Recording Software

Hi dudes,

just wanna ask what software i can use to record my sets. I'm using CoolEdit at the moment, but i guess there is better software available. A heard soimething about a program where u can even edit the bass-line of your set so that is sounds more professional.

I guess this question is already asked, my excuses...

what exactly do you mean edit the bassline? that doesnt make sense.

I think he may be talking about programs that have compressors built in to help give your set a little bit more of that "Warm" sound...

I actually just find Apple's built in prog "Sound Studio" to be quite a nice way to record sets... but that's only if your one of us "Apple" dudes...

Now if I could only figure out how to braek up my sets by track in Toast, I'd be real happy...

cool edit should have a dynamics/compression tool built into it. ive used adobe audition a few times (which is cool edit after adobe bought it) and as far as i can remember it does.

sound forge has a compression/dynamics for sure because i used it yesterday. i dont see any reason why cool edit does not though.

and you dont need to compress pro tunes any more than they already are. 90% of most dance tunes these days are brickwalling already. they dont need any more life squashed out of them.

I heard something about a program Mp3 Xtreme or something like that. That program u r able to edit your mix.

I ask thiz because i want my mixes to sound like a professionel CD (mix).

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ free and good.. im using cool edit (there are eq's compressors + stuff on all of these programs) but this is good enough for a free

first off, if you want a professional sounding CD, that starts with good mixing skills and a proper progression. all the software in the world wont make up for this.

I would recommend cooledit/audition as well as soundforge. you might get some benefit out of WaveLab also.

however, the most of your benefit is going to come with DirectX and/or VST plugins for your sound editing app.

Sound Forge's normalize function is good, for evening out levels.. but T-RackS24, a VST plugin, is even better.

as far as working with your bassline... a multiband (aka frequency selective) compressor might be exactly what you are looking for. there are a number of VST plugins that accomplish this.

you will also need to go through the mix section by section and apply corrections.. mainly changing levels and adding post-mix EQ corrections after a proper overall equalization.

the amount of post-mix editing you will do is inversely proportional to how good the raw set is. so do multiple takes and do your final editing to your best take.

and take your time. its a fair amount of effort to put together a mix disc that is truely professional.

you need to learn how to use cool edit. because it has an intergrated EQ and multi band dynamics tool. soundforge isnt that much different and for most intents and purposes serves the same function as cool edit/audition.

before you start using multi band compressors its probably a good idea to learn how to use a normal compressor and see what kind of effect you can create with it - warning: it is much more subtle than you initially think.
