Dance Music: Sexist?

Studying for my Linguistics exam- Language and Gender, I came across an interesting article...
quote:

Dance music labelled "sexist"
STOCKWELL, LONDON:

Feminist Groups made a call to Government and the Recording Industry this morning asking for a total ban on all house music.

Linda Smith from the Stockwell Refuse and Resist Women's Empowerment league claimed house and dance music was derogatory, sexist in nature and offensive to Women.

"Dance music today is nothing more than a cheap compilation of gross misogyny, antigay vitriol, and continuous violence against women," she said. "And we cannot allow this kind of hatespeech to continue unabated."

Speaking at this mornings League of Women "Stop! The Sexploitation" Solidarity forum, Smith made a defiant call to end the sexist samples and disrespectful titles she claimed were prevalent throughout the dance music scene.

"The dance hit '9pm till I come'-is that not simply a double-entendre reference to the sexual needs of men, and clearly serving as little less than a cheap innuendo for the male orgasm?" she asked. "Or Signum's 'What you got for me" whose very title reinforces the view of women as subservient?"

Continued Smith: "When you listen to songs such as Da Hool's 'Met her at the love parade' instrumental, they are simply reinforcing the dominant and ultraconservative values of the establishment when the synthesizer hums about hating women."

Smith went on to make an impassioned plea to the taskforce members and women everywhere to boycott all forms of house and dance music, a genre she claimed only served to objectify women as sexual victims.

The group is not alone in their views. In a recent interview in "Femina" magazine, the long-standing hard-core feminist and Lesbian Rights campaigner Debra Collins suggested the very core of dance music was anti-women, anti-gender, anti-empowerment, and anti-gay.

"The beats and samples that constitute the heart of dance music are inherently misogynistic," she claimed. "As a musical genre 'Banging House' does nothing less than promote violence against women in the home. On a wider scope it all points to women as domestic subserviants- the term House itself is nothing more than a nasty masquerade for Kitchen as far as I'm concerned, and do you really think the "Hoover" samples used universally in hard house are a co-incidence? And even the basic recorded format is typical of the male obsessed domain- the music is all recorded onto '12 inch' vinyl. Surprise surprise."

"One thing is for certain however," she concluded. "When those sexist hatemongers Push released 'Universal Nation' they weren't referring to the kind of Universal Nation that included a gendered or lesbian perspective, that's for sure."

From what i learned, Smith's argument is somewhat correct, dance music can be quite sexist, but that doesn't mean it has to be banned... However I disagree that in any way it promotes violence against women... I need to hear what Prof. King has to say about this... lol
Let's see what everyone else thinks!

Maybe it's because I've been around the stuff for so long, but I don't find it misogynistic @ all.

I really don't think a few sexually inclined (even deviant) lyrics can make an entire genre of music sexist.

If that is the case then before even considering dance music they should maybe take a look at today's Hip Hop

edit: actually hip hop is more objectifying than anything, but I still think it beats dance music hollow in the sexist category.

house music anti-gay?

edit: you do realize that that article is a satirical piece right?

And dance music is also in fact... anti-dance.

there's no need for that kinda comment! Every one is entitled to have an opinion, dood! If someone fully agrees with this that's their right... no need to say they should be shot in the head!

I agree that the her arguments in the article are extreme, but hey some people think like that, and there's nothing you and I can do about it!

Posted by loca on Apr-07-2005 06:51:

Bah. I really, really don't agree with that view at all. Please! If any type of music is derogatory towards women in general, condoning violence and sexism, i would think it was most forms of that top 40 rap shit coming out all the time (can you say 50 cent?!)!

I honestly hope that article is a pisstake because if not then +1 to what trancechaos said lol

This article is not a piss-take at all in my opinion. Click here. I understand how some people could construe it that way, simply because her thesis is absolute crap and unbelievable to a certain extent, but believe me, it's not a satirical piece. However, this pales in comparison with the crap that some feminists are capable of spewing. Take a look at what Luce Irigaray, a world-reknown thinker, philosopher, "scientist", and hard-core feminist, has to say about Einstein's famous theory of relativity equation (THIS IS NOT A JOKE. It was published in a peer-reviewed journal, as an article entitled: Is the subject of science sexed?)

quote:
Is E=Mc2 a sexed equation? Perhaps it is. Let us make the hypothesis that it is insofar as it privileges the speed of light over other speeds that are vitally necessary to us. What seems to me to indicate the possibly sexed nature of the equation is not directly its uses by nuclear weapons, rather it is having privileged what goes the fastest ...

Click here for more information and absolutely asinine commentary by one of the world's most reknown feminists.

Disclaimer: I am not trashing the feminist movement at all. I believe that women should absolutely and positively stand up for their rights, like all under-privileged groups. However, I am simply highlighting some of the bullshit pushed forward by certain elements of the feminist movement that gets passed for truth in academic circles, amongst other places. Those in physics or those familiar with the Socal and Brickmont hoax will know what I'm referring to. Sorry for the off-topic commentary.

People are sexist. How the hell's a beat supposed to be degrade women ? Lyrics i can understand - but a frickin beat ?! I think some people have way too much time on their hand and just want to find something to whinge about.

quote:

"The beats and samples that constitute the heart of dance music are inherently misogynistic," she claimed. "As a musical genre 'Banging House' does nothing less than promote violence against women in the home.

So after I come from a 'bangin house' party, i'm so amped up i need to bash my girls head from side to side ? Who comes up with this stuff ?

Posted by kabelicious on Apr-07-2005 10:38:

"Dance music" is such a broad generalization.

But, yeah, there are some songs that I can see women getting upset over - there are a few booty tracks I can think - where the lyrics are offensive to some. And many rap tracks talk about violence to women and/or make them seem like nothing more than penis hats for men.

But it's MUSIC! Freedom of speech and all that.....it's like arguing that Marilyn Manson really made those kids shoot up their high schools because they listened to his music.

House music anti-gay?

ITS FUCKING GAY PEOPLE THAT STARTED THIS MUSIC FOR GOD SAKE!!!

Meet her at the love parade is sexist??? Does she even know what the Love Parade is? The ONLY house song ive ever heard that is sexist and promotes violence is "beat that bitch with a bat". Even the examples shadow wolf provided were booty bass dance music and not house music.

I hate most feminists. Most feminists DO NOT want equality. Most feminists want pysogony. Do not confuse feminism with egalatrianism, they are NOT the same thing. And people like this are the same types that see the virgin mary in a soup bowl. In other words complete fruitcakes. The worst part is that some people actually buy into what they are saying and/or waste press space on them!

Booty music is not house music... its rap on crack.

I thought it was more a commentary on dance music in general rather than just house music.

But booty is defintely more electronically bound than it is rap bound.
