how do u play?with energy or calm and motionless?
how do you play and how do you prefer to watch other dj's play?
pumping hands in the air energy like-carl cox, eddie haliwell
or calm and motionless like digweed or paul van dyk???
I don't go to clubs to look at the DJ.
When a DJ is calm I think the set is better. More concentration.
Though, I don't have a problem with djs that jump around or throw their hand into the air.
I think it depends on the style you play, and what type of crowd you are playing for.
Some people like to just dance and enjoy the music, while others like to jump around and scream like crazy monkeys. Sort of like this:
.
I can't imagine a prog-house dj jumping around like crazy, i think a more laid-back and calm dj would be better. But when playing a bangin' techno set, standing around like you're dead won't really add to the music and atmosphere.
When I play, I need to be active in some way. Not
jumping up and down like a mad man, yet, not standing
there like a zombie.
imo it's highly dependable on certain key factors. for one, the vibes n energy u get from the crowd. I think its a two-way thing.
I start groovin' naturally when the crowd 'lifts' me. my music 'lifts' the crowd, and the crowd in turn 'lifts' me.
the music is an important factor here as a crowd ain't gonna go mental looking at a dj jumping like a chimpanzee when the music the chimp is playing sucks balls.
neway to answer your simple question and not stray from the topic, i do a little of both. neither to extreme.

I bounce around a lot, jump, shimmy around, really get into it.
And thats just in my bedroom
From a clubbers point of view, I like to see the DJ getting into it, even if its just bouncing around a bit and smiling at the crowd
I prefer DJs that go with you bounch around and so on, it makes a connection.
When I play on decks I can be quite calm but when it starts going good, ace tunes, ace mixing, everything going right then I can help but start bobbing like compton crack whore.
I play with a lot of energy. After all, if the DJ isn't getting into it, why should the crowd?
There are too many DJs out there who just keep their head down, doing that thing they practised in their bedroom, never acknowledging the crowd. Ultimately the DJ is an entertainer and while the music should always do the talking, it never hurts to show a bit of enthusiasm.

I just can't help it man, I'm not trying to put on a dance show, I just fucking love spinning records...
I can't help but shake my ass around when I'm mixing.
I Like it a lot more when the dj gets into it and really helps the crowd get going.
It's a very emotional thing for me.
People are different and what people expect from a DJ is so different. I think the majority of people like seeing a guy who is good at what he does and also enjoying it.
In all my years as a DJ I know for a fact that the majority of clubbers like to see a DJ connect with the music. If the DJ let's go then so do a lot of the clubbers.
Personally I find the likes of Digweed and PvD really dull. Hence the reason why I never want to see either of them again.
I don't like the kind of DJ who is too up there to shake the hands of clubbers either. This just hacks me off totally, I agree that it can get to be hard work sometimes of someone is there in the middle of a mix but I usually give them the just a moment sign and then oblidge with a smile and a hand shake just to let them know that I appreciate the time this clubber took out to come and let me know that he likes what I am doing.
Whilst I don't get this in the same amount as big names I thrive in interaction with the crowd and am definately a people guy behind the decks. I am there for them, they are not there for me. They are paying to see/hear me perform not the other way around.
This is not ment as a bragging statment but more as an example:
At one of the places I play every month I have a very large group of University girls who come to see me spin regardless of the headliner and the promoter of that night has told me in no uncertain terms that the reason why his night works the best on that night is because of that group who bring masses of people with them to see when I play. They like the music (first and foremost) but also me and my personality. Other nights at this place have been axed but the promoter actually knows what a popular face is worth.
I get the closing sets and this ensures that there is a decent crowd till close. This is all due to connecting with people and showing my personality a little.
I'm not saying you have to be an epeleptic on speed but just let it go and enjoy a little. A lot of it has to do with confidence.
It's not so much about how much you dance or don't dance but just look as if you are meant to be there and be happy.
Cheers
Nem
Try and stop me dancing when im mixing!
I do it enough at home, let alone when working -if im into the music, or if the crowd is giving a good response then im dancing around.
If you stand around looking bored, then how the hell do you expect to get people dancing to it.
And never ever fold your arms in the dj console....gives off such negative energy.
i get into it, like majorly!
I dont get into it much at all.
i've found my mixin to be better when i get into the music. if the crowd is lovin then i'll show em im loving it too. and when some1 in the crowd wants to shake your hand or theres a girl lookin all starry eyed at ya it certainly helps. not sayin thats what DJin is abt but damn it certainly gives u a lift!
ps nem - these uni chicks.. ya doggin any of em?
It personally shits me to not see the DJ interact with the crowd or be entirely motionless even if its a chilled prog set its still good to see them bopping away. I have never seen PVD nor am i a big fan of his style but from what i hear on and about these forums he seems like the most boring dj ever to watch reguarless of the fact his mixes are unbfuckinleavable i still like someone who puts on a show, will raise there arms up in the air, and make some form of interaction with the crowd.
I mean if your not up there enjoying it then why are you up there? Thats just how it comes across watching a stornch prick on stage.
Personally i cant help but bop away when I am having a spin, it also helps me keep in time
I get into the music and move around, but I'm not liek full fledged dancing in the booth. Although wthout fail, the worst trainwrecks I have heard out have been by DJs who went crazy dancing in the booth...i.e. Cox, Donald Glaude...but their energy really is addicting if you're in the crowd while they're spinning.
Tons of energy...right up until the first record skips.

jaaaaast faaacking give er
you should see me in my bedroom
but i didnt have so much experience before to 'let go' on event. i have gone nuts once
and it was my best set up to date - hands down. now having some more gigs lined up and having some experience i really can say that i enjoy it more when 'going with the vibe' - but this also requires that people are going nuts also
