what constitutes a "residency" ??

This is just for fun...heck this is what eats away my time when I shld be making demos or sum shit.

But anyways, does:

1) playing regular Fridays and/or Saturdays at a location..

2) getting paid only when you ask for your 'allowance'..

3) not getting paid coz of corny excuses such as 'your music was too hard' (when the dancefloor is mega drug induced and jumping like kangaroos, and not to mention the bar sales are up)..

4) the manager of the place giving you a 20% discount on drinks on some nights when you're not getting paid, and expects you to go WOW THANKS...

constitute a residency at a given location??

I'm sure alot of djs have been faced with these situations.. so I think it'd be nice to share views so others will be aware of the ugly side of the industry out there (in which case the topic wld need to be modified accordingly but yeah we'll see where this thread goes).

note: with regards to point 4), its not ungratefulness but more so like " dude i've been keeping your taps flowing all night can't u even spare me a lousy beer? "

Well think about this though that your getting paid to do something you love. Yes its hard work but its still a lot of fun. But yes doing weekly gigs at a club/bar for money i would consider being a resident.

a regular time slot that you get paid for... sometimes you gota stay around a little later then you may want to get your $$$... that is unless you have a contract that states you get paid before etc. I had one that was every other saturday from 9-2 and i could have anyone open for me... so that was kinda cool... but hard to find someone that was good as a warm-up... not someone who would try to bang out every freekin track from 9-10 or 11. WTF i swear some dj's have no idea what the hell a opener is... anyway... i always got free drinks all night so 4-7 readbulll and vodka's was worth some $$$ to but spend every freekin dime on new records so it was more to build my records up and have a good time... its also cool when they have the computer for the lights like 5 feet from the decks so you can fuk with it! had my residency for about a year... untill the buildings roof had probems and he didnt have the investors backing him to keep it open... and it didnt help that the promoters for Octoberfest for a college sold wrist bands to 67 underage kids... bussed them in when the cops were right out side so they sent in undercover and here they had beers allover the counter to just "take" ummmmm yea you cant do that... gota actualy serve people. so the owner had a lota fines and was kinda forced to close the place for a few weeks... and now it has been closed for about a year... so im shit outa luck!

A residency has nothing to do with getting paid. It's just about having a regular slot. I even have some things that are refered to as Bi-monthly residencies. It just refers to a spot that you have with some regularity. Money doesn't come into it.

The other scenario presented sounds more like 'Shifty promoters' more than anything else.

Had all the above scenarios.
The one that bugs me the most is when bar managers start getting involved with the music. That's usually what you have the DJ or promoter for. I have heard so many 'old' men who manage pre-club bars think they know what people want to hear. Don't get me wrong... some are really good at knowing but most haven't got a clue.
If a promoter tells you it's too hard you have to respect it, as you probably are not fitting in with what he/she wants. And they have a rough idea of what they want their night to be about.

Big misconception though as that if people are dancing and happy, this should make the bar person happy. On the contrary, this is bad for the bar as when people are dancing they are not drinking.

I actually think that if you have a pre club bar going off with people dancing it's very good publicity all round even if the financial gains don't match. Good for your rep and the bars.

yea ill agree with you nem... the issue I had was there was NO promoter! just the owner and he didnt get it! he would not spend any $$$ on promotions very seldom flyers etc. it sucked so i just went in and did my thing. but i would hope that if you have a reg stop then you would get paid something!

When do contracts get involved with residencies? I'm sure that a smaller place would be more informal but at the bigger clubs, are their residents under contract?

what about some of the big name DJs that play regularly in ibiza during the summer....hows that work? i am curious

After giving it some thought that is extremely true, a happy dancing dancefloor is especially good for the DJ, not the bar people.

But all that dopamine flow must trigger off some drinking spree for at least 25% of the clubbers!


Btw, you mention "pre-club". Is that the term for pubs/small 'clubs' which have djs and a little dancefloor? I don't know what to call these places so I call em bistros/pubs which gives an impression quite farfetched from what it really is.

ive never played out, but i will someday....
