure, he has done a lot for trance, and dance music as a whole, but that doesn't mean i still have to worship his ass.
nowadays, dance music being a lot more popular, if there is and up and comer that becomes famous, you can bet your ass it's because he's good. guys like these are James Zabiela (who, even if you hate his music, you are an idiot if you say he is not technically impeccable) who started from nothing, and caught the eyes of the big boys. Magda, the minimal techno DJ, she is a great DJ and producer, now touring with Richie Hawtin. you have guys like Frank Lorber, who has been spinning records since he was 15, and now at 29 has the prestige of being called "Sven Vath Jr." (even though i'd rank him above Sven... have never heard anyone mix techno on 3 decks so cleanly and sharply, and such an amazing track selection).
these will be the fathers of electronic music tomorrow. and, in contrast to todays leaders, they do have people that they have to beat, to work harder than, to impress. back when Danny Tenaglia, Digweed, Sasha, Tiesto all started out, they were apparently 'pioneers' in their area. they (some of them) seem to hide behind this fact and continue to do what they did 5-8-10 years ago, in a neverending cycle of monotony. others move on, and justify their existence, proving they are not just some obsolete figurehead.
