Techniques of Djing

Ok, ok.. I'm a newbie, yes, and I'm almost certain that someone here at one time or another has started a topic such as this. If that is the case, someone just simply tell me where I can find out more about being a dj. And when I say 'more about a dj' I mean absolutely everything!

I don't know much or in most cases anything about djing and that is why I am starting this. If someone is very knowledgable in where to begin getting into djing I would really appreciate it. Either reply here or pm me, please.

I want to know everything about djing.

Well, if you live in the springs, you should come up to Denver and check out some parties. Mingle a bit and ask djs some questions. There's a good one this Saturday. It features Jason Blum (Deepsky), Dave Aude, and Jon Bishop. I'll be playing from 4am-5am. I'd be happy to give you a couple of ideas.

Easy. I got lucky with Ultra, but I need to figure out a way to get back, bigger and better. I might get a three hour set in the DR though. That would be sick!

I appreciate it. I just try to always be humble. Anyone can dj. It's the production that I need to jump into now.

Bas - A friend of mine, that I have known for a long time and I play with, won a contest to play at Ultra. He had to be baptized, forcing him to leave early. He offered me his slot, since he had to go. Best part was that I got to play longer than expected. At first, it sucked. I got on from 11:30-12:00 and the gates weren't even opened yet. Then Kenneth Thomas played until about 1:40, because none of the djs showed. After that, the guy running the stage asked me if I wanted to go back on, and I got to play another hour.

What really sucked is that they had the decks on those air pocket, pieces of shit, and the needles were some crap Stanton's. I had to play mainly cds, and really could only use one table. Even the better of the two jumped on me mid mix. They also didn't have a booth volume, so I was getting blasted in my right ear with way too much sound. I still had fun though, and passed a shit ton of cds out.

It's hard everywhere. I know a lot of people in Denver, which has benefited me, but I really wanna break out of here and play gigs, that I'm booked for by someone I don't know, outside of Colorado. I got Ultra, and I'm playing the Dominican on the 16th, but they are through people I know.

but denver has some clubs and stuff right? orange county is freakin lame...everyone has to trek out to Los Angeles. enter bas & woody orange county's heroes of house! and kudos on the ultra thing thats fucking cool

Yeah. We have a great scene, but it's also really competitive and full of djs. The Church (One of the top clubs in the US) helps, for sure, and we have some other good clubs, as well as promoters that throw one-offs.

In a way, you could really blow up, if you found a decent venue, in Orange County, and built up a night from the ground up. There have to be EDM fans out there and, if there aren't any clubs, you could find a niche. I've had to throw a lot of my own parties to be recognized by the major promoters in town. One of the biggest promoters here, is one of my best friends that I've known for over 10 years, but he never booked me at first. It took time for me to develop and, after throwing successful events and getting booked by some other big promoters in town, he has started to book me for all of his major events. It's pretty sweet, but, as I said before, I see a bigger picture that I want to get myself into. We shall see.

Thanks for the invite.. I had the opportunity already of seeing Deepsky play last June at Red Rocks. My brother and I are going to be up in Denver the 21 April to Ferry Corsten at the Church. I'm so excited to see him live. I have only seen Paul Van Dyk and a few others.

Anyways, you can get back to me if you like and let me know about some other events going on up there. Like I said I want to know absolutely everything about being a dj.

Thanks..

Will do. I'll keep you posted. You missed a hell of a party this past Saturday.
