Kingston Uni

I'm thinking about heading back to England again for another semester of study abroad. Anyone give me an idea on the Kingston upon Thames area? Good uni, good area to live in? Aside from housing, what are costs of living like? SHOULD I GO?!?!

Cheers

I have a couple of mates who go to uni there and neither have complained about it.

the women are lovely, and you'll get great clubbing nights as DJ_MDMA and myself live about 3 miles away form kingston

DO IT

yep we live very close to kingston. I believe that it is a good uni. Kingston has an, *ahem good nightlife with lots of bars and student bars so drink is plentiful and cheap. there is the local commercial clubs such as the works and oceana, which are very cheap on student nights. They don't offer much musically tho, altho the main room in oceana does play a lot of house. And of course lots of fun times are to be had with the london lot.

rick's lying, the women are not lovely, and neither are the men. its a student population heavily dominated by kingston uni students as they have 3 (if i remember correctly) main campuses dotted around town. the clubs are horrific and i'd rather get shot than to ever wander into them again. all that is ever played is commercial crap. living expenses....well its like any other place really. not cheap, not expensive. prolly not too difficult to find housemates as loads of students move out from halls after first year. shopping-wise its quite convenient. everything you'll ever need is pretty much in the town centre or thereabouts (you just have to get to know your way around)...

anyway, i went to kingston uni and i didn't really like it. but you can ignore my opinion because it was the first 3 years i lived in this country...and lets just say....kingston does not float my boat.

I've lived in Kingston my whole life! Except now 'cos I'm away at uni!

My mum taught at the uni for 14 years and didn't like it very much! It does depend on the subject you want to study though!!

Clubbing-wise there's 'The Works' or as we call it 'Spot-the-whiteman-club', there's McClusky's, cheap small and cheesey, and there's there's OCEANA www.oceana.at which is quite new and has lots of rooms, including a ballroom which is pretty big but the music can be lousy!

WAnt any more info?!

My girlfriend goes to McClusky's quite a lot. Really cheesy sounding but is a good laugh with the right people i guess

I thought Oceana club was pretty good, one of those places that you just get lost in.

'tis certainly that.

Try to avoid Student night (Wednesday) if you can

4.10 for a Smirnoff Ice!!

To be honest I don't really care about the clubbing scene within Kingston itself. London is close enough that I wouldn't have to worry about that.

Kingston seemed very expensive to me. A mate of mine went to Uni there and had to pay a shite load for accommodation. Put him off his course and he left. You looked at other unis? Its a really really nice place to go out though . Just by the Thames. Really cool

Actually most of the British universities that my university has agreements with are in shit locations (well, shit in regards to clubbing and travelling over to other parts of Europe) -- places like Sunderland & Plymouth. The only other places besides Kingston that have decent location and engineering and/or computer science classes are Bath (already been there) and Huddersfield. What's Huddersfield like?

Posted by mef on Apr-02-2005 07:35:

Not as nice a place as Kingston I would imagine I could be wrong...

Posted by dj_mdma on Apr-02-2005 20:10:

ok, looks like some people know the score on kingston then!

The Works...is shite. It deserves its "spot the white person tag " lol. Music wise, it won't be to your taste. Clubwise, its massive and has a great decor. But yeah, its expensive in general.

Oceana is huuuuuuge, fucking massive, and is a very "pretty" clu. Student night IS CHEAP, its not 4.10 a smirnoff ice lol. Thats on a normal night it's 2 quid on a student night, with 2.50 for double mixers, and i think 2 quid for single mixers. Again musicwise, is mainly shite. Student nights are mondays and wednesdays. They play house in the main room but as it gets later sometimes they have a "dance classics" hour and they'll play old school stuff like insomnia, zombie nation (lol) and stuff like that. And then they will play the commercial RnB shite. There is also a cheese room, but i tend to avoid that like the plague.

Mclusky's....THE LESS SAID ABOUT THAT THE BETTER! I FUCKING HATE THAT PLACE soooooo much!!! its like the biggest cheesefest ever. die. just die.

contrary to what fiona says, the ladies are very fine. There is no shortage of talent there

Kingston is in a great location. It by the river. Rivers have excellent bars, kingston is no different. The transport links into london are great. You've got a 35 min train to waterloo. There is also a night bus that goes from London to Kingston. Its the N22. It departs from Picadilley circus, and goes through most of south west london and terminates in kingston. You're also very close to Heathrow airport. Kingston is also close to Twickenham and Richmond, both of which boast great bars... i can vouch for that

Also you've got me and rick (moondog) who live around there, and we like to party, so you won't go wrong there (Y)
